We generally started with doing fan art of our favorite animated shows or movies, then changing things as we saw fit to develop our own styles. If you care, you'll figure out how to slightly alter and blend human and animal features. The interest has to be there. If you're just looking to do art and try to make fast money from commissions...well...you might be slow to learn due to only having a surface interest, and your art will probably come off as uninspired and dull. I HAVE seen some good shit from people who were really good in normal art, though. Surprisingly, they only did a few anthro pieces. Not sure if they were afraid of being seen as "weird", and losing work because of the anthro stuff, even though it was clean.
