Fully being aware this is a schizo thread and not really worthy of an honest reply, my best guess is that Ewing/Editorial/Marvel thought it'd be another good way to stretch out the forced gap between Peter and MJ, but saw the immediate backlash to that, realized it'd be Paul 2.0, and finally wrote something in to put it to bed.

In the same vein, maybe Ewing/Editorial/etc. were still buying into the idea that they needed more drama or a hook to get readers angry and talking in the empty space between Paul getting dumped and Death Spiral. Honestly, if the past few issues had filled the Flash space with MJ helps Paul find an apartment or something, we'd have very little to have talked about with the book.
