Welcome. Let this be the finale of /succ/. Steven Universe. Season 5. We're counting every cry. There's a possibility I do the movie and Future and the Lars spinoff but this was already exhausting and I think I've earned a break.>Previous Threadshttps://desuarchive.org/co/thread/152569466https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/152472164https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/152671382https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/152732980>Stuck Together>Aquamarine: Look, I'm so moved I'm crying. *laughs* Just kidding, that's my gem!Lars cries after getting crushed by Topaz's massive ass. Lars cries again after a heart-to-heart with Steven, confessing his wussiness. Steven cries because he's happy he's not alone. Lars cries again in solidarity. And finally, Topaz cries because she's moved by the whole thing. Shit, so this is what it's like when Lars actually tries. I didn't think he'd make bronze but he's proving me wrong.
Finally.
>The TrialBlue uses her cry powers in a moment of fury. Yellow Diamond, Yellow Pearl, Blue Pearl, Blue Zircon, and Steven are affected. Weirdly Yellow Zircon seems to be immune, that might be a dig at lawyers. We don't see a tear from Blue but she's clearly covering her face and weeping so she gets a point too. I will reluctantly put the Pearls on the board because they're recurring characters but I'm pretty sure this is Blue Zircon's only appearance so she gets an honorable mention.>>152803220Appreciate the bump, friend.
>Off ColorsLars cries after Steven tells him it's okay to be afraid. Steven cries after Lars dies. This also confirms he has healing tears like his mom so if he ever cries and someone doesn't get healed it's a plothole. Maybe it'd ruin the dramatic tension if he licked Lars' corpse. It's your own fault for giving Steven a wacky joke power.
>>152803593Maybe he sprayed some spit on him when he was crying like a little BABY
>Lars' HeadOddly this is the first time an episode has begun mid-cry from the previous episode. I guess I'll still count it as a unique cry for this episode too. Steven cries a little more afterward (seemingly from stress rather than Lars' death). Steven also cries after fixing himself a PB&J. Pearl and Greg cry when Steven returns.>>152803664I might've bought that if they didn't do a close up on the tear falling on Lars. Real pokemon shit.
cry hard the hunter
>Dewey WinsSadie cries after Steven tells her about Lars. I'm pretty sure it's because it's implied that he's chasing some hot gem tail. Sadie cries again at Dewey's indifference towards Lars. Lars' mom cries too. Lars' parents both cry after Nanefua's speech. I'm giving Lars' parents an honorable mention. They're technically recurring characters but they don't even have a speaking role here.>>152803808I appreciate how this show tries to include a broad spectrum of music. Not necessarily in the soundtrack but you have offhand comments like how Jenny's a metalhead.
Wait, we're already on S5? Damn, good for staying in it, Cryanon
>GemcationSteven cries over Connie not texting him back. Yeah, even if this weren't the final season this drama is weak as hell.>>152804029Yes, it's been a month since the original thread. Time flies when you're crying, eh? Spinel would know. Now you've got me thinking about the movie...
>Raising the BarnSteven cries as Lapis is about to leave. Peridot cries too. As an anon said last thread, Lapis is too broken to cry.
Is there really this much crying in Steven universe? I don’t watch dogshit. Doesn’t it become meaningless after a few times?
>Back to the KindergartenIt was a strong start but no cries here. We had a pretty good crystreak going too. Let's not lose momentum.>>152804220We're rapidly approaching 200 cries so you tell me. Most of them are from Steven who just cries a lot as a personality trait and the show's self-aware enough that you're not supposed to take all of them seriously. The "serious cries" are less numerous but probably still more than your average show. It's a dramatic show, for better or worse.
Are you gonna pick it back up with a lars of the stars cry count too?
>Sadie KillerNo cries here either but I like this one too. Pretty good for a townie episode. Maybe it's because I can relate as a fellow wagie.>>152804456I'm not sure. I don't have plans to do the movie or Future anytime soon because I want my damn weekends back. If LotS gets released weekly or in a bomb format I'd be happy to show up in weekly talkback threads. In the more likely event that it's binge dropped I might just post the stats and dip rather than doing the episode breakdowns. Frankly I'm not all that interested in LotS. I expect there to be less crying in that series too even though Lars is one of our strongest criers.
