I think one of the reasons Usagi works so well is that Usagi is not some modern person who thinks with a modern perspective but someone of a time and place, yet his common humanity shines through and frequently asks him to reconsider some of his strongly held opinions.

They're used to mistreatment so the thrill of finally having power makes them overcorrect. Also they tend to be drunk.

>routed the ogres of the eastern mountains
This is intredasting. I assume Stan just forgot that he wrote this, but I think it's the only implication we ever see of yokai of any kind just being generally accepted as existing, right? This pretty clearly states that the shogunate or at least Higashi province were at straight up war with the tengu at one point.

as you might be aware, Lone Wolf and Cub has a huge influence on Usagi, and I can't recommend you read it enough, it's really good. the movies are alright too, I think Baby Cart to Hades is the best one. can't say anything about the tv series, as I didn't watch it yet.

I feel like both of these are a stretch in a setting where yokai are known to exist. Worthy retcons in both cases, but hardly what makes sense as the intended meaning at the time; it seems more like a reference to Yoshitsune or somebody like that. (I can't remember who now, but I feel sure that one of those guys was attributed with campaigns of war against various goblins).

That said, of course I have to admit to an obvious mistake myself; "ogre" has never been the accepted translation of tengu AFAIK, so me mentioning tengu specifically was clearly a goof.

I think he's partially aware of the kind of trouble she could get into for hanging on to those especially given the suspicious way he died. He would never cut down an innocent but he's definitely not above a little intimidation if he thinks it'll avoid further trouble down the line. It's harsh, but not unfounded reasoning. And this is a harsh world, feudal Japan is.
>>
Reading through this mini story-arc about the woes of Lord Higashi's clan we can see the answer to anon's question from the last thread-
>>Ok, how did Shogun tard wrangle the daimyo then?
-in action in these stories.
>>152884729
General Oyaneko, a warrior of advanced age, dying of a terminal illness, immediately takes it upon himself to start public works projects in the hinterland town he's been assigned to govern. Oyaneko does this begrudgingly since he considers civil administration beneath his dignity as a warrior but he executes it with the diligence and competence of a true samurai. Now sure, Oyaneko is an idealized samurai but his circumstances illustrates how economically unviable it was for the daimyo to keep all their samurai with them at all times, especially decades into the peacetime of the era where samurai would become more bureaucrats than warriors anyway. Imagine if the clan had five or ten more men like Oyaneko, each overseeing a town or community that fed their daimyo's coffers.
>>152884881
And here we see the powerful men of the local court backstabbing and plotting against each other even as they conspire against their mutual foe. Extrapolating this behavior to the wider picture of Japan at the time, while the Tokugawa clan held the balance of power in their favor, even by the slightest of majorities, the rest of the great and minor clans just don't have the ability to form an anti-Tokugawa front, because that begs question of who gets to be the next shogun. Lord Hikiji is probably the most dangerous of the great lords we've met so far simply by virtue of him being able to think more than two moves ahead on the go table, which isn't a trait any other scheming lord has shown yet.
>>
>>152884412

One of the ways in which Usagi actually gets some development through the comic is that he does have these turns earlier on where despite him being a nice guy and even willing to coexist with commoners, he will suddenly clash with his values and default first back to his superiority as part of the samurai class, but then they start happening less and less as the comic goes. It's a great throughline. You even see it in other aspects such as how he regards foreign influences such as Christianity

So I'm trying to daily only draw very notable and often recurring characters, right. That's made me realise, we never really get proper characterisation for these guys, do we? The Neko Ninja get like four or five unique characters, but these guys only get Kazehime in her singular story, and I think there's a named leader in Senso?

>>152884483
I wonder if Tartakovsky was inspired by this for that one episode in Primal

>>152884766
>>152886317
The setting clearly includes the supernatural, but we also see that by and large people live as in real life, so the notion of just a few decades ago there having been clans of monsters feels a bit absurd for most of UY; but so does saying "oh it was just brigands". I think this is maybe moreso just a lingering remainder of the original concept for this setting where you did have goblins and ogres and so on as an open faction with humans which was clearly phasing out by now but possibly not entirely yet (after all Hebi is still seeing regular use and we just introduced flying bat ninjas, when later UY will by and large work on a logic of everyone just existing like humans and not animals)

This is some real hair splitting, but I feel like it was more intended as a warning/gentle reminder then a threat. As far as I know samurai could kill anybody for any reason and the only risk to them was other samurai/higher ranking samurai deciding to meddle. An unscrupulous samurai could just kill her and pocket the compensation.

>Usagi is not some modern person who thinks with a modern perspective but someone of a time and place, yet his common humanity shines through and frequently asks him to reconsider some of his strongly held opinions.
People really forget stuff like this when they write characters too many of them are completely morally perfect (at least on the "social" side). Usagi is allowed to be wrong and allowed to change
>>
>>152884553
Same. Its a weird mandela effect.

I like to imagine the wife justifying her own position. Pointing out their marriage had always been one of politics not love, being just as much a prisoner of social class as her husband. But at least she tried to make it work instead of running off with a lover and disgracing them both and she actually cares for her son and his future.

