Catmin wants to buy more hardware but with jewish manufacturers selling everything to AIslop companies the prices are too high for him. Also other jews are using catbox for commercial purposes like uploading AIslop media made by jeets without caring if the files violate Catbox's TOS and even US laws or not. tl;dr: jews and jeets ruin everything for everyone again.
It's really hard to express any kind of opinion on this. Like there's anything to say about another generic clone of SU/Turning Red, especially a thin slice. This could've been a CalArts student project that only 20 people have seen and I would equally believe it. Good.
>>152733473Don’t insult Steven Universe
>>152733215I need every person who thinks that framing a story around “being an American teen who likes magical girls” and treats it like “a clever vehicle for childhood introspection” should be thrown into a volcano.
>>152733492The main difference is that Befri is clearly some meta commentary about growing up and staying true to your friends, and it uses the whole concept of magical girls as a framing device for the actual main premise, while KPop is magical girl movie. Like it's just that without half a dozen layers of abstraction (?).
What makes Western magical girl fail but mahou shoujo anime succeed?
>>152733712Steven Universe insults itself and art et large by existing
>>152733778Western productions either copy the basic premise of magical girls (young/teen girls fighting monsters and bad guys) without adding something interesting, or do the radical opposite and coat the story and its characters in seven layers of irony and twists until the production becomes a parody of the magical girl genre. Also the toys based on these shows tend to suck so less kids bother with watching it.
>>152733778Because they get literally everything wrong?
>>152733778they don't have thishttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl2ck8I5spI
>The film followed 2 girl best friends who go through a platonic breakup. sooo, they were actually supposed to be lesbos, right?
>>152733215Thots:>I kind of like the idea of the protagonist being the girl who wasn't chosen to be a magical girl and what >>152733772 says. I'm sure it's not the first "magical girl" story to tackle that but that doesn't really matter to me.>I think this would work better as a show.>Birdie's dad seeing flashing images of Disney kids with their dads when she asked for his help made me huff in amusement.>it'd be interesting if instead this happened after Jules already joined the squad but then Birdie was the "chosen one" of some opposing force. Birdie could struggle with the short-term satisfaction of getting back at Jules and the squad vs. the guilt she feels over making Jules feel like she's a shit magical girl.>I didn't hate this style for Turning Red because it focused on tweens but it needed a different coat of paint. Not everyone has to be tiny waifs but I'm so tired of this particular look.>I don't really think this was going to go down the "magical girl bad/we're subverting tropes!!" route. It is coming across as a little too self-aware but I'd have to see what the magical girl squad is normally like.>>152733961While there are lots of jokes about there being potentially homoromantic undertones to that especially weirdly intense bond girls could form with each other as kids, no, crazy platonic "breakups" are a real thing.
>>152733778A lot of things go over American heads
>>152733778Strong womxn at the production lead, instead of funny salaryman and awkward Japanese girl
>>152733778I think it's a mix of once so much of one thing has been done so many times you feel like you need to do something to make YOUR version stand out, and a fear of sincerity (either from the creators or the producers). I have no doubt that there's lots of overlooked webcomics or self-published stuff by western authors that are completely sincere in how they do magic girls, it's when you want to go mainstream and reach a specific audience does things go belly-up. And considering no magical girl show has made it big in the west since Sailor Moon I wonder if the genre really has a place here.
>>152733778No true passion or respect for the genre, so it just comes across as a parody rather than played straight.Sometimes they try too hard to change stuff and be subversive, with magical girls that kick ass "hardcore style", when anime magical girls already do fight hardcore >>152733939Feels like only the French do it right with Lolirock and Miraculoushttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-qtKqhEJeMStar Vs The Forces of Evil is a special case though. While being overtly parody with the magical girl stuff sometimes, it still felt very original and "it's own thing".
>>152733645Can AI just fucking die already? Why does it need to ruin everything for everyone else?
winx club and ben 10 also did great as magical girl/boy shows
>>152733778Because all of them have like multiple layers of abstraction. Like it's not "This is a story of a group of magical girls fighting evil" and instead is the author creating a story about the idea of growing up with magical girls and uses the concepts more to talk about her own specific life experiences. Like one appeals to teen girls and the other appeals to people who were teen girls and grew up on a specific subgenre. Most american magical girl media is to referential to the idea of watching magical girl series. It's not here's a genre, it's here's a story about how said genre was meaningful to me.
>>152734233Americans can only do Magical Girl series right when they're boys.