>>152804494more like Sadie filler
>Kevin Party>Kevin: Huh, your name is Steven? Weird. I thought it was Clarence.Steven cries as he's about to confront Connie about how she's been ghosting him. It's a good long one too. Steven cries after apologizing to Connie and Connie cries back. This show weirdly doesn't have good cry continuity with people crying then not crying then crying again. I know that actually happens but still. Connie stops crying then brushes away a tear after learning that Kevin had his heart broken. This could be a laugh cry or residual from before but I will tentatively award Connie an extra point. Thus ends the most worthless arc of the entire show. Connie is somewhat justified in being mad at Steven but it's far too late for this weak preteen angst.>>152804595Hey now, it was good filler.
>Lars of the StarsSpeaking of... Lars cries after learning Sadie is hanging out with the cool kids. He cries for 30 seconds straight. He cries again shortly after at the idea that he'd do this to hurt Sadie - counting that as a second cry. I'm sorry I ever doubted you Lars. At this point you're a shoo-in for bronze and you deserve your own series as supreme crier without that pesky Steven lurking around.
>Jungle MoonI like how this episode disguises its foreshadowing by Stevonnie saying they're having a "diamond dream again" when Steven dreaming about Blue is due to her cry powers and this one is Pink's memories leaking through. It's also a nice excuse to sneak in some diamond lore. No crying.
So the memes about this being the crying show were all correct, I see. Hilarious.
Someone should have really told Sugar that crying only works in short doses or everyone will think the characters are annoying
>Your Mother and MineGarnet has some kind of fetish for disabled gems. At this point I'm surprised we've never seen Rose cry though they've propped her up as a hero so they probably don't want her to seem weak. That being said she has canon cry powers so I'm surprised we didn't see any flashback of her healing a gem or anything. Another episode with zero cries, I'm getting nervous.>>152805199I don't follow the creators that closely but I'm not sure if Sugar's ever commented on the crying.
>The Big ShowKate Micucci is not a good singer. I know she's in an actual band but I think it's like a joke band. Sadie Killer and the Suspects is also kind of a novelty band so it's fitting.
OP, off the top of your head; what was the best and worst cries of SU?
>Pool HoppingThis one's ambiguous because of Garnet's visor but I'm pretty sure she cries when she's freaking out about not being able to predict the future. I might be biased because I want to break this dry streak. Interestingly this ties Garnet with Amethyst - I thought Amy would cry more than Garnet but maybe not.>>152805558I give out a best cry award every season. I think best cry overall is still Pearl's cry in So Many Birthdays. She goes on for over a minute and it might be the show's best effort at combining comedy and tragedy. I don't have a worst cry, the worst cry is just a forgettable one-frame cry that's barely there like that one from the S4 finale.
>Letters to LarsSettle down, we've only had two episodes without him. Ronaldo cries from laughter at the idea of Lars being in space. Ronaldo cries again shortly after because he wasn't abducted. Maybe I overestimated Dewey after Ocean Gem but I'm disappointed he didn't cry at all when he spent the whole episode moping around.
>Can't Go BackThis is a decent character piece for Lapis even if I still think her arc is half-baked. You could rationalize the other diamond dream as a flashback since that also took place on the jungle moon but I don't know why he'd be flashing back to Pearl attacking Pink specifically. She doesn't do that on the moon so it just comes off as a contrived reason to give Steven information to kick the plot forward. I guess if I rewrote it I would've made Steven more curious after the events of The Trial and have Garnet say something in her flashback episode that doesn't line up. They've sort of been trying to characterize Steven as someone who's inquisitive but it comes off more like the gems being secretive and Steven being fed up with being babied. Steven just sits there until the plot happens to him, literally in this case.Anyways as you've come to expect if I'm criticizing the episode it means there's no crying.
>A Single Pale RoseThe Pearl inside Pearl inside Pearl's pearl cries at Rose having a baby. This still counts as a cry for Pearl, mostly because this is practically a flashback. The Pearl two layers deeper cries after fake shattering Pink. And finally the real Pearl cries after Steven learns her secret.
>>152803163fucking hells bells you have some patience to document this. did you get a crychart yet?
