Welcome to /succ/! This is a project where I watch every episode of Steven Universe and count every cry. I'm limiting it to one season per weekend because any more than that would drive me insane. I was thinking about quitting because this is where the show gets bad but I made it this far. We're on Season 3.>Previous Threadshttps://desuarchive.org/co/thread/152569466https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/152472164>Super Watermelon IslandThere's always been a bit of Christ symbolism with Rose/Steven but this one lays it on thick. It's also lame how Malachite doesn't actually combine Lapis and Jasper's powers into something unique. You could argue it's a metaphor for how they aren't in sync but I think it's just lazy. Alexandrite also steals Opal's bow but at least it has this new... inflation power? Someone rein these writers in. One of the baby melons cries while Malachite and Alexandrite duke it out which is enough for an honorable mention but this is still a non-cry episode. Hell, even the honorable mention is dubious since it's not even crying... watermelon juice tears?
>Gem DrillPeridot cries while thinking about homeworld. There's a lot of close calls when they start drilling the cluster but I don't think Steven actually cries. I gotta say the Cluster bubbling themselves is a bullshit resolution. Hell, Steven talk no jutsuing them all into not wanting to form is also bullshit. But most bullshit of all, Steven doesn't even cry. Imagine feeling empathy for billions of force-fused souls that are also experiencing physical pain from the drill and not even crying. Are you a sociopath, Steven?
bumpin for op's scientific data
>Same Old WorldNo crying in this one though there's a lot of watery eyes. If Homeworld imprisoned Lapis in a mirror because they thought she was a crystal gem then why wouldn't the crystal gems free her? Lapis is a whole lotta missed potential. She peaked in Mirror Gem and never recovered.>>152671514Science is very important.
Yeah okay. I’m surprised nobody sat down and counted that already.
>Barn MatesI remember a lot of drama revolving around Zuke around the time this was airing. I was never a full-blown /sug/poster but I lurked occasionally and followed the show casually. Shipping or not, the pair is forced. Peridot has no reason to want to be friends with Lapis and Steven should understand why Lapis wants nothing to do with her. Also there's no reason why Lapis can't just fuck off out of this situation. I get she wants to be near Steven but she said she wanted to explore earth so there's no reason she can't just do that. Also Steven's been gone for at least one day and the gems just don't give a fuck I guess. This is one of the first episodes that's outright bad. Curse you Zuke. Couldn't even make Peri cry when Lapis broke her tape recorder.>>152671636It's a long series.
>>152671820There was a great SU artist (Tang-something?) who was basically groomed by Zuke and she deleted all of her SU stuff which is understandable but I miss it
>>152671514Based Jasper for not crying even once in the whole show.
>Hit the DiamondRuby cries after Sapphire hits a home run.>>152671889I'm sure it's still around somewhere.>>152672027I'll take your word for it, she doesn't seem like a crier.
>Steven FloatsActually a fun episode but no crying.
>Drop Beat DadHonorable mention to the roadie. Bizarre that we've had Steven imagine a roadie crying before actually crying himself. Season 3 has been a total dryfest so far. This is also where the show starts to go downhill but that might just be a coincidence.
>Mr. GregOh boy, this episode. I've always thought this one was overrated but it's a big one amongst the fanbase. Still hate how Greg can't sing. It's also weird how they reference Brooklyn and the Bowery but can't say New York City. Pearl cries after singing the only good song in the episode. Steven, Greg, and Pearl also cry during his song no jutsu. He's levelling up, I swear. Greg and Pearl also cry while reminiscing about Rose but that's still during the song so they don't get extra points. A return to form? We'll see.
>Too Short to RideAnother nothingburger episode. Peri sweats when Amethyst snatches her tablet but I don't think she cries. Gotta love it when the resolution to "Peri has no powers" is "Peri has a random power she pulls out of her ass even though Era 2 Peridots aren't supposed to have powers." Zuke is such a hack.
>The New LarsI will never stop being amazed at all the weird little rules I have to come up with because this show is batshit insane. If Steven cries while possessing someone it counts as a cry for Steven. I was excited for a Lars episode until I realized it was this one. Steven cries after watching Fangs of Love. No cries for Lars though he does break down after realizing Steven possessed him.
>Beach City DriftOh shit, another Kevin episode. Gotta love that Steven actually hates someone. Kevin somehow knowing that they're a fusion is weird. It'd be better if they never addressed it. Guess he's a pedo. Kevin cries after telling a fake story about his brother being sick. Pretty conceited to laugh at your own joke but at least it was funny.
OP you are insane but I applaud your effort and your dedication.
>Restaurant WarsJane (Ronaldo's GF) cries after seeing him pretend to confess his love for Kiki. Ronaldo is later seen crying while on his phone, presumably trying to win her back. I'm not giving Jane a real entry because she's such a non-character. Willing to bet even fans of the show ITT didn't remember her name. I'll give her an honorable mention though. >>152672977That's all I can ask for.
