>kabochaI was going to quickly write a fun fact about how it was introduced by the portuguese, and the name and plant found its way back into lusophone countries as 'cabotiá', but a cursory search found a weird contradiction. first most places say it was introduced from cambodia (hence the name), but also that all Cucurbita plants are native to the americas, so either they spread quickly after contact or there's some misinformation here. furthermore I found a source that claims the modern kabocha variant was bred in the 1940s, so I don't know what to think of it.

>>152932175"Shi" is one of my favorite Usagi stories in the way it inverts the patterns of a typical "strange come to town" story seen in wandering swordsman/gunman fiction. Aside from the guy he personally helped, the villages distrust Usagi and don't want him there, blame him when roughs come to town, and are glad when he leaves. The pretty village girl who has a crush on him is self-absorbed and tawdry. The boy who resents Usagi for taking her attentions is brash and stupid, not really brave, and Usagi just threatens to kill him rather than giving any big-brotherly advice. They get together because Usagi told both of them to fuck off rather than showing to each other that they'd be a good match. The villian who betrays the other villian gets himself killed by being rash and sloppy.Usagi never finds out what the hell was going on.The gold is forgotten.

>>152932113>goofy yodelingkekThe serious answer is that Sakai gets more and more precise with the details as the comic goes on, so here they're probably screaming as they fall, but later they die without a sound and Usagi comments on it. The same thing is the answer to >>152933012; at this point in the comic Sakai either doesn't know or doesn't care (or potentially, he wanted to downplay the gnarliest aspects of the Japanese caste system, but I think we can all agree that that one's unlikely considering the shit he does show); later however the taboo becomes exact and Usagi discusses it with another character while they wait for the eta body removers to show up.
>>152931789Okay this isn't exactly a scholarly source so take it with a grain of salt but the miscommunication appears to stem from how they made it to Japan initially. According to this newspaper article, the Portuguese sailors who brought them to Japan were received by a daimyo in Kyushu. They brought him the gourd as a gift and through mistranslation he thought the gourd was native to Cambodia, instead of the sailors having departed from there to sail to Japan. >he modern kabocha variant was bred in the 1940sYes the variety being depicted in the comic is a kind of anachronism. Cucurbita moschata (shown on the left) is the kind that was brought over in the 1500s. The gourd most people call kabocha today is actually from Feudal America(!) and is called seiyo kabocha (western kabocha) in Japan, but just kabocha elsewhere. It was introduced to Japan in the Meiji era and its the kind being depicted in Usagi.Source:https://web.archive.org/web/20170909182604/https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2017/09/09/food/attention-turns-kabocha-squash-cooler-weather-looms/#.WbQyQGjP32cSource on picture:https://www.botanic.jp/plants-sa/sisiga.htm>>152931676>>152931692>Yes, I see. >>152935583>*bites into pickled vegetable*>I cannot think or comprehend of anything more cucked than another man raising your biological son. Honestly, think about it rationally. You are not there to feed, clothe, raise and rear your boy for at least 13 years solely so she can go and call another man papa. All the hard work you didn't put into your handsome son - reading him stories at bedtime, training him in the art of war, making sure he has a healthy diet, educating him, playing with him. All of it has one simple result: his loyalty is to another man.>Never raised the perfect samurai? Great. Who benefits? If you're lucky, your mountain hermit sensei who also had nothing to do with the way he grew up, who ends up training him. He gets to teach him bushido. He gets the benefits of his kind and sweet personality that came from the way your childhood rival raised him.>As a man who was exiled from his village, you are LITERALLY dedicating at least 10 years of your life to mushashugyo while your son calls another man 'father.' It is the ULTIMATE AND FINAL cuck. Think about it logically.
/v/ question here. It's been a few years since I played it but does anyone know off the top of their head if Jin has Usagi colors on either of his Ronin outfits. I know you can rock a decent Samurai Jack but what about Usagi

>>152932595A little bit, but they were also trying to be faithful to the tone of the original comics. They overshot the mark a little bit, but good on them for trying. '03 is the closest of the animated series to the turtle comics.
>>152934729>It's.... odd. That's probably the best way to put it. It's so far removed from Usagi proper I can't hate it for being a bastardization since it's basically its own thing. Where Leo's just randomly there and Usagi attacks him because he's being written OOC>>152931789>>152935258I don't have sources as deep as Enmanon's, but I'll note from wikipedia- the way it describes it having a Portuguese name of "Camboja abóbora" makes no sense to me- it'd be "abóbora de Camboja", the grammar is wrong on wikipedia; I also feel if they really did call it that back then, it'd still be called that nowadays- we have plenty of foodstuff, animals, etc, that we retain names in that format of "thing of place". The wikipedia page also mentions it might instead come from "cabaça", which makes more sense to me in that that IS a name we use nowadays for gourds. But it is, however, noteworthy the wikipedia page is unsourced on either of these claims, be it the "Camboja abóbora" or the "cabaça" one.Calling it cabotiá seems to be a thing in Brazil only, which would make sense as Brazil famously has a huge japanese diaspora.>>152931853Pure personal pettiness but this woman might be my most hated Usagi character, eeesh. >>152936433I doubt it, IIRC Ronin and Miller's other early work (e.g. Dark Knight Returns) doesn't use that style. He developed it for the first Sin City story.(Also, TMNT is a satire on a shit ton of things, but the main comic it satirizes is actually Daredevil. For example, the entire origin story sequence is basically Daredevil's origin story told from a different perspective – the guy getting whacked in the face with the canister is Murdock – and the Foot Clan is a riff off the Hand ninjas from Daredevil.)>>152936536This is the one that's really nutty to me, that Tartakovsky just ripped off Ronin wholesale and almost nobody ever seems to notice or comment on it.

