I'm still not sure I'm convinced he's truly alive. He was reanimated by magic, so the only way I could see him being "alive" is if the goo is equally magic in nature and slowly but gradually reversed the effect it had on his body. The witch doctor necromancy brought Spear into undeath, and it could be assumed that if he survived and accomplished his goal he would have undone the magic and Spear would go back to being dead, however him getting killed left Spear in a weird magicless state of undeath. The goop, from what little we see of it, seems to repair the body alongside the temporary mutation and violent behavior it's known for. It's probably safe to assume not too many necromancer zombies are given the goop, why would they? Zombies are generally disposable tools for most necromancers, no point in buffing something you probably aren't going to be using that long. What the goop did was probably see the undead state of spears body and treat it like any other damage and fixed it.
Never underestimate Gender's ability to screw everything up. Pretty much everything he does starts off good but it inevitably trainwrecks and goes to shit.
