Black shows like The Proud Family, The Boondocks, Corduroy, Moon Girl, Hey AJ, Weather Hunters, and Black Dynamite have art styles that complemented their black character designs better.As for EarthSpark and Lightyear, animators went with art styles that embellished their black characters' features in an unflattering and ugly way. These designs kinda remind me of that controversial Star Wars comic that had Mace Windu drawn in an exaggerated way that came about as racist.(1/2)

Even barring the scuffed looking human mains, Earthspark is burdened by other problems too.Like, take for instance, the whole "redeemed" Megatron thing. Obviously, they really like IDW's own redeemed Megatron, thing is, whether you like it or not, IDW did the leg work and set up context to parallel Autobot Megatron to how he used to be. Earthspark, does not bother, not really, they only allude to how supposedly bad Megatron used to be, so him being "redeemed" doesn't really mean anything when the audience is in the dark to Megatron's past. Same thing with Liege Maximo being the final big bad, sure, big super freak Transformers fans are bound to know who he is, but Earthspark just kinda drops him out of nowhere without explaining who he is and why he matters, and, any implied significance feels rather shallow.

Right off the bat, this comic's artist went with a weird art style that embellished Mace's features in a way that made his face look a monkey. I got a similar vibe from that Lightyear character and those two EarthSpark characters. Part of me also want to say that these four characters' ears are too big, but then I noticed big ears of animated characters are the norm.I think it boils down to the art styles and the character designers trying way too hard to design black characters with black features. It's literally the road to hell is paved with good intentions as those inoffensive black characters unironically end up looking like unflattering caricatures that some can see as racist.(2/2)