>>152734241>This is a story of a group of magical girls fighting evilKpop Demon Hunters hit jackpot with doing this and combining it with kpop music and a solid story
>>152733548>What if Madoka was really about MadokaWell, maybe that could w–>And most of the story was about girls' inability to get along with each other just like I remember junior high, with minimal action sequencesI'm actually glad Cagle lost her motivation to continue working on it. People actually contributed money to her navel gazing ineptitude. KNOWING HOW TO DRAW WELL DOES NOT CONFER STORYTELLING WISDOM, IT NEVER DID
>>152734241This, I'm no connoisseur of the genre but I feel like you can count the number of of western-made magical girl shows that played it pretty straight and actually found success on one hand.
>>152733548It's Madoka Magica that ruined them. 15 years ago it propagated the idea that Magical Girls are a valid format to deconstruct, but they don't know anything about what they are trying to deconstruct.>>152734110>And considering no magical girl show has made it big in the west since Sailor Moon I wonder if the genre really has a place here.Arguably the '10s pony show started as a magical girl show and lasted ~8 years. It likely worked so well because the showrunner wanted to make a magical girl pony show. When done well
>>152734338imagine if the comic being on hiatus is because she is working on an animated proyect related to said comic, or her first comic (KiwiBlitz) or another unknown proyect. She said she is working on Pokemon stuff (and doing vtuber stuff for her niche fanbase) but it is pretty rare that she is spending her work time on that since her comic went on hiatus, considering that it is Poke TCG we are talking about. I am sure she is additionally working on something behind the scenes.
>>152734363I think you could count the number of western-made magical girl IP that played it straight on one hand.
>>152733492i've said it before and will again, but kpop dh was so big because it tried to think about what little girls would actually enjoy as a power fantasy (cute outfits! fun hair! everyone thinks you're cool and amazing! you have your own merch! hot and troubled but good at heat boy loves you!)
Whenever there's a new western magical girl show, /co/ always asks 'why Sailor Moon and not Precure' and the answer is simple: most of these women grew up in a time where they only HAD Sailor Moon (and CCS and Tokyo Mew Mew but clearly those didn't leave as much of an impact). Precure didn't debut until 2004 and the dub didn't air until 2009 and only in Canada. A lot of these people simply didn't have access to a wider range of anime and it becoming more mainstream in the west coincided with Madoka's release.
>>152734417>Lolirock>Miraculous>Netflix She-ra?? Are we gonna count She-ra as a magical girl?>Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Rriders>Winx>W.I.T.C.HHey there's six if you wanna count She-ra. 7 if you wanna count the colorful equines.
>>152734425>it tried to think about what little girls would actually enjoy as a power fantasyHalf of the reason western entertainment is falling is due to how much the artistic class has become allergic to creating power fantasies, as if that was a moral failure.
>>152734400I'm genuinely pleased she found paying work, but Jesus Christ SD was a disappointment, especially from someone who was living and working in Japan when Madoka came out, and could be expected to know better. All the themes in SD could have been woven into an action story the way even Butch understood to do, instead of this dismal therapy tale pretending to be MS. If you're going to borrow a genre respect its conventions instead of just wearing its trappings.
>>152734382>It's Madoka Magica that ruined them. 15 years ago it propagated the idea that Magical Girls are a valid format to deconstruct, but they don't know anything about what they are trying to deconstruct.This. >>152733772>>152733492I'm willing to bet that if this film would've been an analogy to friends drifting apart and making new friends, Jules/Jewels/whatever would've stuck to being a magical girl because Bertie/Birdie/whoever has to accept what's best for her friend over her own desires.

>>152734437it's funny cuz Precure hits all the checkboxes that these western magical girl ripoffs try to do so you'd think that crowd would love it
>>152740630It was bad and funny enough it was basically for a similar reason that the movie seems to be a metaphor for; I was maturing at a faster rate than she was and we couldn't handle it.
