4chan is dying in general. The internet is dying in general.
>>
>>152669605
That's what happens on a website where everyone is a hateful asshole who doesn't like anything. Maybe try actually having a genuine discussion about something you enjoy, and the board won't be so fucking dead. But oh wait, you literally can't because enjoying media is cringe and woke. Fuck you and shut the fuck up. Boring asshole.

Congrats, this is what the hobby board for a dying industry looks like.

4chan is dying because it doesn't foster community and gatekeep undesirables. The site is run by people who are proven from the hack to relish the idea of tormenting random anons and shitting up the site. The same people who thought /qa/ and wojak spam was funny until they went after a faggot board, then deleted it and got hacked by those same schizoids.

4chan is decaying in general.
It's honestly better to look for niche forums at this point for discussion online. Even though most of those sites mods are power hungry.
The internet just sucks too much now.

There are so many compounding factors as to why this board it's dead, it's very depressing to think about. But I don't want /co/ to go away. I like 4chan and /co/. I remember back in the character tournaments (Ms./co/, Mr./co/, etc) there was much less voting than in the previous years. Good. Mobile posting sucks. If you go onto basically any altchan the quality of discussion almost immediately becomes a thousand times better because most people on those websites are posting on their computers, not their cell phones.
>>
The ban on posts from (most) cell carriers really was a double edged sword because it stemmed a lot of the low-effort shitposting, but the surviving shitposters are much more high-effort schizos who are better at driving people away.

>Is a reduction in shitposting really worth losing so much activity though
Yes. Quality > Quantity any day of the week. You should be able to see this firsthand with the torrent of AI slop washing over the internet.

>Is 4chan really fun anymore when you take the chaos out of it?
You're falling into the same false dichotomy fallacy that people have been doing for years. Shitposting =/= board culture. Board culture requires high quality posters to survive. Shitposting erodes board culture and undermines post quality. 4chan does not need to be an ocean of piss to be able to have genuine, fun discussion away from censorship, cliques, and SocJus retards.
>>
>>152670302
It was a mixture of the captcha changes and the needing a google account to vote these last two years. Besides that yes I do agree. I like this place, as shit as it can be sometimes. You just need to find a good thread every now and then.
>>
>>152670554
I guess. I can't really argue with you there, part of me just feels like there were good posters lost too, surely most phoneposters couldn't have been that way, right?
>>152670559
Agreed. I don't think it's all lost yet.
>>
>>152669708
>The internet just sucks too much now.

Yeah the net is so sterile now. It's hard to find sites that foster good discussions. Everything is botted and astroturfed to hell, sites like Reddit have restrictive rules and powertripping jannies with an agenda, social media isn't meant to foster discussions and the users are mostly braindead anyway, basically indistinguishable from the many bots that infest those sites. 4chan is unironically one of the best places to engage in a free exchange of ideas with both likeminded and differing viewpoints, which is pretty sad.
>>
>>152670302
What's wrong with captcha?
>>
I used to be a lot more active on /co/ around two years ago, only just recently started poking my head around again and thought I was going crazy because everything felt so inactive. Went to a thread and the first reply was loli art that the jannies never removed, even hours after the thread was posted. Saw a lot more low quality OPs than I remember there being. Felt disheartening since I despise social media and don't want to go there to discuss cartoons, especially since every site is filled with kids who are very loud and annoying.

Even then I've still come across a few threads that were a lot of fun, for things I wouldn't have expected. Whatever Happened to Robot Jones of all shows has had a handful of threads that have hit bump limit, with a healthy mix of shitposting, discussion, and even OC from drawfags. /co/ may be dying, but it's not dead yet, and I will always feel at home no matter how bad things get.
>>
>>152669605
It's mostly bots now even on /co/. Some bought a pass or scammed one via a stolen credit card or discordjanny's giving them out to stifle threads.
>>
>>152670302
>Depending on your provider it almost entirely blocked mobile posting, and let's be real not everyone wants to sit at the desktop to post.
Not my problem, death to mobileposters.
>>
>>152670319
Absolute?
All-ages stuff tends to get solid threads as well though not guaranteed
>>
>>152669635
Hmmm, I dunno about that, I still enjoy plenty of stuff; lots of current video games, anime, manga, novels, the only current stuff I generally don't enjoy are music (current music is literally 99.99% shit, it's so bad that AIslop is topping the streaming charts) and cartoons (except some stuff like Primal, Smiling Friends, and CSE, but those are basically ending or dead).
The issue is that I just don't have much reason to post here nowadays because there aren't many cartoons or comics I'm interested in nowadays, I'm only here now because of the recent Smiling Friends announcement.
Comics and cartoons just aren't really *for* me anymore, so I see no reason to engage with them.