Taking a break now, I might continue tomorrow. This season is extra-long so I don't wanna be up all night. Also A Single Pale Rose feels like a midseason finale of sorts.>>152806445I made a spreadsheet that I post after the end of each season, I'm starting to think I should've posted one in the thread instead of just linking to previous threads.
>>152806543please do, i enjoy seeing the charts.
Thank you for your service OP, it's been fun reading these threads and re-living my memories with this show.>>152804913This is when I stopped watching the show, I could take a lot of shit but Lars becoming a pink zombie Captain Harlock ripoff was where I drew the line.
>>152806543Steven is a beast. A crying beast.
>>152804494Lol wild pic to see out of context
Oh, and here's a teaser for S5 so far because you all like stats so much. I think someone last week wanted a pie chart.>>152806920Lol, fair enough. The show is just as goofy as it is serious and obviously someone liked it if this is getting its own spinoff. I'm not expecting much from it either.
Bumping for OP
>>152808210>no Jasper to be found Based Jasper
Please consider doing the movie and Future after a deserved break. It just wouldn’t feel complete otherwise.>>152804913jesus Lars, these threads have completely changed how I view him
>>152809860I mean, he was always crying a lot
Good morning. This ends today.>Now We're Only Falling ApartAfter Rose's secret gets out Garnet cries and unfuses. Sapphire continues that train of thought and cries as well, feeling personally betrayed for never looking at Rose's future (which now that I think about it is an invasion of privacy.) Ruby cries because Sapphire is upset. For the record, Sapphire's cry is the 200th cry of the show. Who could've seen that coming?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcOxhH8N3Bo
>What's Your Problem?Sapphire cries after Ruby runs away. Pearl cries at the thought of Garnet being gone forever. Steven cries after helicopter Amethyst crashes into a water tower due to the speed of their descent. Frankly it was a tough choice between this and Pearl and Sapphire crying while hugging for the screencap.
>The QuestionNo cries in this one. Honorable mention to Dolphin Tail.
>>152811740Can dolphins even cry IRL?
>Made of HonorSteven gets choked up instantly while wedding planning. Bismuth cries after realizing her friends were corrupted. Bismuth cries again due to shame after attacking Steven and realizing nobody unbubbled her. Pearl, Ruby, and Sapphire cry after Bismuth reveals herself to the CGs.As far as Season 5 goes Pearl is now tied with Lars for Silver. Things are heating up.>>152811892Apparently they produce eye mucus to keep their eyes wet when they're out of water but they don't cry. Maybe the dolphin cuck is just making eye mucus.
>ReunitedAnd it feels so good. Bismuth cries after Ruby and Sapphire's speeches. Steven cries due to Blue's powers, announcing the diamond arrival. The cluster forming and not destroying the earth even a little bit is a letdown. Forming a giant arm is also lame. It's a little funny watching it smack around the other arms but still.Blue cries while confronting Steven. With her powers she makes Alexandrite, Steven, Pearl, Garnet, Amethyst, Bismuth, and Peridot cry. Lapis smacks her with a barn and temporarily disables her powers but she reactivates them causing Lapis, Peridot, Steven, Garnet, Bismuth, Amethyst, and Connie for some reason to cry. Pearl doesn't cry here and I genuinely think this was an animation error. If she loses to Lars to an animation error I'm gonna flip out. But don't let this distract you from the fact that this is Lapis' first cry. And Alexandrite's first cry for that matter - did not expect her to cry with her limited screentime. After Yellow stomps on Steven he astral projects in a classic psychic ghost type situation. Connie cries at his unconscious body. Blue cries over Pink. When Steven regains consciousness Blue is still crying, presumably upon realizing who he is so I'm counting that as a different cry.Obviously this was an absolute sobberknocker of an episode. Frankly I'm surprised more people didn't cry during the wedding. This was Blue at peak performance. I had to tally things up and recount several times just to make sure I didn't miss anything. There were a grand total of 20 cries this episode, including 2 debuts. Even for a double-header this blew the previous record out of the water. Phew! They're making me work for this one. We're in the home stretch now.For those curious, here are the tallies for this episode:>Bismuth: III>Steven: III>Blue: III>Garnet: II>Amethyst: II>Peridot: II>Connie: II>Lapis: I>Alexandrite: I>Pearl: I
>Legs from Here to HomeworldBlue, in tears, is relieved that Pink was never shattered and is still using her crying powers, perhaps unintentionally? Steven, Garnet, Bismuth, Amethyst, Pearl, and Yellow are affected. I'm still not 100% sure whether Blue herself has to cry to use her crying powers but it seems like that's the case. I don't want to retroactively award Blue offscreen cries because of this. Seems like a tedious power unless she's really good at crying on command. Nephrite cries after Yellow and Blue temporarily uncorrupt her, likely due to PTSD. Blue cries from nostalgia after they enter Pink's legs. This causes Steven and Yellow to cry. Presumably the other CGs are affected too but it's offscreen so I'm not counting it.
