They'd plotted out that there'd be a major character death mid-event, but hadn't decided who it would be yet at the time Slott gave that interview, he revealed they'd been using Spider-Man's name as a placeholder just so they could move forward with plotting the rest of the event, and they'd come back and settled on who was really going to die later on. Slott told the interviewer something like "don't worry, it's not REALLY going to be Spider-Man that dies", and from this incident people got the impression that Bendis really was trying to kill Peter but Slott stopped him, which is just fiction.