>>152673078Forgot image
Applaud you for bringing levity to these chaotic times. Even in war, we must remember to laugh together mocking sad rock cartoon.>>152672813My memories of the show was that Lars was the cool teenager in Steven's life with occasional soft moments, but these threads have made me realize that he cries about his emotions in every single episode appearance. Jesus, he loses all cred when he has a meltdown every storyline he shows up.
We need more of this pointless autism on 4chan. I wish you well OP.Does anyone know the current cry count?
>>152673078>willing to bet even fans of the show ITT didn't remember her nameI didn't even remember Ronaldo had a girlfriend
>>152673097OP keeps a tally but he doesn't post it until the end of the season
>>152673115Fair enough I'll stick around the see what the count ends at for S3.
>Kiki's Pizza Delivery ServiceSteven Universe wishes it could be on Ghibli's level. I like Chihiro's giant fucking tears in Spirited Away. Oh yeah, this is another tearless episode.>>152673086I think making levity at war is in the spirit of the show. Lars is only cool from Steven's perspective, we understand he's a neurotic basketcase but we want to see him grow out of it. As Steven matures his perspective shifts closer to the show's.>>152673097>>152673115Gotta keep 'em wanting more.>>152673107Exactly. I'll do this for all minor characters though it'll be a case by case basis.
>Monster ReunionCentipeedle cries when she remembers the trauma of being corrupted by the Diamond blast. Also stealth crying breakfast friend on the crayon pack. I'm starting to regret not doing a completely separate crying breakfast friend count but I'm too lazy to go back and redo it.
>Alone at SeaAnother episode I forgot completely. Y'know for all the complaints about Lapis not keeping her potty humor from Mirror Gem she actually shows it from time to time. Anyways I like how this show tries to tackle complex/adult subject matter but it's a little out of its depth here, pun intended. Maybe that's why I think Lapis is handled poorly as a character in general. I think Lapis and Jasper are the only major characters who haven't cried so far.
>Greg the BabysitterMuh.
What's the count at so far?
Hell yeah, good to see you're still at it anon. Keep up the good work.>>152672501>It's also weird how they reference Brooklyn and the Bowery but can't say New York City. This always bothered me too.
>Gem HuntLook at this sick fuck.>>152673803Total? It's 119 right now.>>152673941Thanks!
>Crack the WhipThis show's been so casual about having no plot that we need Jasper to randomly show up multiple times to make anything happen. Granted she is sort of hunting them down but don't ask me how it makes any sense for her to travel from that mountain to Beach City in... a couple of days? I think that explains the lack of crying too. When there's no plot there's no reason to cry. Looks like Amy might be having some personal drama coming up soon though. We can only hope.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_QLzthSkfM
>>152674171Jasper just spindashes when she wants to move fast.
>Steven vs. AmethystIt's cool to see Steven and Amethyst fight but they were wearing kid gloves and didn't want to make each other cry.>>152674193Touche.
>BismuthIt annoys me that Steven unbubbles Bismuth by accident instead of wondering who this mysterious secret gem is. Pearl cries after seeing Bismuth again. Pearl and Bismuth both cry after remembering their fallen comrades. Steven cries at the thought of using the breaking point. He cries a couple more times while fighting with Bismuth but they're all over the same thing. However, his final cry is over Rose's deception which is enough to award Steven another point. And Bismuth cries before poofing due to Steven's honesty.Annoyingly enough this counts as two production episodes but I'm counting it as one so the numbers might look a little wonky.
>BetaPeridot and Lapis have no chemistry whatsoever. Also Amethyst should already know that she's "supposed to be like Jasper" since she's had the other kindergarteners to compare herself to. I get fighting with her gives her a personal angle but it's not like this is anything new. Oh yeah, no crying either.
>EarthlingsI remember liking this way more when it came out. Anyways Steven and Amethyst both cry over being the worst gems together. Jasper brings up a good point that they rely on fusion way too much. I get that it's a good gimmick but she isn't wrong.
>>152674914this is when smoky quartz debuts right. fucking ugly design.
>>152674935I’m ok with it being the whole idea is it’s a bastardized fusion. What gets me is the QUALITY animation, like that one gif where it looks like they’re rotating a still image to kick Jasper.
>Back to the MoonNavy cries after Amethyst pretending to be Jasper volunteers to stay on earth. I want to chalk her up to an honorable mention like Jane but she has multiple appearances and speaking roles. (Technically Jane does too but whatever.) Eyeball cries because Jaspethyst gave Doc laptime. Steven cries after Eyeball narrates Rose shattering Pink Diamond.>>152674935>>152674966I agree that she's meant to be ugly on purpose though it feels like they rushed her design and concept.
>BubbledI know Steven's not the smartest guy but he had no reason to tell Eyeball he's got Rose's gem. I guess he thought they were both dead anyway but still. At least he didn't put her in his bubble until she got cracked. Steven cries from laughter from thinking about how he got into this pickle. Steven cries again as Eyeball threatens to cut out his gem. Pearl, Amethyst, and Garnet cry after recovering Steven from space. Steven cries too. At least we ended on a strong note. Stats coming soon.
>>152675123bless you opseason 3 sure is a drop in quality huh?