>>152809415She's too based for crybabies
>>152806920Hope you enjoy them banking the entire SU revival on that spin-off idea! If it even comes out at this point.
>>1528049138 years ago when this episode aired I took a friend out to eat just to talk about how bad it was with him. There were so many ways you could make Lars having a breakdown in space work but they somehow didn't go with the obvious answer of "I'm fighting a space anomaly that has more intellect and experience than me, what the fuck do I do I worked at a donut shop up until now"I'm now a believe that Sadie OR Lars should've been a character, but not both. Both is not necessary to tell the story of human and gem contact.
>FamiliarWhile chatting in the sauna Yellow does a gesture like she's wiping a tear from her eye but we don't actually see it. I'm not counting that. Blue cries while remembering the beginning of Era 2 which also causes Steven to cry. Steven either cries or sweats while singing which produces a pebble. It could be sweat to mimic the sauna from earlier but I think it'd make more sense for him to cry in this moment so I'm counting it. I think the diamonds can produce life using any of their secretions (like Steven's spit) so that doesn't narrow it down. One of the pebbles also cries after hurting its hand so that's an honorable mention. Also fuck this site for gouging me for CAPTCHAs and e-mail verifications. This is why storytimes are going extinct.>>152812999Lars and Sadie are two of the better and more fleshed-out townies, I don't mind them. I like the idea of Lars coming out of his shell by becoming a gem leader but he does it way too effortlessly for it to be believable. They could've at least made a joke like "oh, i watched a lot of star trek" or something. Making his cry a joke cry that morphs into a serious cry was a weird decision. I think if they made an episode early on where Sadie actually tries to make friends to mirror Lars it would help both their stories a lot.
>Together AloneSteven cries after Garnet refuses to go to his party. Blue causes this random green gem to cry with her presence which is an honorable mention. This also confirms that Blue doesn't need to cry in order to make others cry.
>EscapismSteven cries while possessing a melon body (somehow) which still counts as a cry for Steven. His tears cause the watermelon factions to stop fighting and cooperate on building a boat. Gee, who knew ending wars was so easy?
>>152806543lmao this work is amazing, thank you
>>152812248holy shit what a tally for a single episodeI don’t care how dramatic the stakes are, let this be a lesson to creators that anything overdosing on emotion and removing subtlety to this extent is going to backfire and feel completely ridiculous instead. If you never hold back strategically and earn your moments, they’re never going to feel like moments. Or perhaps they never explained that Beach City just has the highest concentration of allergens in the world.
>>152813702That's the episode where they deal with someone that has the power to force others to feel depressed and cry on command.Characters in this show sob way too much, but that's the one scenario that actually makes it cool and work naturally.
