Is Xavier just too hard for ESLs?
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand some parts of Xavier. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Political History/Philosophy most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. If you didn't know about conspiracies about the US government creating AIDS and Crack (or the fact that the US funded Bin Laden and similar groups during the Soviet Afghan war) you wouldn't understand the "disease you made" joke in "what doth life"

>>152804930I don't think it's about language. Xavier has plenty of wordplay but it's not at such a high level that you can't understand it as an ESL. The more difficult part is when they're working obscure cultural and historical references into his rants.
>>152804930Probably depends on the level of ESL. I imagine a joke like "Full Monty... ZUMA!" would completely go over the heads of someone with a looser grasp of English, but other jokes like "Look with your eyes, not with your mouth" shouldn't be too hard.
