Looking at the credits for the first issue is a bit sad.
This issue has all the original people behind the whole idea working on it - Gnone, Canepa, Barbucci and to lesser degree, Artibani.
Gnone will not write past issue 2, and Canepa and Barbucci will only stay on for art for a while. Those three were the ones who had a disagreement with Disnay about the direction of the comic.
Even Damiani and Soffritti are only there for the first Arc, I believe.
Artibani and Cagol are the only ones mentioned who will be staying longer. Artibani is basically the main plotter for the series until he steps down at Arc 4, leaving to help create Winx.
Cagol will be a true mainstay, all the way until the final issue (#139)

>In 2001, W.I.T.C.H. sold more than 6 million copies in the first year of its publication, making it the most successful tween magazine launch ever
>In 2004, The Walt Disney Company announced that the W.I.T.C.H. comic book series was available in more than 60 countries, with more than 1 million copies of the comic book series being sold every month.
>In 2005, the comic book series had been released in over 65 countries.
>100 000 copies sold monthly in France & Germany. 200 000 copies in Italy

>Disney retained the rights to the W.I.T.C.H. comic over its creators primarily through the application of "work for hire" principles within Italian and European copyright law, coupled with specific contractual agreements
>Under UK and EU law, while the author is typically the first owner, this does not apply to works created by an employee during the course of their employment. In the case of W.I.T.C.H., the creators were commissioned by Disney to produce the work (or maybe it was that they only created 9 issues and Disney ordered 3 more and then the following were commission work), making Disney the employer and, therefore, the first owner of the copyright.

And that's the end of issue 2.
This is also the end of the original team's take on Elyon. From here on it is at first Artibani's Elyon(likely trying to stay closer to the original) until around issue 7, when Disney's pressure really comes in hard.

Compared to how Issue 1 had mostly people that didn't stick around, it is nice to be able to say that both new people on Issue 2 - Razzi and Zanotta, would end up staying for the entire 11½ year run.
Sadly, Gnone, the main author of the concept of WITCH leaves permanently here, leaving the main plotter role to her collaborator Artibani.
Gnone would go on to write a book series called Fairy Oak.

Working conditions I'd wager, the big boys who hadn't really have anything to do with the product now wants some say now that the product is popular. From some Italian interviews:
>Artibani: [on Disney's issues with attracting new readers for comics] "Perhaps the first priority would be to find common ground with the authors themselves, giving them the conditions to do their work properly"

>[Do you think it's possible to make marketing and imagination, passion and finance, coexist?]
>"In my view this is possible, on the condition that marketing experts don't start playing creative director. The success of Witch went to a lot of people's heads, especially those who had little faith in the project to begin with or jumped on the bandwagon once it was already rolling. Witch wasn't born as a marketing product — it grew out of the passion of a group of authors and transformed into a very popular series. If marketing applied to comics were an exact science, Disney would have the means to produce one international hit per year; the facts, evidently, tell us that's not how things work — though there's nothing wrong with that, to be clear: the alternative would be inhuman."

>>152803413
I don't see it happening, Disney will want to keep the rights for W.I.T.C.H, but they consider it a dead ip not worth doing anything with, other than keeping a stranglehold on the copyright.

>We need to attract the male demographic, this can't just be a girly show

Much like how the first comic arc gets messed up because of execs, the cartoon was also subject to that.
They would go back and forth on whether they should order it to be more slice of life or more action, making it a mess for the poor guys trying to make a show.

identity crisis and stuff like that for teenagers was actually one of Artibani's challenges when it came to W.I.T.C.H in the interview >>152803530
>"The Witch girls are certainly harder to work with because they are young girls bound by a set of constraints, the first and most cumbersome of which is time, frozen in an eternal cycle — Groundhog Day-style. Suspended in a world where the seasons change but the years don't pass, the Witch characters now risk becoming unreal in the eyes of their readers who, unlike them, do grow up and change. In the stories of the five Witch girls there is also romantic love, which never touches on sexuality; this creates a "I want to but I can't" atmosphere in the plots that prevents the stories from addressing themes that are crucial during adolescence, such as changes in one's own body. Despite everything, and despite appearances, Witch remains in my view a bold subject matter. Death — one of the hardest Disney taboos to shake — has been touched on extensively here: I'll take credit for burying Hay Lin's grandmother and "
I see some hints at what they wanted to do with Artibanis comments in mind.

>Copyright expires. Copyrights generally lasts for 95 years. Since the W.I.T.C.H. is from 2001, the copyright won't expire until the late 2090s
>Disney would need to decide that the W.I.T.C.H. IP is no longer financially viable, and choose to sell the rights. Disney recently rebooted the comic (which were maybe abandoned again?), so they might actually consider it a "sleeping" asset rather than a dead one
>Legal Invalidation. But the original creators already failed in their lawsuit and appear to give up and move on to other things.

