Probably to avoid confusion with Robotnik's pet Cluck from SatAM (as if there being two completely different Sonic cartoons on at the same time wasn't confusing enough).>>152769554Some of the staff actually worked on R&S during the Spumco era.

I wonder if any of AOSTH's direction came from this Sonic 2 strategy guide.
>>152777873Well it was the case that Tails being brown in both SatAm and AoStH was due to the materials given to DiC by SEGA were the original drafts of Tails’ design where he was brown rather than orange. I would assume the same was true for the makers of the strategy guide. As for Grounder, it may be a coincidence or the same situation.
>>152779176Actually now I think about it, it’s kind of interesting how SEGA didn’t really go for the recoloured sprite trope when it cameto Badniks until the Egg Pawns.
>>152775422It's based on a meme about Artorias from Dark Souls, there were a million variations on it back in the day. Right now, I can't find a single one, though.
In a practical sense Grounder is the better robot. He comes with a bunch of different modules for his arms on top of the drills he usually has. The only difference he has to a regular lanky henchman is the fact he's a robot and Sonic can dismember him without pissing off the censors
>>152779296*The only difference Scratch has
He is unusually handsome

>>152769554>Is there a reason why Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog looks eerily similar to the late seasons of Ren and Stimpy? Some of the same staff and approved as a cash grab to cash in on the success of R&S. R&S was in the middle of its run when this show came out in 93. Funny enough what hurt it also gave it a longer shelf life than the other show. In 93, Adventures looked like just another Bakshi/johnk show. The art style had been seen in mighty mouse, R&s, etc. That and the writing made it feel like a retreat. Kids didnt take it that serious. The other show on the other hand had an over arching story line, fantasy and scifi elements. It felt like anime before anime really made it big. Fast forward 30 years and we have much fewer shows in the style of adventures and 2300429000 animes that beat the shit out of the story telling of SatAM. Also, Pender's writing in the comic retroactively damages the show
>>152801301Hmm, you have put into words my feelings of SatAM very well.Out of the two shows AoStH was always my favourite, I think it was because I like it when Sonic is not serious.
>>152801301For me SatAM is and was a very workmanlike show, what the kids today would call 'mid', not bad but not amazing either, despite some good ideas. The same could be said for AoStH if the animation was more consistent (certainly the TMS episodes looked much better than SatAM's). I think people's opinion on it (SatAM) really depends on if you grew up with it or not, OR if you really like Sally/Bunnie and just wanted to see them in action. In many ways it is a show about Sally with Sonic just being the facilitator for her plans. Being an action show the capacity for people to come up with their own lore and fanfiction adds to the enjoyment, if however you don't find it compelling then there's not a lot to it under the surface; the robot designs outside the SWATbots (which are excellent) are bland, the writing despite being geared towards action still has moments like pic related which make no sense (also note it's the same joke that Sonic pulled in AoStH but people like Nostalgia Critic don't give it shit), Dulcy is an abomination and Antoine to me ends up becoming sympathetic due to how much the writers just want to bully him for just doing his job. Ultimately whilst AoStH is super jank I prefer it because I genuinely find the world it builds to be more interesting, simply because of how wild and diverse it is. Whereas SatAM just feels like another action show to me but not excelling in one area enough to make me want to rewatch it.
>>152802538Can't really call it an action show when the action itself sucks ass and feels like an afterthought.
>>152802591Yes, that's the key issue, I felt more from this one bit in AoStH than I did watching all of SatAM's action scenes. I guess you can argue that SatAM is more an adventure show which is fair enough, there's a decent amount of mysticism which is pretty cool but because the show is episodic they can't *really* lean into it. So many SatAM episodes revolve going around old ruins and finding relics but they never really go into it, I suppose like a lot of Sonic lore where you're just left to fill the gaps yourself.
>>152802626Funny seeing TMS animated clips i remember Milton Knight hating Japanese studios cause they would make the drawings more clean
>>152802762Milt's a funny old guy, I feel bad for him because he can do some very wild and wacky stuff but he never quite had a break out moment and now he's just remembered for his AoStH work and maybe Cool World/Felix the Cat.

>>152804149I love these redesigns.
>>152804473Yeah, they're comical but also better designed mechanically
>>152802626You really have to wonder about the budget of SatAM. You can tell they wanted to do some multi season story like avatar but it just never came together. Not even with the sega branding.
>>152805181Well it's less SEGA and more ABC, they were the network the series broadcast on, (at the time the creators called it 'The network show') and as such they were able to part finance it. It's also the reason why the two shows at the time were so different, as ABC didn't want audiences to be confused with the cheaper syndicated show (AoStH) - in case you're wondering DiC had done this sort of thing before with Ghostbusters and GI Joe where you had some episodes made for a network (I forget which) and other lower-budget episodes made for a syndication package (in case you're wondering, syndication is just when you sold a TV show to a bunch of stations rather than just one TV network) - Also you have to realise at the time it was very rare for shows to do ongoing narratives, at least in the west. Even more serious shows like Batman TAS were mostly episodic. It's not really until we get to the mid-to-late 90's were it becomes more common. So whilst Ben Hurst was ambitious with his writing and worldbuilding he wasn't really able to do the ongoing stuff until the second season.>>152805044Eggman just needs more robots, I like how with Sage they've given him an intelligent person to bounce off, even if she's a hologram.

Sonic has always had a lot of japanese Manga influence despite it being sold to japan as a extreme US game.Sonic is partly based on mickey and Felix the cat. Felix is currently more popular in japan than the US. You csn get candy with him even today.Robotnik is just time bokan + Studio Ghibli + Mario. Fighting robots at the end of each stage is from time bokan and the robot fighter part of astroboy where astro would eventually fight Pluto.Sonic 2's relationship with tails was based on piccolo and Gohan. Super sonic form was based on super sayien goku. The emeralds were a mix of dragon balls and the diamonds from time bokan.Robotnics clothes and boss robots all came from time bokan
