Sonic can be a smarmy dickhead who just wants a good time and also abide a moral code that compels him to kick Robotnik in the nuts. He does tend to moralize in the comics, but that seems to be a byproduct of comics "needing" pages where the hero looks directly at the audience and tells them what they think and feel. Sonic is more about showing rather than telling but this is format problem, not necessarily a writing problem. Well, it is a writing problem, but you get what I mean.Shadow has been characterized in plenty of games as preoccupied with asserting his own strength. Part of keeping Maria's Promise is always being the strongest guy in the room; per Shadow's personality, he does not trust others to have the strength to do what is necessary. This creates an interesting paradox of Shadow mistrusting human beings for doing awful things and rationalizing it, while Shadow also does detestable things (such as fight allies) and rationalizes it. It is completely in-character for Shadow to actually want to save humanity from itself but this drives him to be overbearing and outright challenge others. Just because he does not say "Maria" in every line does not mean his core motivation is missing.He's completely wrong about Silver. Silver in his own game was an impetuous childish moron and overall poor character, he existed to move the plot forward and did so with all the grace of a shopping cart rattling down a steep hill. The comics have tried to make him into an actual character with varying results. Silver's problem is he never should have existed or simply died in Sonic '06. Since that didn't happen the best he can do is be transformed into a bishie by the fanbase, who also does not understand what he's supposed to be.
