Teen humor comics were a big deal after WWII, but nowadays Archie is all anyone knows because it was the only series to last past the 70s. Do you like old teen humor comics? Which ones are your favorites?
>>
I hope we get a DC Finest Humor book with things like Buzzy, and Scribbly, and A Date with Judy.

I can only assume by the 70s Archie was clearly dominating the genre, so everyone else tried to be more in line with Archie comics.

Having them all done by a former Archie artist of the Decarlo school was adding insult to injury though.

Honestly all these artists draw the girls the same way, even if they're style is different. Same face, same body, same personality. Ironically it's the girls that aren't considered hot that stand out the most. But they're "ugly" and therefore not the object of any guy's attention.

Goldberg and Scarpelli both worked on DC teen books. Goldberg had to have Sol Brodsky sign his Marvel work in 68 to 72 so DC and Archie wouldn't find out he was working for all three companies.

So what was it that made Archie last while all the other ones died? Looking through the thread we've established that a lot of Archie creators worked on these other books, so it can't be a creative team issue.
>>
>>152846891
Archie has the Ho Gs.
>>
>>152846891
The almost perfect love triangle. A guy that's popular with women and so horny he can't choose a girl to stick with and two polar opposite love interests that fight over him. The only thing it was missing was Betty and Veronica being into each other although they had plenty of comics together. Also Jughead is based.
>>
>>
This and Debbi's dates are about the only ones that aren't on RCO.
>>
>>
>>152846891
Most of these lasted for decades. It's just by the '60s and '70s the superhero books were so prominent for DC and Marvel that there was no real point in the teen humor books anymore whereas Archie was the opposite: nobody read or cared about their superhero stuff.

Also, truthfully, most of these aren't actually funny not even in a corny way. If you're a boy you're reading to look at cute girls and if you're girl you're reading for the outfits and maybe self-inserting as the heroine.
>>

This is such a deep layer of feminist-puritanical retardation that it reads like some sort of absurd farce, but this is the real opinion of real people who have the right to vote and even sometimes use it.

Some literal schizo right-wing lady called Archie-edits used Photoshop to make lots of Betty/Veronica edited covers and panels back in the day. The problem with a lot of these is that they really only work as pin-ups. The jokes are worth a sensible chuckle (until you've seen the 1000th variation of "Guy is horny at chick he's walking past") but the actual content of the comics isn't particularly funny or amusing or interesting. There's no real point to them beyond the cover.

Archie had the Betty and Veronica gimmick so it's easy to see why it eventually outlasted the others but I'm also damning with faint praise because it's a gimmick that gets old very quickly and, again, you're just left with a kind of dull comic otherwise. Cute girls are cute girls but that's really it and even THAT gets old when they're all just variations of the bog standard DeCarlo Girl with diferent hair and skin color.

I remember Archie tried a few off-beat comics in the late 80s-early 90s. That Dilton comic, Explorers of the Unknown, Jughead's Time Police, Archie's R/C Racers, Faculty Funnies, Archie 3000, a hip new rebooted Little Archie, etc. I don't think a single one of those lasted very long though.

Is the implication here supposed to be that Archie is such a shit guy that he's sub-1 and the computer breaks from contemplating his worthlessness, or that he's such an ideal match for Veronica that he blows out the top instead?

That's not true, Archie's appeal is only partly fanservice or one-liners, it also has comedic shenanigans and comfy nostalgia of either remembering being a teen or imagining yourself having the nice comfy teen years that these characters in an idyllic American town have.

Archie's success really changed the default artstyle for these kinds of comics, didn't it? Stuff from the early 50s all has more realistic art, but by the end of the 60s they are all going for the Archie style.

Windy and Willy was the Dobie Gillis knock-off. Showcase #81 was 2indy and Willy's debut, and it is just an edited version of Dobie Gillis #26. They changed the characters hair a little and recolor it, and called it a new comic.

Is anyone else familiar with Mazie and friends? As far as Archie clones go she might be one of the most underrated gals next to Jetta. Best way I can describe things is as if Betty were the face of the comic line instead of Archie, and the supporting cast got their own titles (except Veronica).

Jeanie is Mazie's equivalent of Veronica. Something I appreciate about her is the french accent. Does alot to make her stand out.

Jeanie's the gal with black hair. Mazie and friends managed to survive their original publisher too. You can read both her Nation-Wide and Harvey Comics exploits on Comicbookplus. As far as I can tell all of her appearances are public domain. I wish they had the foresight to make a Jeanie title instead of Mortie. Mortie sucks.

It was basically them flailing around to try and recapture their success of the late '70s to mid '80s.