It's not just /co/, it's every board. I browsed /tv/ the other weekend and it shocked me to see how slow it was. Almost as slow as /co/. Everything with the exception of a couple of boards (like /v/) feels like it's on Euro timezone hours now, except for the Euro hours, which are straight-up dead. One sobering effect of this which has become apparent over the last few years (I'm sure people here will agree) is how you'll find yourself in a discussion about something and realize that the anons you're talking to seem to be the same ones you had been talking to days or weeks or months before. It's usually not bad enough that it's worth interrupting the thread to make a comment about it, because if you're wrong you look like a schizo, but if you're right... why spoil the illusion of a fresh conversation? Sometimes it can even be oddly comforting. Nice to see your weird internet pen-pals are still alive and kicking, you know. Still it gives me pause when I encounter it, and it makes me wonder how often others have come to that same realization while talking to me. This entire site feels more and more like a virtual retirement home for jaded millennials who don't fit in anywhere else or who simply hate social media and prefer anonymity. That's not such a bad thing, but it sure does feel more lonely than it used to and there's no reason to assume that it won't get lonelier from here.

It's odd to see graphs like this and think that there's 1/4 as much activity on here each day as there used to be, because maybe it's just rose-tinted goggles but it generally feels like there's even less than that.
>>
>>152670856
/tv/ and /co/ are generally dead, for much the same reason.
Current TV and current cartoons are both kind of shitty, and the amount being made is downright anemic compared to even just a decade ago, so you end up with the most active discussions on these boards being culture war shit surrounding the industries and the occasional perma-generals for the few things people still care about (ASoIaF and related properties on /tv/, TADC/Hazbin and Death Battle on /co/).

But you are right about there being a lot of discussion with the same anons, and this is largely because the "old internet" no longer gets young blood, all the young people are content with AI and whatever the algorithm on TikTok feeds them, this just ends up more pronounced with /co/ since cartoons in general attract a lot of autistic teenagers, and that cohort used to make up a significant proportion of /co/ posters.
>>
>>152669605
To be honest I go to boards where my interests align at the time. If I'm obsessing over an anime or manga, I hang around on /a/ more. If it's a cartoon or comic series, I'm here on /co/. If it's a video game then /v/ (or other more specialized boards), /m/ if it's a mecha series, and so on.

Aside from Hazbin, there really hasn't been much /co/ material that interests me for a while.
>>
>>152670656
Anything not sterile is sunk in a culture of being maximally hostile to anyone who tries to do or talk about anything because that's seen as the only way to prevent being sterilized. There's only extruded industrial paste or crab bucket/tall poppy culture.

It's nice to have the occasional thread to air out the many grievances that come with this site's decline. I sometimes wish there was a place to discuss these things in depth without a mod Sword of Damocles hanging overhead to smite the thread right in the middle of the discussion, even if there is a reason that spaces for meta discussion are taken out back after what happened with /qa/. Things don't need to be so intentionally obfuscated though. Taking away the IP counter is one example- we all know the site's metrics are lower, why try to hide it? We can all tell! It's like a balding guy getting Turkish hair plugs.

On /co/ it's especially bad because a lot of the same anons post the exact same ritual threads week after week. Those Tushy Tuesday threads for instance are maybe 5 guys at best dumping the same images time after time. I've also noticed an explosion of weird ERP posting that I hope is just bots because it doesn't have a human speech cadence.

It's not at first, but then it soon becomes a general, and then you get all the usual suspects that can be expected to spoil both meta threads and general threads. It's probably for the best to have it be an informal thing that crops up out of the blue.

Captchas are never going to go away because they're the only bulwark against rampant bot spam from mega-autists.
Even now, the only reason 4chan's captcha is the way it is is because it was specifically implemented to stop the autistic furry from /v/ who set up an entire proxy site and was using it to spam CP on residential IPs all over the site for at least the last 2-3 years.
You are never going back to a captcha-less internet unless you want to create an account tied to your real identity, that's just the simple fact of life, and it's largely because some autists just can't control their autism.
>>
>>152669902
This. There are plenty of reasons why this site has a god-awful community, but the majority of it comes down to the site being openly hostile to even posting at all. All this effort just to post a reaction image shitpost? Yeah, I don't think so. It's fair to say that the site's decaying setup is the reason that 4chan has so actively lost users.

Here's a confession. This site's so dead that sometimes I post intentionally bullshit obvious retard-tier information and then even respond to myself calling myself a retard just to get other anons to jump in and start some kind of conversation about an actually interesting topic.
>>
>>152671029
Reminder that /qa/ was intentionally gutted to encourage shitposting so that it drowned out all meta discussion and user participation in the site activities.
Of course that shitposting was what brought in the soijakkers. And instead of stamping them out we got them watering until they made Sharty, which led to the hack since Rapeape & co would not update exploits which then dropped posts here by 25%.
A huge reason for 4chan decline is moderators did not want to hear criticism or put in effort, so now the remaining jannies have to put in more effort lol
>>
>>152671105

>>
>>152669682
I'm still convinced that mods intentionally let /qa/ turn to total shit so they could have an excuse to close down the one board where anons could criticize them within the rules, and didn't think about the consequences of supporting the growth of a schizo culture.

