Do you remember GoBots? It's such an interesting example of parallel development, running alongside Transformers but much less well-known and successful. Still, the cartoon has some interesting plots and neat ideas. And 65 episodes is not bad for a cartoon, especially by today's standards.
>>152782742Beamer looks stupid but he walks with style.
>>152781961Go-bots fanart?
>>152782817Yes, please!>>152782836Oh shoot, is this real? A fan show or comic?
>>152782848Fan art. It is weird how much fanart for GoßBots exist. I guess so many obsessive Transformer fans that leach out to other transforming robots.
>>152782879Huh, that's surprising. I would have thought TF fans would be disdainful of GoBots fans, seeing as they're competition. Great pic, btw.
>>152781961Japan made an anime series called Machine Robo based off the toys that were repurposed into GoBots in the US. It was weird seeing Cykill's design used as a good guy character. The shows themselves were OK. I want to find Challenge of the GoBots and watch it. I never saw much of it as a kid.
>>152782931>I want to find Challenge of the GoBotsEasy-peasy, it's on the torrent sites: https://limetorrents.ws/challenge-of-the-gobots-the-complete-series-including-the-mini-series-dvd-rip-3677768.htmlI've had a blast watching it.
>>152782913It is my guess. Not a scientific study. It feels like either they long for old retro feelings and found Go-Bots or it is some inner anger at modern Transformers and so they found Go-Bots too.
>>152782986
>>152783030This artist made originally some for transformers.
>>152782931The faction teams were different than the US?
Like sentai, a cool Japanese property who's reputation was destroyed by American slop.
>>152782986And they already crossed-over to Tramsformers.
>>152783230
>>152782913>>152782986A lot of casual fans dislike it, but for TF fans it's like a two cakes situation where they're just happy to have another transforming robot franchise.
>>152782742I wish Cy-Kill hadn't been such a lame-ass motorcycle but something larger and tougher instead, like a tank, big rig, or even an off-road vehicle. He looks so stupid holding the front tire with his hands.
>>152783272Thats a good point.
>>152783272>another transforming robot franchise>robotsGoBots aren't robots, they're cyborgs. They're people! PEOPLE!
>>152781961I never watched it or had the toys. I did buy some of the newer Transformers based on Gobuts though Did the show have any cute girls or humans at all?
>>152783326Not aliens?
The names were such awful but funny puns. >Hans-cuff>Pumper & Dumper>Spay-CAnd the evil scientists, the Zeemon, were like parodies of German Nazi scientists.
>>152781961Yeah I've been watching reruns of it on MeTv these last couple of months on days I'm up at 3AM. I like how out there some of the plot lines can be. I appreciate that they went with a more simple style with their designs so the toys would translate better and more directly, but I'm not really captured by any of the designs for them from that cartoon adaptation.
>>152781961I know more about the Japanese version that used the same toys but had a completely different story.
>>152783091SEA or white neckbeard hands typed this post.
>>152783326Weren't the alien minds inside robots?
>>152781961Go-Bots started out more popular than Transformers. Until you got Transformers toys on your birthday to compare to your goofy ass Go-Bots.
>>152783452So 4chan.
>>152783269>>152783293>>152783325Post Vamp. He was everyone's favorite.
>>152783721Why do we have so many SEAs and jeets anyway?
>>152783709Gobots were simpler while Transformers had much more complex and intricate transformations and I think that appealed to boys more.
>>152783748Yes.Just popping arms out the side and flipping over the car to reveal the face that's always there was some lame ass play thought up by lazy tards. On the other end of that, you had Transformers jets that were complex as fuck and completely incoherent as to how the fuck their transformations worked - but were still cool as fuck.
>>152783165>>152783258>>152783269>>152783293These re-imaginings are fun but far too soft & rounded to be transformable between modes. Their parts look like squishy marshmallows. Robots should have blocky, hard edges, like this >>152782879.
>>152781961It’s funny that Hasbro owns the Gobots IP now.
>>152783740>vamp>heEx-squeeze me?!? Vamp sure did have a cool robot form, even the toy looked great. Weird and space alien-y.
>>152782913I can't speak for anyone, but I liked both GoBots and Transformers despite them being rival brands.>>152783273Hey, a more intimidating vehicle form for Cy-Kill would have cool, but at least writers made up for that with his personality and ruthlessness.
>>152783395>BuggyManYeah. They really had fun with the names. But they probably just threw names into the ring.