>Change Your MindSteven cries in the form of Pink after Blue scolds him in his dream. I said before that dream cries don't count but Steven is also special because of his weird dream powers. This is probably a flashback to an actual time that Pink cried so I will give this one to Pink even though it's a massive gray area. Shockingly this is also the first time Pink or Rose have cried in the entire series and it has an asterisk. It's implied that Rose cried a lot due to her healing tears but we've never actually seen it onscreen. Blue cries because Steven doesn't apologize for (from her perspective) what is tantamount to fucking a dog in front of everyone. Her powers make Steven cry. Blue cries again after realizing how she abused Pink. This causes Steven to cry again - or maybe that's residual from her previous cry power, I don't fucking know. I'm counting that as another cry for Steven. Blue hits Yellow with a hadouken which causes her to cry. Yellow cries again after Steven tells her about the hot dogs.>Yellow: Stop... stop it Blue. Stop using your power on me.>Comment too longDammit. Fitting for this quadruple-length episode.>>152813668You're welcome.>>152813702I'd think the gems would be immune to such allergens.>>152814018I like Blue's powers but much like the rest of the show they feel underdeveloped and unexplored. The gems don't actually "feel depressed", they're just forced to cry. Steven says as much in Change Your Mind. If they actually became depressed and lost the will to fight it'd be interesting, or maybe if they hurt Blue enough to make her cry it'd be a cool defensive weapon. As it is, Blue just happens to cry a lot (not to say it's completely unjustified but still) and disables gems by forcing them to cry a lot. That's it.
>>152814122>Change Your Mind (Part 2)Steven cries after White discovers them and the CGs are still in their gems. Steven cries again after he drops the gems and they're hurtling to their deaths. Also I'm pretty sure fusing with a gem while they lack a physical form is nonconsensual but I bet the writers have some half-assed explanation like "oh, fusion wouldn't even work if they didn't want it at all!" Steven cries once more while trying to get Ruby and Sapphire to come out of their gems. For the record I think Rainbow 2.0 and Sunstone are funny.Steven cries after White turns the CGs into puppets. Steven cries again after White mind manipulates him into thinking he's Pink. Steven and Connie both cry as White rips his gem out. Gemless Steven cries possibly out of weakness or because of Pink Steven's big shout. "No! Stop! You're hurting them!" counts as another cry for Steven, likely out of empathy for the puppets after Pink Steven deflects White's blasts. Gemless Steven cries out of joy as he fuses with Pink Steven, ending with regular Steven crying. It's actually really hard to tell if Pink Steven cries prior because they're glowing and twirling around but I won't give him one. I know I said fusions get unique cries but all of gemless Steven's cries are obviously going to Steven. I mean, c'mon. Connie cries after Steven's fusion. Also I know the finale gets a lot of flack but I really like this scene, tears and all. A little James Baxter never hurts.During the ending montage where they uncorrupt the gems two nephrites cry (but not "our" Nephrite) so they get an honorable mention. Pearl and Garnet cry too. That's it. That's the end! FINAL STATS COMING SOON.
well done OP, you've reached the finale!bumping to keep this amazing thread alive
>>152804377The self-awareness was cute back in season 1 with the Crying Breakfast Friends, but that really can only go so far four-five seasons in.
>>152815136>The self-awareness was cuteNo it wasnt, it was the show runners pointing a finger at one of many problems with the show as a joke and doing nothing about it.
>(1/3)Well. This has been quite an emotional rollercoaster. We laughed, we cried, we cried of laughter. Season 5 is jam-fucking-packed with crying. After Seasons 3 and 4 I wasn't expecting much but this season knocked it out of the park. I still can't believe this season had over 100 cries, clearly in no small part to Blue and her ridiculous powers. The cry percentage is a solid 75%, second highest after Season 1B and bringing up our total cry percentage to a (nice) 69%. That means you should expect to see crying in about 7 in every 10 Steven Universe episodes. The cry density is fucking 3.68. Every other season had a cry density from 1-1.5. Again, thanks Blue. Oddly this Season had two unique crystreaks of 7 but it never got higher than that so the best overall crystreak of 13 connecting 1A and 1B was never broken. The cry diversity also skyrocketed to 22. Makes sense with lots of characters returning in the final season.Steven gets gold with 33 goddamn cries. He's gotten gold every season but he finished strong. I actually didn't think he was gonna make it but Steven got past the big hundo with 101 cries throughout the whole series. If you exclude the pilot it's exactly 100 which is pretty funny. Steven also cried more in Season 1 than any other character has through the whole series. It was never close. Steven is our champion, our golden god. 50% human, 50% gem, 100% crybaby.Pearl and Blue are tied for Silver for Season 5. Pearl was always a strong contender and wins Silver overall so it's not surprising to see her up here. She may not cry as much as Steven but she makes her cries count (and still cries more than anyone else.) Newcomer Blue has proven that she can dish it out and she can take it. While being the ultimate supporter and helping everyone else cry she has proven that she's a force in her own right.
