I genuinely think that the idea of stopping now so they don’t “become the next simpsons” is pretty bullshit.
Smiling Friends lasted 27 episodes that were 11 minutes each, or 297 minutes total.
The simpsons golden age is at least 150 episodes that were 22 minutes each. Or 3300 minutes total. That’s the minimum accepted golden age, some people believe it’s more than that.
I do believe that actually following through on the announced seasons would have been a good compromise, but only being able to produce less than 10% of the golden age of the show you have been mocking for going on too long is crazy. Especially after promising 2 more seasons.
And Smiling Friends isn’t even Golden Age Simpsons quality wise. So they couldn’t come close in quality or quantity, and then insisted quality over quantity is their reasoning.
It won’t stop fans from running with it but it’s still a poor excuse.
>>
They probably started writing another episode about a retired character voiced by Zach and then gave up

They couldn’t figure out where to put the rotoscopes that last two seconds.

It's definitely a weak excuse. I acknowledge that Zach & Michael were writing each episode themselves, but Smiling Friends never seemed like a very demanding series to write for. For a duo that can riff and improvise jokes and scenarios on the fly, I don't see how they couldn't have simply let their directors carry more weight to try and remedy that burnout.

It is what it is, but that "don't want to become a zombie cartoon" excuse is pure bull for anyone who's not a Zach Hadel dickrider.

Writing cohesive comedic narratives for dozens of episodes is very different than just riffing off bullshit. There's only so many ideas people can have with any given scenario, and Smiling Friends as a concept was never very interesting to begin with.

I just think it's weird because the show never actually felt like it ever reached its peak. A lot of solid episodes with some stand-out episodes, but nothing on par with the best of old ATHF or Sealab 2021. Pulling the plug before it can actually reach those highs feels like a mistake.

Maybe Michael and Zach just aren’t capable of reaching the same heights? The seasons felt like they leaned more and more on referential humor in the last two seasons.

This. That's why AS went ahead and greenlit two more seasons, because it didn't pull in ratings.
>>
>>152690624
>Maybe Michael and Zach just aren’t capable of reaching the same heights?
The fact that Zach had to re-hash all his bits from a decade of podcasts kinda proves he just doesn't have that much material to work with. Writing good comedy is really difficult, that's not a slight against him, having 3 good seasons is way more than most people achieve.
>>
>>152690100
>I genuinely think that the idea of stopping now so they don’t “become the next simpsons” is pretty bullshit.
Where the fuck did this come from., OP?
They literally, simply said that they got burned because

>we got to a point where we just felt like that's a good spot to end it.
As if that's not a good enough reason
>>
>>152690678
Season 1 was pretty novel. But 2 and 3 felt increasingly formulaic even in the “random” humor. There were just so many specific recurring types of jokes that it was hard not to notice.

>>
>>152690709

Zach's jokes are just like that, it's variations of the same thing. They work on podcasts because of the context, but in a show they get kinda old pretty quickly. Not to mention he's terminally online and has the same pool of terminally online references to pull from for his humor as all the other terminally online web animators do.

They stop because they don't know how to animate in anything other than the now discontinued Adobe animating thing.

If they moved to a different animation platform then they wouldn't be able to animate the show exactly the same and people would complain that it looks weird.
>>
>>152695660
Adobe postponed that awhile back right after they announced it and they easily could've gotten Seasons 4-5 done before the deadline. People just can't stop making up random ass reasons about this.
>>
>>152690430
In all fairness, it's entirely right for them to be worried about becoming a zombie cartoon, because it was, but less because there were 500 episodes and more that they just weren't competent enough to keep it going. S2 and S3 especially had a lot more misses in jokes and weak episodes where it was clear they weren't really able to keep the humor goin, and were already cannibalizing themselves creatively; there's a distinct sense of them looking back on what they thought people liked about S1 instead of actually just properly riffing creatively on what'd be funny going forward.