Season 3 was a disappointment on all fronts. There wasn't that much plot or drama so the crying took a massive decline. The cry percentage was a mere 45.8% meaning there are more episodes without tears than episodes with tears. The cry density was slightly lower than 1B at 1.13 so at least when they cried they made it count. Bismuth and Bubbled have some of the highest cry counts per episode at 6 cries apiece though Bismuth is double-length. Unsurprisingly, the season only managed to have a crystreak of 3. It made up for it a bit at the end so at least we have a halfway decent crystreak going into Season 4. And oddly enough the cry diversity is the same as Season 2. If there's one thing Season 3 did it's introduce a lot of new crying characters though most of them are very minor. Still radio silence on Lapis and Jasper.Steven wins gold though he's still been crying less and less each season. If Pearl cried as much as she did last season she could've tied. Considering how few cries there were this season she still made a decent effort, keeping up Silver. Amethyst and Bismuth are tied for bronze this season, each with a paltry 2 cries. Crazy to think Bismuth earned that after appearing in only one episode. Steven and Pearl also maintain Gold and Silver overall though Greg managed to sneak up and tie Lars for Bronze. Everyone was a disappointment and nobody improved.Best cry goes to Pearl in Mr. Greg. I'm hoping Season 4 can recover and at least get back up to Season 1B levels. I know they're introducing a new character with powerful cries so that might help. At this rate the crystreak is never being broken and there's a real chance Steven doesn't even get to 100. That would be a tragedy.>>152675246Yeah but the cracks were starting to show in Season 2. I think they never had a great plan for the Cluster and generally couldn't match the hype the previous seasons set up. Jasper and Lapis' plots are also a mess so focusing on them was a miss.
>>152675347>I know they're introducing a new character with powerful cries so that might helpAh yes, Greg’s maga cousin. And by that I mean, he surely did unleash powerful cries among tumblr fans.I know you’re talking about Blue Diamond
>>152671382The show is very self aware about all the crying and talking about their feelings.Crying Breakfast Friends was a jab at themselves. They even had lines like, "who wants to watch a cartoon about people crying?"But that's what I think is so special about this show. Despite the art style, it's not just another wacky cartoon where everything is played for laughs. It takes itself seriously and has meaningful drama. In terms of structure it's more like an anime. And it's clear the creators drew a lot of inspiration from anime. From Dragonball fusion dancing to Pizza Evangelion.
>>152676120There is nothing about this show that mimics anime in actual structure. All references are surface-level eye candy.
>>152676142It's a serialized story structure that takes itself seriously. That's pretty much a prerequisite for anime while western cartoons are traditionally episodic wackiness.Steven is like a battle shonen protagonist where his powers grow over time. Starting from being a useless child to ending at being a space god.Western cartoons almost never have their characters grow and change. Because that also runs contrary to the episodic nature of them. They want the characters to be static, so you can pick up any episode anywhere in the series and not be confused why things are happening.
>>152675123>he had no reason to tell Eyeball he's got Rose's gemHe felt bad about tricking the Rubies and then blasting them into space. Eyeball said she just wanted closure by seeing Rose Quartz so Steven revealed the information to make her feel better. It's Steven's fundamental character trait that he tries to help everyone. It also serves the long term narrative of Steven's journey of self discovery. Is he Rose or Steven? That's a huge plotline running through the whole series and the climax of the story with White Diamond. This episode helps to reinforce that Steven is losing touch with this humanity and starting to think of himself as Rose.It was also a clue for the viewer that Rose was really Pink Diamond. With Eyeball saying the color of his gem wasn't right for a real Rose Quartz.
>>152676239Ruby also says she's gonna take Steven's gem and take it back to homeworld. Which gets Steven (and the viewer) wondering what would happen to him if he lost his gem. Which turns out to be the climax of the story.Although it seems innocuous, this is an important narrative scene.
>>152671382>Steven Universe Cry 3Cry harder
>>152674818Jasper was a wasted villain
>>152674704Steven as a protagonist is often frustating because he lacks curiosity or critical thinking.
>>152672813If I was Lars I would wear a tin foil hat from then on, I wouldn't know if it really works but is better that nothing for the kid that can possess pepole at random. Seriuosly why are most human in this show shepple?
Steven doesn't really cry more than the average shonen protagonist.
>>152676492Shinji is not the average Shonen protagonist.
>>152675347Thanks anon
>>152671382Steven Trooniverse walked so DeCoon Mcdoriya could run.
>>152676120I know serialized cartoons have been a trend in the 2010s but on rewatch SU is remarkable in that regard. After each season finale is usually some episode discussing the fallout or cleaning up the trash afterward. It feels limited storywise but I like the idea.>>152676239>>152676371Fair points. I meant more from a self preservation standpoint but it's in-character for Steven to hurt himself to help an enemy, I was just surprised he'd be so brazen about it.
>>152676816Stfu, projecting faggot
>>152677615Gtfo, deflecting sperg.
>>152676371I enjoyed Colin Howard's episodes, they cute~
>>152676492Deku is not the average shonen protagonist
>>152676182How many NGE "references" did this show have? Anyone ever counted them all?
shit cartoon
>>152679875shit opinion
>>152680427Cope, he's right.