A summary of how every Usagi story begins
>>
>>152886894
At this point, the shogun having consolidated Japan under on rule, I'm pretty sure it was illegal on pain of death for peasants to possess weapons at all. If he were to just cut her down he wouldn't have the slightest problem with the authorities, it would be like a cop shooting a bank robber in the head. It's not just that it's okay, it's that he's *supposed* to do that. It's his literal job. As Anon says, this is also part of Usagi's long-term character development, but the fact that he limits himself to talking to her already makes him a nice guy for his position and the period.

Other families besides samurai were allowed to have clan mons. Merchant clans, artisan clans, etc had mons as well. Many Japanese who immigrated to America kept their ancestral house mons until WWII where, regrettably, a lot of the mons were purposefully destroyed in order not to arouse suspicion that these loyal Americans may have harbored pro-Japanese sentiments.

Today's drawings! Didn't have much to add- by my standards of notability it should've just been Yagi and Goro, but I really wanted to try Oyaneko and Monshiro, especially since Oyaneko kinda just looks exactly like Captain Torame- so I wanted to try making the designs more distinct between the two of them. Did some touches on Yagi and Goro based on the actual Lone Wolf and Cub manga, to make the designs more distinct. Otherwise the usual polishing other pre-existing ones- namely, added the bandanna to Chizu since she had it in her appearance this thread

Notice how the first panel divider disappears in Ando's shoulder?

Sakai is absolutely great at this.
>>
>>152892507
It's interesting as another data point in Sakai's development of the series and setting, because it's clearly implied to be tuberculosis but this time they don't make much of a deal about that. Later it will be much more clearly called out (a couple times IIRC) as a scourge brought by the Black Ships.

The bit that always gets me about this is that this has none of Stan's usual bombastic showman persona. He only uses four exclamation points in the entire thing! It's just simple, understated praise, because he knows the work will speak for itself without needing him to hype it up.
>>
>>152887330
Lady Koriko strikes me as the kind of person who would take umbrage at the mere notion of ever being asked to justify her actions. Every waking moment of her life is devoted to doing the socially correct thing, so (in her mind) her virtue should be self-evident and she herself should be above questioning.

Quick methodological question (and not a criticism, to be clear): why do you group Yaar/Arr/Arck/Yark but separate Yarg/Argh? (Yaar also strikes me as an equally reasonable variant of Arr or Yaaa/Yaah)

I always try to take the cries as if they were spoken. The cries look similar when read but when spoken, they do not necessarily sound in the same family. It's something that a friend who's in phonetics once explained to me that intonation, sequence of vowel and consonant and context can change how to pronounce some words. While we don't have the sound bytes of how they said it, I can at least try to reason the separation of categories:

>Yaar/Arr
Aar was taken when the first cry was a long Aaarrr. Yaarr sounds similar as the the y vowel blends into the cry. You can mix cries when the starting sounds similar but only if the end is also the same. If the end changes, it would most of the time create a different sound.

>Arck/Yark
Should have separated them from the Arr/Yarr when I tried them again. Will have to correct that.

>Yarg/Argh
Those g and gh are subtle and do not blend with the heavier -rk sound. Totally different.

>Yaah/Yaa
Yaaahs are probably said like a strident sound. The lack of Rs should make like it it's said with a open wide mouth.

As I said, I'm not an expert on phonetics. Hell, last year when I did the honorable/battle cries, I had to try and retry to reproduce sounds to see if they needed a different category or not and it took me a long while in the beginning. I don't believe my judgment is infallible (sometimes, I have to check again) and the need to clean up is something that I had to do in the beginning of last year's storytime and I'll need to also do it this year. But, I always take the cries audit seriously and try to do my utmost when doing the tally. If only it didn't take so long as I need to juggle with other things but such is karma.

This story’s got to be one of, if not, my favorite out of the entire series. Great climax that spells despair, but everything works out in the end, and the bit of text at the end showing that Oyaneko did see through serving his people is the cherry on top
Exemplifies my favorite aspect of this comic and what makes its stories stand out; plenty of bitter moments, but it makes the sweet ones all the more sweet

What’s good is that even when Usagi starts to seriously question the samurai code and the conventions of his society he never truly breaks free from it all. The rules run too deep and his dedicated his entire life to the ways of the samurai. But that still doesn’t stop him from questioning it all when the bodies of innocnen people start piling up and he doesn’t have much to show for following it all.

In early Islamic history 15-16 years was the youngest age to participate in battle, and younger then that were only allowed to be servants, (gather fallen arrows, be lookouts and tend to the wounded, etc). It's mentioned somewhere that even 18 year olds had difficulty carrying some type of greatswords

"The Archchancellor polished his staff as he walked along. It was a particularly good one, six feet long and quite magical. Not that he used magic very much. In his experience, anything that couldn't be disposed of with a couple of whacks from six feet of oak was probably immune to magic as well."

During the 1203 siege of Costantinople the crusaders couldn't manage to capture the city walls and begged the venetian sailors to join the assault, armed with oars they stormed the wall captured 25 towers and basically won the siege.
As for the swords being bad: I remember a very famous incident where a king hit a peasant on the head with the flat of the blade and the sword snapped in half, the king and his escort had to fled from the mob afterwards.

That's what's so fun about this series. It's such an eclectic mix of so many different influences, all of which clearly shine though. Yes, Musashi was known as "the sword slayer" for his habit of using wooden training swords and things to slap the side of his opponent's sword, causing the steel to shatter. Kind of a dick move, but Musashi considered most samurai to be assholes and seemingly felt no qualms about just straight-up fucking with them.