>>152742270>>152742381The accusation was that Pixar used AI to come up with story ideas and then the actual people try to expand on them
I talked to a friend regarding "friendship isn't always forever" stories and the thing we noticed was that it's one of the more difficult themes to actually portray in the moment The vast majority of examples are done to show the friendship had already withered off-screen (and also often done with a newly introduced character) because if said friendship is given too much time and energy to be lovable, a falling out would just risk being frustrating Most of the time in real life platonic break-ups are just people simply seeing each other less due to different wants and by the time it's over you dont even notice it (and if it's one person doing all the work to keep it alive it'd just make the other person come across as an apathetic jerk) It's long and frankly boring and trying to cram that in a 2 hour time-frame would be difficult to navigate through satisfyingly. If Birdie and Jules' bond IS lovable, the audience isn't gonna want said bond to be destroyed I get that they want the film to be mature but if this film came out there'd be one side who'd accuse Jules of being a shitty friend who abandoned the one kid who was her only friend and the other side accusing Birdie of being a co-dependent clinger who can't accept what's best for Jules finding her own self-worth (notice how the other clips have Birdie doing the decisions for her) I don't think the film would have ended on them hating each other but if it actually stuck to its guns, it would have at the very least make it clear that they aren't friends anymore
Wait a sec, is Birdie or Jules the director self-insert?
>>152736772Since this is concept art I think that Jules is pretty ok. Does a good job at capturing that awkward middle-school stage where you're too old to be dressing a certain way but are too anxious (or your parents won't let you lol) to be dressing more mature. This wouldn't have been Birdie's final look either, and it's clearly meant to quickly convey things about her characters (she's boisterous and immature) but holy shit I can't blame Jules for ditching her lmao.
>>152742716Believe it or not you can be Birdie and Jules at different points in your life.
Wait wait wait wait.....if Jules' magical girl self is noticeably more mature (as part of the metaphor) are the other magical girls younger than they look?
>>152742705>If Birdie and Jules' bond IS lovable, the audience isn't gonna want said bond to be destroyed oh no, this reminds me the last platonic breakup movie i know is ruby gilman and nobody liked how the breakup happened
>>152742952To be fair, that could have been avoided had Ruby's bond with her human friends was given more chemistry and care. If you're going to severe a friendship, you replace it with something equally good if not outright better.Unfortunately that movie was Ruby Gillman.I think BeFri would have ended with Birdie making new friends and happily accepting Jules is with a social group that could provide to her what she can't Maybe keep the best friends medallions but put it somewhere safe rather than wear it

>>152762919>>152761064Madoka came out more recently and spawned countless memes. It is a real subset of people who saw Sailor Moon and a couple others on TV at one age, but remember more about Madoka whether or not they saw it, and don’t know Precure exists. To them this is the magical girl genre and Madoka was an innovation because that’s all that made it through Western mainstream osmosis. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t delve more into a genre but I don’t think it has to be that deep if the work is good. Geek cred is pretty cheap.
>>152733778Mahou Shoujo are genuine stories played straight whereas "Western magical girl" stuff is usually a shallow parody of a surface level pastiche of the genre they've absorbed through pop culture osmosis. There's a TV Tropes article that sums it up pretty well: > Simply put, this is what happens when a Parody (generally a mean-spirited one) is created by people who have an ill-informed and/or superficial impression of their target, resulting in a parody that only satirizes a work's most obvious surface-level aspects, if even that—while failing to satirize any of its substance or themes. Thus you may see something that resembles a signature scene of another work with a nonsequiter gag shoved in to get a laugh. Sometimes, it can come across as if the satirist just watched the trailer or commercials (or relied entirely on the work's general reputation and/or common misconceptions about it) and then wrote the parody from that. Close enough, they decide.> The result is generally a parody that only bears a superficial resemblance to the work that is supposedly being parodied. Just grab an Iconic Outfit, a catchphrase (whether or not it's authentic), and an Iconic Item if you're lucky, and you're good to go. Expect the parody to coast on Parody Names, Stock Parodies, and Vulgar Humor. All too often, such a spoof will come across as smug and sneeringly superior in tone, as if simply being aware of the source material and not liking it properly equips one to satirize it.Stuff like W.I.T.C.H., Winx Club, and even Rainbow Bright and Sabrina the Teenager Witch are closer depictions of what it means to be a "Western" Magical Girl. One thing they never realize is that the genre evolved from making "cute Witch girl" stories akin to Kiki's Delivery Service or regular girls who just have a magical item fall in their lap that leads to hijinks before we got something like Sailor Moon which was just: "what if the power rangers were cute Witch girls."

