You know, so much of Springfield makes sense once you know it was founded by pilgrims who wanted to make "New Sodom" being led by a literal pirate who wanted to go into hiding under a fake name, with the only reason that it wasn't bigger from the start being that said pirate did not approve of incest, leading half the pilgrims to start their own town just on the other side of the hill.