Like the fact that ATHF got 11 really good seasons, a great movie, and the Side Donks while every piece of media was being written by the same two guys (please ignore that Plantasm and S12 were trash), while honestly having a LOT of the same humor but just immensely less animation, speaks a lot to Zach and Cusack just not being a very good duo.
>>
Ive never watched an episode of SF and i know nothing about the creators but I use to work in the industry. If you have the skills to make a show you probably have the skills to do many other things. Sometimes your interests change and the novelty is gone. The dream isnt to make a show, its to do what you want to do until you want to do something else.

While I still am genuinely curious as to what the true reasons were for going back on not making two more seasons, if they really feel like Smiling Friends has run out of steam and they want to move on, then fair.
I suspect it was either it becoming "too big" in fandom culture, they genuinely had no ideas for good episode hooks, or because of the recent Warner buyout.
They kept pushing that they refused to let it overstay its welcome, or didn't want to do it out of obligation, but it still baffles me as to how seemingly early they stopped. Then again, the show is six years old now and trended every premiere.

I doubt anyone would speculate why if it didn’t seem to affect other people and sacrifice the industry career by going back on the two seasons. If I have a cope, then it's the fact that Plantasm and S12 were shit while the Side Donks were still absolutely funny and in spirit with the show, so while they still have writing credit, I can't help but speculate that maybe they were pressured a bit more by higher ups to write certain ways, because Plantasm and S12 definitely had advertising and production value (especially in the animation, which ironically made it more unappealing), whereas Side Donks were just released unceremoniously and still animated like they were paid $2.68 between them

But then again it's not like it matters. Since we got 11.5 seasons and a movie, it's definitely ran a full course.

Everyone agrees Smiling Friends could only be possible with Zach & Michael writing, but they don't NEED to make so many contributions to the storyboarding/animation. Matt Stone & Trey Parker haven't animated anything on South Park in God knows how long. I doubt the Smiling Friends creators would be very burned out had they limited their involvement past the script phase to simply doodling rough concepts here and there and letting their directors handle the rest. They should know better than to do the actual storyboarding themselves for such a gag-heavy cartoon after the pilot.

>Matt Stone & Trey Parker haven't animated anything on South Park in God knows how long.
South Park is also a terrible show who should've died decades ago.

Debatable. Only this latest season/s was lame because they fell back into the same trappings of Season 20.

>It's more like if two Justin Roilands banded together to make a silly comedy cartoon and nothing more
So it's fucking trash
Because Rick and Morty was shit for the start and only subhuman retards who think "haha seed in poopoo chute funni" and "haha blood and death" think RLM is funny
Also two JR would be four times the child diddling

If you can’t design a project that you trust your team to carry out in the event you get hit by a bus, it doesn’t need to be a TV show
>>
how to animate like smiling friends:get your elbow rubbing friend group to do stylistically incoherent CG models, green screen in cheap actors for hire, use video effects instead of actually drawing something, outsource to other studios when you can't hack it, and despite all that still burn out after 3 seasons of kid's show length episodes.

You're missing the point. The SP creators have managed to keep making their hit cartoon for 30 years because they leave the animation work to their animation team, they try not to overthink things when writing, and they take breaks. That last one shouldn't be an issue since NO ONE expects an Adult Swim series to deliver new episodes at a consistent pace. Rick and Morty only manages because of that overconfident 70-episode order from years back as well as the production becoming bigger and bigger with each passing season.

Present-day Rick and Morty isn't too different from how Simpsons and Family Guy operate, but Smiling Friends was still made like any regular Adult Swim series: on a shoestring budget, one season at a time. Zach & Michael could've simply taken a break if they needed to, but going back on their promised 4th and 5th seasons and calling it quits is just a slap in the face to any fan. Or at least any fan not falling for their "zombie cartoon" bullshit excuse.

It has to do with the Paramount/WB buyout, read between the lines.
>>
The burn out comes from working for a corporation. Their website implies that they want to go full indie.

>It’s not just nostalgia… Animation really was better back in the day. It wouldn’t cost a dime more to make today’s cartoons feel less stiff and sterile – but current animation productions are so decentralized and bureaucratized that, creatively, they lack vision. Founded by Zach Hadel, Michael Cusack, & Aron Fromm – ZAM has one clear mission: to fix that. In an industry overrun with waste, bloat & derivative work, we strive to bring back what matters – bold, high-quality animation made by people who actually understand the process. ZAM is lean, independent, and obsessed with craft. We have a knack for producing animation that recaptures the magic of years past.