Ruegger cartoon fans are OG internet psychopaths. That guy spamming his wall of text at you could potentially be a veteran of early 1990s webrings who's in his 60s or even 70s by now. You should be honored.

I hate when threads turn into the same thing over and over. It's not /co/, but one example is Hellsing on /a/. Everyone has had the same opinions on it for 20 years and they're not liable to change so discussion is genuinely impossible.
>>
>>152670995
nah lol anons read them, they get discussed & then fall off

For some reason it wouldn't work on mobile a lot of times, it would just reset the timer when you got down from 300. This newer one doesn't do that, it was the one where you had to slide the letters around. Mobile seems to work fine again but idk how much a difference it makes now.
>>152671131
I remember supposedly one time an anon went out of his way to get rid of a persistent schizo on /trash/ by trying to talk to the mods about it. They took reporting for spam specifically off and said in IRC chat that you can't do that anymore after.

It makes me really sad to think how many people I've talked to that I would see semi frequently that are gone now. I wonder if they'll ever come back.

>The internet is dying in general.
Between increasing draconian age restriction (read: surveillance and censorship) laws all over, and AI driving up the cost of computer parts, storage space, domain hosting, and energy, it's hard to imagine the internet as we know it surviving into the 2030s. The "world wide web" is being phased out for a global panopticon- which it has been for many years, except they're soon not even going to bother hiding it, or affording you the luxury of entertainment and free speech for much longer. It's all grim but it makes me thankful to have been able to talk to all of you during this strange period in history.

/a/ is genuinely fucking awful. It's probably the only board with actual engagement left, but it hardly matters when 90 percent of it is absolute trash. >>
The only other thing that excited me more about here were the drawthreads, too bad spamming mongoloids had to ruin them.
>>
>>152671473
Saying this on /co/ of all boards shows an immense lack of self-awareness and is part of why this board is dead nowadays.
>>
>>152671496
I was on somewhere that was made just for 4chan loudfags (like me). It was extremely fortuitous timing that we had that during that period, it wasn't created with that in mind.
>>
>>152671496
I was on some other altchan boards a little but really just filled the time with more games and stuff

>>152671618
I never cared about drawthreads for the longest time but it has occured to me that stuff like drawthreads and general drawn interactive oc are something very unique to the imageboard format, something I don't think any other site really does, at least with the kinda forum aspect that 4chan has.
No other site really quite replicates not just the function, but also the community interaction in quite the same collaborative way
>>
>>152669605
If you want to see a board that's a shell of itself look at /pw/. The AEW vs. WWE autism (which is basically just a proxy war for a few fucking subreddits) and joshifags have basically run everyone else off.

The drawthreads have actually been shut down on some boards because of how bad some of the spammers are. It's a real travesty since they're some of the few places that still produce OC on this site that used to do things other than regurgitate twitter memes.
>>
>>152671097
Man I hate that fuckin proxy site. I run a general on another board and shitposters use that site to make it a nightmare to upkeep, and the mods don't care. It sucks.
>>
>>152671691
The drawthreads get attacked like that because they're one of the most visible sources of OC and so they're an easy target for "burn it all down" types.
>>
>Mods used to so carefully monitor boards that not properly spoilering something was basically a guaranteed ban
>Now they let extremely well-known shitposters and schizos just run amok of the site with no regard for them driving users away or completely destroying conversation about certain topics
The fuck happened
>>
>>152670302
Cooldown timer needs to go back to being 30 seconds for OPs so storytiming is less of a time sink. Storytimes were one of the lifebloods of /co/ but the 60 second timer makes them a giant hassle because you basically have to dedicate an hour and a half or two hours of your day to them where previously the same amount could be done in half the time.

>>152670690

I think the main issue is that there are just no new successful cartoons in the 2020s. Where is the 2020s Gravity Falls? Adventure Time? Regular Show? Gumball? Steven Universe? MLP? ATLA (or even Korra)? Bojack? Rick and Morty? The comics are actually doing okayish but /co/ has never been driven by comics discussion.

Indie shows that only release an episode every 6 months can't carry this board. Smiling Friends was the closest and it already fucking died.
>>
>>152671817

Owl House and Amphibia aired in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Problem is they're done and over with.