>>152764541Sort of>>152764600And that makes a difference how? It’s the exact same scene, even the part where she dodges a ladder is literally identical to a shot in FI where the character is dodging kids playing with that Filipino stick game I don’t know the name of
>>152743202When did this happen? It's sickening
>>152743232Pooftas in the entertainment industry don't count as regular people
>>152743250> Hundreds of literal who's on Twitter seething in ALL CAPS that the "cut content" of Elio would have "saved the movie"> It was just a different skin for his bike and a cutaway where he has a kid with a random guy in the undesignated futureThey ALWAYS lie
>>152764735Anon, be real with meHow the fuck do you plagiarize a movie scene that didn't even come out yet?As much as /co/ riffed on RGTK, most of us had enough common sense to know it wasn't literally made to copy Turning RedDo you seriously think this storyboard made years back had some guy at Pixar spy at Dreamworks as they were making their own movie that was in production for years back to make a storyboard that would have most definitely been a lot different in the end?
>>152743298Axl was raped by a man when he moved to Los Angeles btw. He's very open about it.
>>152743662Who stated this and was it a jewish "intellectual"?
>>152733778Mahou Shoujo is about girls coming of age.Western Magical girls is about resenting having to grow up.
>>152747053You have to go back.

>>152764874So was his anus
>>152765007Doesn't W.I.T.C.H. have coming of age themes at least in the comic? It's explicitly clear they're older when they transform and the show even has a joke about it when Cornelia is happy to see her boobs bigger
>>152763093I'm sure the commentors on the internet are like that but I do not believe the Hollywood people are like this
>>152765129*happy to see her boobs exist
>>152760762Milky is associated with innocence and sweetness due to children drinking it and its sweet taste.
>>152733772Well K-pop also has the thing with the main character being half demon and needing to hide it. The difference is that K-pop looked cool and was entertaining, and this other one looks lame. I couldn't watch the entire 4 minute clip.
>>152738074The comic is Italian, the cartoon is french. The cartoon massively ignores the comic, so if anon is talking about the cartoon then saying "the Italians did it" is really wrong.
>>152764586Uhh Inside Out and Toy Story off the top of my head. Not strictly unpopular movies.
>>152764845You could pick any random person who works at any American feature animation studio and I guarantee you they’re friends with someone who works at at least one other studio. Everyone tells their friends what they’re working on and can even show them if they really want to, do you think that the execs don’t know exactly what every studio is doing? You don’t even realize the childish grudge the execs all have against the other studios. I don’t know what to tell you dude it’s exactly the same. I wish the movie was out now so I could do an overlay and show you exactly how ridiculously alike they are
>>152764874>reading thread about cartoons and crying and friendships>BTW AXL GOT RAPEDare you talking about this story where he got away or a different one?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-XYnXiyO6k
>>152746458eh kinda... not nearly as cool though.
>>152765484Alright, I'm convinced you know something but I'll keep an eye out if there any more parallels plot-wise going by what we can piece together with the plot herei.e. Jules' transformation, the Eternity Squad even being a thing, her gem causing problems at first, etc I don't really see an island parallel with Befri or the whole memory loss part based on what is publicly knownThem simply sharing similar themes about growing apart isn't enough to convince me either project couldn't have co-existed or if it's a situation like Rio vs Newt
>>152765759Not every Kirby boss is as cool as Zero 2Dark Nebula is the bare minimum of what'd you expect but with zero flair

>>152751011I'm roughly 12 years older than you, been watching this movies and reading these books and playing these games since I was a kid, and came to pretty much the same conclusion. There's a lot about the OT I find kind of whatever nowadays, and as an adult watching the opening of RotJ is kind of galling in how it's only the third movie and we're already knee deep in ANH recycling. A lot of the shots even look the same, especially around the Death Star 2: Force Lightning Boogaloo introductions. The PT is STILL gobsmackingly bad, just some of the best actors of that era giving some of the worst performances of their lives with some of the most ridiculous lines anyone's ever been made to say in a major motion picture. Naturally, I was ten when I saw these turkeys and enjoyed them without any real thought. Because what I mostly remember is all the cool spinoff stuff at the time. It was a golden era for disposable SW spinoffs and I was exactly the right age to enjoy it.The ST is more technically competent in comparison, but also way more boring and, for a variety of reasons, probably worst as a trilogy. The PT are worse movies, but Star Wars thrived again during their stewardship, whereas the ST set the franchise on fire. The spinoffs are hampered by needing to be bigger, major deals, and almost none of the ones on the scale of the PT exist or get to be their own things. Though, I'm not 10 anymore so perhaps I'm just not encountering them. As you say, there are some good ones from here regardless, but between the lack of more far flung EU material and the way modern games are made, it feels like a night and day comparison between the PT and ST eras.
