How long should a cartoon series last? Are filler episodes really a bad thing?
>>152704564One a scale from one to Game of Thrones, how disappointing will the TADC finale be?
>>152704564as long as it needs to tell the story. "Filler" episodes are both fine and arguably necessary for fleshing out characters and the setting even if they aren't directly tied to the events. They only become a problem if there are too many and it feels like they're stalling other things for no reason
I would've enjoyed TADC more if it was a 65 episode cartoon show with no plot.
>>152704640It has a plot?
>Liam choose to end MD with 8 episodesAnd yet, the whole series feels unfinished.
>>152704564>Are filler episodes really a bad thing?Basically >>152704631Hating filler episodes is, to me, low IQ shit. Some of the best episodes of X-Files are the ones where Mulder and Scully can just be themselves in the monster of the week and not the mythos episodes. It's been a decade since my last rewatch and I still think about how great the Rashomon episodes were.
>>1527045966.5It won't be a complete train wreck, but people are expecting both a plotty ending with the mystery neatly solved and all and each of the human characters to get a good satisfying ending, and I doubt Goose will deliver any of that.
>>152704677i think gooseworx is stretching the truth a bit, i suspect that while liam planned murder drones as a one-season show glitch told him "we're not doing more than eight episodes a season"
>>152704564but the therapy sections where the characters just state how they feel are the worst part of the show and feel shoehorned in
I'd be more satisfied if Glitch just said the actual answer.>"The current landscape of media typically involves 8 minute episodes and operating independently means the future of any given project is harder to predict because a lot of the merchandise used to fund everything is paid for on credit meaning that a prolonged series basically requires the vast majority of it flying off shelves. So the series was planned and outlined around the concept we may only get 8 episodes."
>>152704782It heavily depends on the type of show we're talking about. X-files had an overarching story but it was obviously not the 'point' of the show. Also not every creator wants to just endlessly hammer stuff out for a paycheck. Honestly that kind of thing is probably going to die off when network TV does
>>152704564>How long should a cartoon series last? Till the story that wants to be told is done. >Are filler episodes really a bad thing?Depends on the kind of show.
>>152704564>fleshing out characters and the setting even if they aren't directly tied to the events.indeed>They only become a problem if there are too manyYou mean, it's only a problem if they're BAD. A show can meander all it wants if at least 70% of it's episodes are good to amazing.People like to shit on books like A Feast For Crows, because the plot doesn't advance at all, but it brought the setting to life. It fleshed out all the background characters and bringing deeper motivation to all the characters involved. It was very well done and better than most books. Basically, the book was just "A Day In the Life", which usually only gets a few chapters in a normal or an entire series.Someone brought up XFiles and that's an excellent example of how filler episodes great, but it points toward how the premise of the show is important toward whether a show can handle filler or not. XFiles, Archer, Young Justice, Pirates of Dark Water and other shows can handle fillers, due to there being no real time limit on their overarching storyline. They can be more, INTERESTING stories, that can happen outside of that storyline, because the setting is expansive. A fantastical world exists outside of the show's little bubble and they can explore that world.Something like Avatar has a time limit, in that the main characters are constantly being chased and that can get old. There's also a war going on with important battles that need to be stopped, so that also limiting whether it can get filler episodes and still making sense. The writers kept the show short (for the time), limiting the filler, and it was a great series because of thatLost is a good example of how filler episodes can be bad, since the setting is very limited. They're on a fucking island, so exploration and finding everything to do on the island is limited as fuck. So to stretch things out, they focus on a lot of character filler shit, usually redoing the same thing.

>>152704564>"I am happy with my 9 episode season show that took more than 2 years to produce"lmao. just be honest and say indie animation is an unsustainable gig.
>>152706075that's roughly a 3h30min film being produced in 2 years
I like filler, It makes the world feel bigger and the characters more real. It's not just a headlong rush towards the plot.
>>152705583>Till the story that wants to be told is done. You don't mean it. If the creator thinks the story is done, but the fandom mob wants it to run forever, you're fucked.