>>152814122>>152814142White should have just shattered Steven's gem and turned his human remains into gem life energy.
>>152815409>(2/3)Pearl and Blue are tied for Silver for Season 5. It's a four-way tie for Bronze for Season 5 between Lars, Connie, Garnet, and Bismuth. Lars started off strong in Season 1 then fell off the face of the earth. He made a rallying comeback and earned bronze overall though the race was tight, beating the next person by a mere 2 cries. Connie has been a solid crier but never a top contender though she made bronze in Season 2. Still, her efforts are rewarded with fourth place overall which is at least a consolation prize. Her parents must be furious. I'm surprised with Garnet and Bismuth, neither seem like criers but they really showed up. Bismuth got bronze in Season 3 but there wasn't much competition.Other people of note... I'm surprised Amethyst didn't end up crying much, only 9 times. All her cries this season were from Blue's powers too. I guess she really is the most mature gem. Greg is also tied with her at 9, crying a decent amount but nothing crazy. Lapis finally managed to cry this season which means the only major characters to not cry throughout the entire show are Jasper and White. White is excusable since she only showed up at the very end. As people have said throughout multiple threads, Jasper is simply not a crier. She gets watery eyes in Stevonnie's flashback but they might be looking back through tear-tinted glasses. Also Pink got really fucking close to not crying, barely making it in.Also I looked briefly for special homeworld credits and couldn't find any.>>152815438Ugh, the Jesus symbolism is already too much.
>>152815484>(3/3)While I'm tempted to give best cry to one of Blue's powercries I gotta give it to Steven's final cry in Change Your Mind. Not only is he crying pre and post fusion but it's a cathartic cry built up by 10 other cries throughout the episode. I already admitted that I like this scene so I'm biased but there's nothing stronger than the cry of self-acceptance. Overall I still might have to echo my previous post and give it to Pearl from So Many Birthdays. It's that fucking good. I dunno, it's close.Believe it or not the episode with the most cries is actually the finale, barely beating Reunited by 1 with a total of 21 cries. Steven barely got 100+ cries because he cried a whopping 12 times this episode, which is also the most cries from a single character in an episode. Obviously this episode is quadruple length but it's still very impressive. Most memorable honorable mention? It's Pizza Steve's cry in Say Uncle. Somehow I forgot that episode had 7 actual cries but I remembered this one. Pizza Steve is an icon. I hate to put it above the zoomans but who the fuck cares about the zoomans?I added a pie chart (after all it is 3/14) of overall cries and excluded anyone with less than 5 cries because it made the whole thing ugly. I didn't get to pick the colors so don't complain about that. I also busted out the tablet and drew some little doodles. I'm rusty.Someone brought up the idea of doing a stat for cries over episode appearances since that might give Pearl an edge but I'm just too lazy for that. I already said I have no plans to do the movie or Future or LotS but that doesn't mean I'll never do it, just not next week. See you, space crybabies.
>>152815561Wonderful picture, thank you again for all your hard work.
>>152815561amazing work, great doodles
Oh yeah, I also forgot how pie charts worked. I'm not supposed to cut out the tiny data, I'm supposed to clump them together. So Steven ended up with 38% of all the cries through the show. Next is Pearl at 13% and it tapers off from there. Neat.>>152815610>>152815781No prob, bob. I had fun even if it ended up being more daunting than I initially realized.
>>152815409>Steven gets gold with 33 goddamn cries. This would be a good character trait if it fizzled out as he grew up, but it continues in Future.I recently rewatched Digimon Tamers which has a main character that cries A LOT in the first thirteen or so episodes, but as the series goes on he stops and it shows growth for him as a character. I wish SU did that with Steven, but for some reason Future treats him like the most raped man alive.
>>152815980I was about to post this exact thing. Would've been cool to have him cry less and less over time, with season 5 culiminating with him having this big ugly cry at the finale as the only time that season. That would've made the finale feel so much more emotional and earned, as it's him crying with purpose.Personally though I would've liked Future to have never happened in the first place. That show only exists to take any goodwill the original had left and squash it entirely.
