Nah imma disagree there. It typically isn't much of an arc and just something refrenced. Sue brought it up based on her behavior but the story never made a point to do anything with it & it sorta just died after the apology. The thing is, Mike chafing against what he feels is expected of him is present early on, like pre-Acapulco early, and it's that aspect of him that took me past just pitying the guy. It really was engaging. But in more recent volumes, it feels like Taeshi is developing these character traits and arcs independently of Mike and then applying them to him. Like she converted Mike into a set of those tropey blob person comics, extrapolated from those, and then tried to convert the result back into "Mike". You end up with this kind of pancake stack of ironic story beats, because those beats would seem really punchy and clever as blob person trope memes.

I read this as Taeshi lacking the emotional understanding necessary to expand on flaws that were already present in his character. That would require starting from the premise that he is actually a largely good and selfless person, which I don't think she is able to do because she herself has never proven to be either of those things. So, with sincerity being a foreign concept to Taeshi, she had to undermine the idea that Mike acted that way for any reason other than self-reassurance or social benefit. Which leads to a noteworthy observation: Taeshi keeps the behaviors expected from pre-performative Mike. By which I mean before she decided he's really a faker on the inside. She tells us Mike has trouble accepting that he can be in the wrong, yet any reader can see how he's beaten himself up and angsted over mistakes in both the past and present, accepting his mistakes and regretting them. He only acts selfless to be liked and feel better about himself!...except we see him actually give a shit about other people for their own sake. He worried over Paulo and made himself vulnerable to help orange cat during New Years. In EF, he hated hurting Lucy despite no longer needing her and felt plenty of guilt ever since. Now, I think that Taeshi could try to strengthen her case by portraying Mike's behaviors as attempts to convince himself he's not a bad person, and she kind of did that when Mike bared his insecurities to Daisy at the library. But I don't think it would be an easy thing to establish, and it would call into question every other "sincere" statement made by other characters. You know, those heart to heart moments/cryfests the comic relies upon so heavily these days.

It almost seems like Taeshi is trying to gaslight her own readers into believing the same angle that Mike would after being gaslit so hard during LitS. But I have no such faith in this crazy woman.

Continuing my thought, if ANYONE ELSE was at the writer's desk, this could be a pretty decent setup. Let's say Mike has just been convinced he's a manipulative fraud who's only ever tried to play hero for the accolades, but is in reality way too self-critical and overly empathetic with a real problem lurching between extremes--much like Daisy told him at the library. In his mind, Mike clealry needs to stop this nonsense about being a good person and cut out that delusional savior complex. That's never what he was, so it's time to stop pretending. I think that Paulo is trying to balance the two cats and is doing a bad job. If Mike is outside by choice...well, then it's okay to keep his promise to Lucy, right? Works out for everyone. But even Paulo isn't stupid enough to believe that's the case, which is why he keeps asking for details. Likewise, he wants an easy solution in which both cats reconcile and co-exist at the table. It's ignorant and unrealistic, but it provides what he assumes all three parties want. I'd further like to think that even Paulo has limits when it comes to Lucy but do readily admit all it would take is another "sincere" apology or Mike offending him again to resolidify his loyalty to white cat. It's been the pattern so far.