>>152704564This and Smiling Friends is a massive overcorrection from "popular show lasts for 29 million seasons and never ends". Its like these millennial creators are terrified of being compared to the Simpsons that they call it quits too soon
>>152704596Soild 7. It won't be blatantly phoned in like GoT, but the writing is VERY clearly on the wall at this point. Episode 8 is going to have to establish the final arc basically from scratch, and 9 is almosty certainly going to be a rushed mess where they speed run to the end to fit in as many hype moments as possible.
Reminder that creators should have zero say in their work and they should be subdued by the online mob of their fandoms. Everything i don't like is George Lucas making The Phantom Menace.
>>152704564If it has a story, the length that serves the story. If it’s episodic it should have an engine capable of going on forever. If it’s a flop then artistic integrity matters the most. If it’s a hit then the jobs matter more. Not enough cartoon series adaptations exist for filler to be a relevant concern on /co/.
>>152704564>How long should a cartoon series last?2 seasons or 65 episodes, usually.
>>152704564I always assumed Amazing Digital Circus being as short as it is was due to Goose compromising with the limited funding independent cartoons have by keeping to a strict miniseries format that could still feasibly reach its intended ending. To hear they think filler episodes would be "wasting audiences' time" is kind of disappointing. I'm enjoying the ride nonetheless, but I don't like the implication that there *could have* been more one-off adventures with the cast. A better balance could've been struck.
>>152704596It will be Sopranos tier. We will fucking hate it for trying to be too clever and call Gooseworx a hack but eventually we will warm up to it years later
>>152707788That has to be the cringiest, most fucking drone opinion you could possibly admit to.
>>152707788>Actually admitting you're such a mindless queer that you're gonna change your opinion based on what everyone else thinks like a shitty dramaslop commentary youtuberI suggest you think about going longways, not sideways.
>>152704564Sitcoms aren't art. They're just made to fill a time slot.Glitch doesn't need to concern themselves with that and it gives creators with a artistic vision room to do what they want.
>>152707826>>152707860I am just making a prediction. No need to be so mad over something that hasn't even or might not even happen yet.
>>152707952>to do what they want. And what if that want to end the show. Would you be okay with that?
>>152704564"Filler" was just shitty non-canon arcs made for anime's when the anime was getting a little too close to where the manga was in the story, so they made some garbage to kill time before the manga had more material to animateKids don't know what "filler" is, they want to theorycraft but also want their theories confirmed and validated immediately. If TADC had some "filler" then these kids wouldn't be complaining about the show ultimately becoming the Jax and Pomni show because then other characters would have gotten their share of screen time by now
>>152707995Personally, I'd be sad, but that's okay.I'm allowed to feel that way.A piece of art that can affect me on such a deep level is beautiful.
>>152704677Because it was compressed. Liam imagined it as a gradually unfolding multiseason thing, got cold feet after episode 1, asked if he could cut out all the buildup and get immediately to the core plot, got.permission, and that was that. Even with the core plot cut down to the bare minimum, it was rushed to squeeze into seven episodes.
I'd rather have multiple books of stories instead of just one big book.
>>152704564The term filler is originally used on anime describe episodes added exclusively to allow manga to catch up to the anime.Calling an episode from a show that isn't adapting anything filler generally means two things: you are a giant lorefag, the episode is really completely disconnected from an otherwise serialized show.Netflix Castlevania Season 3 is a big example. Since it isn't actually adapting anything, the reason is simply to squeeze more screen time for a character that the writer's know people otherwise wouldn't give a shit about. Nocturne shows what happened when your OCs outnumber the characters people actually care about.
>>152704564>How long should a cartoon series last? I say six seasons and a movie is good. After that you usually tend to be pushing it.>Are filler episodes really a bad thing?Inherently, no. Filler episodes can be good for character interactions or just fun episodes (X-Files Monster of the Week stuff or Regular Show Holiday episodes). The problem is that many modern cartoons can’t do filler episodes well. Some Adventure Time filler episodes are funny or interesting and try to hard too hard to be deep (like that brick in a wall episode). It also doesn’t help if certain filler episodes are spammed too much (Steven Universe townie episodes).
>>152704564Personally? Between 50-60 episodes is enough for me. Courage the Cowardly Dog is my favorite show and it is only like 52 episodes.