>>152784345Oh definitely, Cy-Kill had a fantastic voice actor, ruthless personality and great lines rivalling Megatron's. Shame about the trike body though, it just wasn't intimidating at all and the "cycle" pun on his name didn't help.
>>152783071just like Transformers, where the Insecticons were the only real bad guys along with other toys that weren't imported in Diaclone, in Machine Robo all the bug/monster like robots were the bad guys and the realistic Earth vehicles and other vehicles were all heroic.
>>152784345>iked both GoBots and TransformersSure, but what about Orbots? (the discount dollar store robots!)
>>152784036Thats the Transformers Animated style. But sure they are the blocky forms we all know.>>152783740Ok?
>>152783709>>152783748>>152783793Go-Bots were lacking the robot form to lock like a person. You can see that with the two big ones.
>>152784051Did they buy it?
>>152784345>>152784555Cool, trips!Sadly, Orbots was one of several 80's shows I missed out on back then for one reason or another. I have nothing against Orbots, it's just that I haven't seen a single episode of that show before. It looks interesting, though. For some added context, I barely caught a few episodes of Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and missed out on shows like Galaxy High School, Bravestarr, Robotech, Ulysses 31, Ring Raiders, and Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs.
>>152784427Ok. Didnt knew that. Thanks for that info.
>>152784345>>152784829Lmao. Are these from a comic series? Where can I find it?
>>152784865There were from a comic book that might here been released in Europe. I saved these from a GoBots thread a few months ago.
>>152784555What about Convertors?
>>152784852
>>152784804I had that tank guy. He was actually a really cool toy tank, with a die-cast body, working treads, and decals.
>>152784824IIRC, Tonka bought out Kenner, but ended up with some debt. Then, Hasbro bought out Tonka some time later.
>>152784943
>>152784953Oh, ok.
>>152784852>>152784943>>152784959These are good redesigns. Much more robotic and menacing, like Decepticons.
>>152784804I had that gray and red Zeeman lookalike and my brother had Leader-1. I can't remember if we got any other GoBots toys besides those two, but we did get a GoBots coloring book. Sadly, all three are long gone now.
>>152784970Honestly i have them from an Artstation artist, while >>152784824 is more a fanartist.

Gobots were ok. Show suffered from a lot of Johnny quest level writing and character designs. The car bots mostly sucked compared to the first few waves of transformers too. It wouldnt be until the combiner city toys that transformers would be as bad as gobots. Also, gobots could be sketchy. They were assembled with pins that were held in with friction. It wasnt uncommon for pins to pop out and your gobot just fall appart
>>152784935I heard Convertors, but I don't remember if I gotten any of those. I did get a Convertors lunch box, though.
>>152783793>>152784804good rule of thumb isMachine Robo/Go-bots- better small robots, much worse large robotsTransformers- better large robots, worse small robots. The Tonka original stuff for Go-bots is all pretty bad as a whole tho.
>>152785225>defeating MegatronNow you've gone too far, sir!
>>152785430They had a lunchbox?
>>152785444I dont think the smaller ones are bad.
>>152785444>good rule of thumb is>Machine Robo/Go-bots- better small robots, much worse large robots>Transformers- better large robots, worse small robots.>The Tonka original stuff for Go-bots is all pretty bad as a whole tho.course because of this and the fact that Machine Robo/Go-Bots leaned a lot heavier on the small guys, overall I'd say the original 80's Machine Robo/Go-Bots line holds up better than a lot of Transformers G1, at least when you set aside most of the Tonka(and other companies Tonka sublicensed doing Go-Bots merch to) made stuff, even if I do think there is a certain charm to some of the Tonka molds>>152785489>They had a lunchbox?it was the 80's, pretty much anything could get a lunchbox in those days
>>152785041That one's missing them, unfortunately.
>>152784865>>152784912The old 1984 comic is right here: https://readcomiconline.li/Comic/Go-BotsThere's also a 2018 one, I think?
>>152783371>>152783683They're human aliens. The semi recurring characters, The Last Engineer and The Master Renegade, are 2 pre gobots, though they do have cyborgnetics.
>>152783740>>152784068Vamp is a woman
>>152785955Wait, I'm confused, that link actually is the 2018 comics by Tom Scioli. The 1980s comics were tiny Sunday cartoon strips. >>152786083Yes, in the cartoon. In the original Japanese specs I believe Vamp was male.
>>152786114That explains why it's so grimdark and nasty.
