Do you remember GoBots? It's such an interesting example of parallel development, running alongside Transformers but much less well-known and successful. Still, the cartoon has some interesting plots and neat ideas. And 65 episodes is not bad for a cartoon, especially by today's standards.

Japan made an anime series called Machine Robo based off the toys that were repurposed into GoBots in the US. It was weird seeing Cykill's design used as a good guy character. The shows themselves were OK. I want to find Challenge of the GoBots and watch it. I never saw much of it as a kid.

Easy-peasy, it's on the torrent sites:

It is my guess. Not a scientific study. It feels like either they long for old retro feelings and found Go-Bots or it is some inner anger at modern Transformers and so they found Go-Bots too.

Yeah I've been watching reruns of it on MeTv these last couple of months on days I'm up at 3AM. I like how out there some of the plot lines can be. I appreciate that they went with a more simple style with their designs so the toys would translate better and more directly, but I'm not really captured by any of the designs for them from that cartoon adaptation.

Gobots were simpler while Transformers had much more complex and intricate transformations and I think that appealed to boys more.

>>152783748
Yes.
Just popping arms out the side and flipping over the car to reveal the face that's always there was some lame ass play thought up by lazy tards.
On the other end of that, you had Transformers jets that were complex as fuck and completely incoherent as to how the fuck their transformations worked - but were still cool as fuck.

Sadly, Orbots was one of several 80's shows I missed out on back then for one reason or another. I have nothing against Orbots, it's just that I haven't seen a single episode of that show before. It looks interesting, though.

For some added context, I barely caught a few episodes of Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and missed out on shows like Galaxy High School, Bravestarr, Robotech, Ulysses 31, Ring Raiders, and Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs.

Gobots were ok. Show suffered from a lot of Johnny quest level writing and character designs.

The car bots mostly sucked compared to the first few waves of transformers too. It wouldnt be until the combiner city toys that transformers would be as bad as gobots.

Also, gobots could be sketchy. They were assembled with pins that were held in with friction. It wasnt uncommon for pins to pop out and your gobot just fall appart

course because of this and the fact that Machine Robo/Go-Bots leaned a lot heavier on the small guys, overall I'd say the original 80's Machine Robo/Go-Bots line holds up better than a lot of Transformers G1, at least when you set aside most of the Tonka(and other companies Tonka sublicensed doing Go-Bots merch to) made stuff, even if I do think there is a certain charm to some of the Tonka molds

>>152781961
For a random 80s cartoon it did have some interesting scifi mythology to it.

It was one of the fist times you had a fully built over planet like Coruscant. And just like Coruscant it had 20+ levels with the bottom ones being more of a myth that no one had any idea what was down there any longer. Most believed there was nothing alive below level 7.

Unlike Transformers, the gobots were not in any major decline, they had a massive population and both Renegades and Guardians huge fleets of ships. Renegades had a 5 mile long super ship with a cloaking device that could only be detected by the gravity it was forming out of its size.

Gobots had regular dealings with lots of different aliens including aliens from other dimensions. Earth was not that unique to them at all.

Tom Scioli has a bit of a philosophy with his comics where it's often meant to come across as what would happen if you were to transliterate a kid playing with their toys directly into comic form, which probably contributes to some of the apparent "jumpiness" that sometimes happens but also results in some wonderful weirdness

That's right, it has that stilted stop-motion look which - alongside the old colored-pencil sketch look - gives it a weird spoopy vibe. That and him mashing so many different toy lines together makes it look like a fever dream.

These kinda remind me of Bayformers in a good way. Now I suddenly want a Cy-Kill toy that turns into this. Imagine the fights he and the reimagined Leader-1 can have with both having aircraft forms. Also, one cool thing about Tux/Stretch is that he turns into a limo and his robot form has a top hat. It gives him a dignified look that also lets him stand out amongst other GoBots.

Crasher only has 7
Shows how painfully niches GoBots is barely above Machine Robo Rescue

The head kinda looks like Inferno from Beast Wars.

I understood it that way, that the artist wanted a “what if movie“ design.
I always found it weird and interesting that the evil leader is a chooper. But Megatron transformed into a gun.
Pic looks like something similar but with an Erektor crane meme.

Wow, I've never seen a bigger crane erection!