Interestingly, there's a much later Magazine that gives information on the the WITCHes... but it outright clashes with with canon in some key ways.
It claims Cornelia is born May 10th 1990 and Will is born January 1st 1991.
Irma in March 10th 1991
Taranee March 23rd 1991
And Hay Lin in June 4th 1992
The problem with these numbers is that Hay Lin would be a class below the others if this was true, Will would be in the same class as Taranee and Irma, and Cornelia would be class above.
Logically, either Will is born in 1990 and Hay Lin in 1991
or
Cornelia is born in 1991 and Taranee and Irma in 1992.

What are you guys' thoughts on the comic?

Whats the reason for people always putting Taranee dead last in rankings other than the obvious reason for me Irma and Hay Lin are way worse. Irma is more often than not trying too hard when it comes to being funny, and not in the Chandler Bing way, but to the point where it becomes an annoying trait.
Hay Lin, meanwhile, have pretty much nothing going for her than being the ditzy one, she's the Phoebe of W.I.T.C.H to keep with the Friends analogy.
>>
>>152803074
Sounds about right.
They made a deal with the devil for a guaranteed paycheque.
>>
>>152809881
Probably because Taranee seems to be the most meek and uninteresting of the bunch so far. Irma is hot (and a bit of a slut) and for better or worse does stand out, Hay Lin has her grandma thing pushing her character and she seems to have some depth and stuff going on.
>>
>>152809604
The comic overall?
To be honest, I think it's pretty flawed. Spends too much time on lacklustre teenage drama and not enough on the fantasy stuff. The pacing is all over the place.
Sure, I'm not exactly the target demographic (never has been, on the account of my penis) but I did enjoy the TV series. Sure, that still had teenage drama but it gave the fantasy stuff more room to breathe.

Why didn't Cedric kill Will in the first two days?
>>
>>152805949
It's anachronistic.
>>
>>152812670
There wouldn't be a story otherwise.
>>

No, there's an edition where some panels are removed

Having a Disco in comic made in 2005 would be like having a movie theater in a comic set in the old west.

>>
>>152801683
Is Will's family loaded? Cellphones were not cheap in those times. Man how I wish I could go back to the pre cellphones era

Yeah probably, particularly Will who seems quite lacking in confidence.
>teen years
I was a nerd back then but a popular one. Who would I have the easiest time with?

It is perhaps about over-reinterpreting the scene between the lines; that is, per se in the comic it's only a kiss, But in similar circumstances, the boy would not limit himself to just that, but as mentioned, it is an over-interpretation.

I agree, I would love a fic about such a crossover. I wish there was a return to w.i.t.c.h. and Invader Zim
>>
>>152827158
I think both are big and I mean we've got 3 w.i.t.c.h threads right now so prime time. Maybe in main one pitch a idea or start a soft green we've got to be change we want to see

Dunno but given that he doesn't intend to continue it, they should get George R. R. Martin to write a w.i.t.c.h. remake. He's the only one skilled enough to make it work.

Canepa's interview answers a fair bit:
>Was the story you had in mind for WITCH different from the one we read in the issues after you left?
>Canepa: Yes, it was darker, more introspective, complex. A slice of adolescent life presented through five very different girls.
>The plot had different levels of interpretation, with ecological implications as well.
>It was certainly closer to manga in terms of themes: there was more attention to the girls' personal lives, to the torments of adolescence. There was no clear division between good and evil: the girls would have been attracted to the Metaworld and pushed to be part of it, passing
>to the other side of the fence. Elyon would have been the first to give in, but they would all have done so to some extent, even going so far as to fight against themselves.

I thought he was a hack and everybody hated him.

Pic related was the plan for Elyon.
She wasn't the princess but instead the guardian of Metamoor, with powers over death and time.
>>
>>152828865
Honestly why did they make elyon so stacked
>Time
>Death
>Wilderness

I see why people talked about fae vibe elyon, though question is would she have been at the school in this version or a pre existing guardian

Will looks super cute not gonna lie

This is actually pretty dangerous and people being stupid in exactly this way gets a whole lot of them killed and maimed. Hard to tell if this is getting that across enough.
>>
>>152828300
I don't think it would. They wrote a 9 issue story and Disney asked for 3 more issues. and then left after that.
Artibani's interview makes it clear >>152803815
>>"The Witch girls are certainly harder to work with because they are young girls bound by a set of constraints, the first and most cumbersome of which is time, frozen in an eternal cycle — Groundhog Day-style. Suspended in a world where the seasons change but the years don't pass, the Witch characters now risk becoming unreal in the eyes of their readers who, unlike them, do grow up and change."
>>
>>152803056
wonder what happened to that frog anyhoo

did he get a job at the WB?
>>
>>152802192
It's to simulate the traditional little girl activity of playing dress up. They also tend to be less naked, as it were, in the recent iterations of such things. The ones actually for little girl consumption, anyway.

I should see if anyone's done a real serious bit of writing on it, cause it's interesting to compare how this is portrayed between your classic magical girls, including their modern successors, and the other more modern, male otaku oriented niche series like Fate and Symphogear. Not just the way there's more of a mecha perspective, but the, for lack of a better word, difference in how a guy wants to see a girl put on a girl outfit and how a girl wants to see themselves put it on.

Oops, forgot to mention:

One thing is, apparently, little girls fucking love putting things in little bags. Can't get enough of it.