>>152785186Nice stockings and garters and if that coloration scheme is consistent then nice... big uncovered breasts too, lol.
>>152783364>Did the show have any cute girls or humans at all?Yeah, some. The black girl A.J. was the main one.
>>152786142Jesus Chrysler.
>>152786446
>>152786493Gorey as hell.

>>152786990>thousand-yard stareWell, I'm fucking done with this comic. It was amazing, horrific, mind-bending and I think I hate it.
Is the Gobots movie any good?
>>152785955>>152786990>>152786742>>152786807I figured this comic was based when I first saw it in a previous GoBots thread, but damn it went harder than I thought it did.>>152786189This. >>152785643It just shows how optimistic they were that it becomes a big toy line.
>>152785725But the best pic for the tread build. And from what i saw while searching pics of Destroyer is that the tread material is very brittle over time.
>>152786073Ok, i didnt thought they are humanoid aliens. I didnt watched every episode and thought it was just aliens without any anatomy explained.
Surprised this thread is still alive. More GoBots fans here than I expected but sad there aren't any more shows to discuss. Then again, with He-Man coming back (again) and Transformers still being somewhat popular maybe GoBots will have a remake movie or YT show too.
>>152790100I like the novilty of those early and non-transformer robot toys. I watched more Transformer cartoons than Go-Bots. I remember the cartoon very vague.
>>152786742>>152786937These feel like there are panels missing.
>>152790946Ofc, these are just clippings, the whole comic is 5 issues long.
>>152790976No I mean>Turbo is facing towards Loco>Turbo gets hit by Loco as a train in the back>Turbo is facing towards Loco who is a robot again>Loco is a train again without being shown to transform>Turbo throws Loco, who is a robot out of nowhere again, into a device that wasn't even implied to be there in the previous pics that showed the room
>>152786937I love how this makes use of the Command Center having a very ominous De-materializer among other things like a deprogramming center..and cafeteria. The Go Bots command center is a mobile prison serving as judge, jury, and execution chamber.
>>152782742Did the Wendy's toy really get to walk right there next to the real gobots?
>>152791136The artist took every aspect of the GoBots toy and show lore and made it 10x more horrifying. I mean, some of it already was by implication. "Enemy Re-Programming Center" would have raised eyebrows even back in 1984.
>>152781961For a random 80s cartoon it did have some interesting scifi mythology to it. It was one of the fist times you had a fully built over planet like Coruscant. And just like Coruscant it had 20+ levels with the bottom ones being more of a myth that no one had any idea what was down there any longer. Most believed there was nothing alive below level 7. Unlike Transformers, the gobots were not in any major decline, they had a massive population and both Renegades and Guardians huge fleets of ships. Renegades had a 5 mile long super ship with a cloaking device that could only be detected by the gravity it was forming out of its size.Gobots had regular dealings with lots of different aliens including aliens from other dimensions. Earth was not that unique to them at all.
>>152791136Prisons have a cafetaria or lunch space too.
>>152792181
>>152790946>>152791068Tom Scioli has a bit of a philosophy with his comics where it's often meant to come across as what would happen if you were to transliterate a kid playing with their toys directly into comic form, which probably contributes to some of the apparent "jumpiness" that sometimes happens but also results in some wonderful weirdness
>>152792965That's right, it has that stilted stop-motion look which - alongside the old colored-pencil sketch look - gives it a weird spoopy vibe. That and him mashing so many different toy lines together makes it look like a fever dream.
>>152783740Pretty sure Vamp and Crasher were the only two Go-Bots I ever had.
I like Go Bots, its fun
>>152793575>gives it a weird spoopy vibethat it definitely does have at times
>>152794366
>>152794379
>>152794391>>152794366>>152794379These kinda remind me of Bayformers in a good way. Now I suddenly want a Cy-Kill toy that turns into this. Imagine the fights he and the reimagined Leader-1 can have with both having aircraft forms. Also, one cool thing about Tux/Stretch is that he turns into a limo and his robot form has a top hat. It gives him a dignified look that also lets him stand out amongst other GoBots.

>>152784865Scioli's IDW Go-Bots series
>>152795228I understood it that way, that the artist wanted a “what if movie“ design.I always found it weird and interesting that the evil leader is a chooper. But Megatron transformed into a gun.Pic looks like something similar but with an Erektor crane meme.
>>152796116Wow, I've never seen a bigger crane erection!