I genuinely believe the mods allowing AI slop to run rampant is a major factor in the site's decline, that shit is a massive repellent for most people. The only board where AI slop is banned is /a/, and to no one's surprise it's the most active board by far.

/a/ is like 6th or so in terms of activity.
The most active boards are /vg/, /pol/, and /v/.
Though /v/ did recently ban the shitty AIslop general that was clogging up the catalog there, not sure why the same hasn't happened on /co/.
But yea, AI spam is fucking cancer, I have no idea why all these smaller websites and image-hosting platforms aren't banning that shit immediately, it is literally just worthless spam that no one actually looks at or engages with outside of the NPCs on TikTok, facebook, and twatter.

>>
Back in my day this board would've rightfully crucified anyone admitting to phoneposting
>>
>>152669605
The site has lost visitors yearly since 2022.
The hack made it loose even more.
Terrible captchas designed to force you to pay for a pass make people post less. I second guess starting threads now, the star ones are hell.
Would be bliss if India and other places were rangebanned but they will never do it.
Questionable moderation on this board and a few other places also sours the spirit of posting here. Bascially no fun allowed.
Removal of feature after feature. Bans page and contact page are a joke now.
4chan will likely die in a few years from a combo of soaring hardware costs due to AI and other countries making it impossible to visit due to online age verification laws.
And lets me honest post 2016 its so full of misery and hellish autism it is no longer the geeky hideaway it was in the 2000s. Everyone screaming at each other, /pol/ crap seeping everywhere else. /co/ is love? Hasn't been for a long time.
Enjoy it while you can, and by enjoy I mean put up with it as best you can. It won't be here forever.

>>
>>152672097
>Getting a different IP is not hard at all on pc if you know what you are doing
No, it's definitely a lot harder, nowadays residential IPs are almost always static in western countries from all the big regional ISPs, so you can't just reset your modem like you could back in the 2000s and 2010s. If you're using satellite or one of those mobile network hotspots though it's exactly the same as on a phone, and a quick restart WILL net you a new IP.

But I actually like sexy brown girls.
>>
>>152672046
Even on pc you still need extension to save images from other sites because everything is webp or avif now. It's really inconvenient. Just as is 4chan with it's fucking stupid image resizing when browsing on phone.
>>
>>152671877
>I have no idea why all these smaller websites and image-hosting platforms aren't banning that shit immediately
Nearly all of them had monied intetests in pushing it. Deviantart is owned by an Israeli company with AI stocks, Twitter is owned by a flat out pedophile pushing his Ai as a literal CP machine, and 4chan is one of the most astroturfed sites on the net. Mods and admins were almost certainly paid by AI companies to turn a blind eye to all the spam.

Though the fact that /v/ of all boards banned their general is news to me; guess that money is finally running dry.
>>
>>152672097
>if i had to use my pc i probably wouldnt post at all
That would be an improvement, that's the point.
Why the fuck would I want to spend time talking to people who admit that they have nothing to contribute besides pointless literal shitposts that they shit out on the toilet or on break during their shitty retail job?

There was one dude in /sp/ that managed to shit up the entire board for 3 years by just using a VPN provider from a website, its not like the mods are really trying to prevent bots

This is the correct observation. For the past 10 years it kinda feels like 4chan has shifted from a place where people come to discuss their hobbies to a place where people just come to bitch and moan about how everything is shitty. The site has simply been taken over by doomers who dont enjoy anything other than porn and who shut down any sort of discussion. People typically do not enjoy negativity all the fucking time so they just leave for greener pastures, mainly discord servers centered around hobbies where people actually talk about the stuff they enjoy.

Meta threads are pure cancer because at their absolute best, they consist of nothing but complete retards with horribly sorted priorities incessantly and impotently bitching and moaning about a board's quality instead making any kind of worthwhile attempt to actually improve it. Things like making high quality threads and posts, reporting rule breaking and low quality ones, encouraging others to report, and self moderating.
Furthermore, meta threads at their worst are a divide and conquer tactic employed by trolls where they complain about problems that they themselves are directly responsible for, they do this in an attempt to persuade anons to either stop coming here or join in on their destructive crusade to ruin this site purely for the sake of acquiring a fleeting sense of sadistic pleasure. They're nothing more than dopamine addicted sociopaths who don't care about the physical or psychological well being of themselves or others, and only care about getting their "precious" fix, exactly like your average junkie. Since they think like a drug addict, they must be treated like one, and either be rehabilitated of their unacceptably anti social and psychopathic behavior, forcibly removed from civilized society, or outright euthanized if they prove to be beyond saving.
Also, meta threads are against>>>/global/rules/3 >>>/global/rules/8 and>>>/co/rules/1
It is absolutely vital that all true /co/mrades fulfill their civic duty by utilizing the report function for its intended purpose against rule breaking threads for the greater good of our home.
