What started the decline of adventure time was the lack of consistency, every writer was basically at war with eachother to make their episodes canon and debunk another writer's episode. So if a character says X in one episode then in a later one they will be "i didn't actually mean X, i meant Y"

Like 80% of the time you get something with terrible rushed pacing or something that's so lukewarm and tepid that it feels like filler. Lore really has nothing to do with it, although the attempts at lore in that period is really clumsy and cringe. Lore didn't ruin the show, but it made it feel less interesting than it really was.