>Animation really was better back in the day. It wouldn’t cost a dime more to make today’s cartoons feel less stiff and sterile
This comes off like it was written by a YouTube cartoon reviewer who has no concept of how a studio makes its money. Also, I was never really impressed by the animation on Smiling Friends. They just add a lot of mixed media.

>In an industry overrun with waste, bloat & derivative work, we strive to bring back what matters – bold, high-quality animation made by people who actually understand the process.
Who writes this posts it on their company website? They describe themselves as the last and only hope for the entire animation industry. It's a delusional ego coming from 2 guys who got burnt out after making less than 30 episodes of an 11-minute cartoon over the course of 6 years. All of cusack's cartoons look like they were made for the internet with a low budget, what are they talking about?
>>
>>152691033
i felt this in the last season a little bit
>>
>>152690100
Nope. It was based to go out on top. So what if they had one good season left before it went to shit, leave them wanting more and itll go down in history as a great show with no bad episodes. Besides that airport one.
>>
>>152701112
The cringiest part is Zach and Michael comparing their short lived 11-minute show to long running, mainstream hit series like South Park, The Simpsons, and Family Guy. Their show never made it to the mainstream and it didn't survive long enough to become anything more than a meme. That's like a college football star comparing himself to Peyton Manning and saying "yeah, I know when to quit."

They should get shit on more for this. Not just for abruptly quitting out of insecurity.
>>
>>152706328
Zach has always been an insecure egomaniac. Even during the sleepycast days he was fine mercilessly mocking everything and everyone, but if someone even mentioned something he didn’t want to talk about he’d just shut down completely and refuse to even speak. A lot of times people wouldn’t even insult him and he’d get pissed if his voice was even mentioned.
Dude just puts together 5 minute meme animations and his fans treat him as if he’s a god.
>>
>>152706370
I genuinely think they’d melt down if people actually criticized them en masse. They wouldn’t be able to handle it.

It's obvious Zach is the one who couldn't hack it, he probably wouldn't even try to pitch another show

Episode 1 – “The Birthday Clown”

A depressed clown calls the Smiling Friends because nobody laughs at his birthday gigs anymore. Pim insists on helping him rediscover “true joy,” while Charlie realizes the clown’s jokes are just horrifying. After a disastrous birthday party involving screaming kids and balloon animals that look like eldritch monsters, the clown becomes happy when everyone laughs at how terrible he is.

---

### Episode 2 – “The Internet Goblin”

A lonely guy claims a goblin lives in his computer ruining his life. Pim believes him completely and tries to negotiate with it. Charlie discovers the “goblin” is actually the guy’s own social media addiction. But when Pim opens the computer, a real goblin crawls out and starts live-streaming chaos.

---

### Episode 3 – “Mr. Boss Gets Famous”

Mr. Boss accidentally becomes a viral motivational speaker after a clip of him screaming nonsense goes online. Pim wants to turn it into a positivity tour, but Charlie sees the fame turning Mr. Boss into an egomaniac. The episode ends with Mr. Boss happily losing fame after insulting a stadium full of fans.

---

### Episode 4 – “The Theme Park Job”

The Smiling Friends try cheering up a theme park mascot who hates wearing his costume. Charlie wears it for five minutes and experiences existential dread. Pim loves it so much he refuses to take the suit off and slowly becomes the park’s new mascot permanently.

---

### Episode 5 – “Alan’s Day Off”

Alan (Smiling Friends) takes a relaxing day off, but everything keeps requiring his extremely specific skills—fixing machines, solving puzzles, and stopping a bank robbery. By the end, he returns to work exhausted while everyone else had an easy day.

It's the most rational theory
The about page on their studio sells the idea the most. I see them going indie (again). Cusack has already been posting on YouTube again with a bunch of episodes of his original shows. Zach has been voicing in multiple indie toons.

Interesting. That suggests they knew they were planning to end the series for at least a month or two prior, which makes the random announcement in the middle of night on a weekday more confusing.

Yeah, Zach mentioned that after season 3 finished production, they pretty much decided to end the show.