alright, here's today's drawings!Skipping the TMNT for now at least since I do agree with the anons that complained a couple years ago how it's annoying that fanart-wise Usagi's always attached to the TMNT. With that said still included Kakera since I guess he's technically an Usagi character and I just always like the Mirage Splinter design. With the focus finally on Chizu, did a general revamp of her drawing. I don't quite understand her hairdo on this story though, so eh. We're firmly in the era of the comic where Stan is entirely fine using shortcut designs for the sake of production, which is good and smart, but does mean characters are looking very samey- so I tried my best to make an appealing-looking Chizu but still having her not just look like Tomoe. Also added Gunji, who I did my best to make look distinct from Shingen, and Eiji, since anon pointed out Eiji was mentioned before. Lastly, added the Shi assassins, since they look cool and all. Beyond that, added shading to Kitsune since I'd forgotten last time, one hopefully final adjustment to Gen's head shape, resized Jei down a bit since he was a bit too big, and that should be about it. I'm already struggling with canvas size and I've no idea how lont I can keep this going without needing to resize the canvas or resize the drawings themselves down>>152923481 last thread's

>>152937640>>152937822Yeah they look great here, fantastic job
>>152937898I think it's that they removed all the times where she fucks over her friends, but kept the 'lovable street rogue' angle. That, and when the action happens, she's just as willing to join in the fight, instead of hiding behind the fighters. They just excised the worst parts of OG Kitsune, and doubled down on the parts that are charming and endearing
>>152937926Incidentally, that seems to be the universal idea in these threads about 'improving' her in the comic. But I guess the main problem with that is... well, what do you do with her in the long-term? Because excising the 'awful' dimension is really just removing a dimension of her, period, leaving the singular remaining dimension of a straight character behind. And straight characters NOT the main protagonist tend to be written out more and more.
Anyone pick up the new action figures of Usagi and the Turtles they put out at Target? With the exception of some Transformers I'm not a big action figure guy but having a quality Usagi figure would be tempting if I could find one.
>>152935898
>>152938008Early Kitsune was pretty cool, I think keeping the street artist angle is important, she is better when she isn't a career burglar who pretends to be a street performer but a street performer who steals on the side to go by.

I'm still in Dragon Bellow Conspiracy so I've got catching up to do but I have questionsDoes Usagi like follow an internal timeline where he's growing older, we see others grow up, time passes, Usagi will eventually die, kinda like Judge Dredd or Conan. Not real time but there is forward movement. Or is it more classical cartoon forever in the feudal Japan era? I've not read far enough even in my furthest readings. also how old is Noriyuki supposed to be? I can't tell if he's like a child or a young teen. I feel like he should have more advisors around than just Tomoe but I also have no idea how their like system works, I'm wrongly comparing it to like Medieval Europe clichés I think Vol 4 of this era is the furthest I've read in Usagi.
>>152940098>Does Usagi like follow an internal timeline where he's growing older, we see others grow up, time passes, Usagi will eventually die, kinda like Judge Dredd or Conan. Not to that extent but yes there has been progress. We see Jotaro get older. >also how old is Noriyuki supposed to be? I can't tell if he's like a child or a young teen. I feel like he should have more advisors around than just TomoeHe does and it becomes a rather contentious point later.
>>152935422>are they edible ?Yes, especially the eyes.
Just realized Usagi and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure started around the same time, there's gotta be at least one piece of fanart of Jotaro and one of the JoJos right?it's only what a couple hundred years of difference
>>152940098>Does Usagi like follow an internal timeline where he's growing older, we see others grow up, time passes, Usagi will eventually die, kinda like Judge Dredd or Conan. Not real time but there is forward movement. Or is it more classical cartoon forever in the feudal Japan era? I've not read far enough even in my furthest readings.By and large yes, but there's a couple times we get thrown a curveball and told "actually this story that was made in 1992 has been retconned to take place after the stories made in 2022" sort of things. It does make the timeline a bit confusing in some points. But by and large yes, it's a single coherent timeline with aging, something like six years from the start to the latest issue? I think I remember some anons figuring out?
>>152940143Not exactly what you're asking for, but this is from a previous storytime.
>>152937527Not just Japan. When I was tramping around the Land of Dragons last year all the hotels I stayed in refused to have 4 as a room number. They also had all their room numbers begin with 88 since 88 is a lucky number. So if you are booked for room 305 you would actually be in room 88306.
>>152931359>sentry duty, again>oh bother!
>>152939061It isn't even that she makes things worse, but that the later stories act like she's a good friend despite her base treachery and insufferability what she does at the end of the story after meeting Chizu is unforgivable>>152938549I did have a fanfic idea about that involving Venus de Milo/Mei Pieh Chi. She would've been accidentally plucked as a toddler from a TMNT universe where there were 5 turtles that got Mutagen'd and Kakera raised her. Her abilities would come from him, her Chinese name would be him giving her a name from the Land of the Dragons so people would think she's an exotic foreigner rather than a kappa, and she would be the reason Gunji knows about Kakera and isn't surprised turtle people exist. But I didn't want to add to the giant pile of TMNTxUsagi Yojimbo fics.
>>152939625my hot take is that hikiji isn't evil, he's just your average sengoku daimyo that picked a bad time to start conspiring against the shogun. mifune was sub-par, he let a powerful vassal betray him. >>152936394good effect on the beards >>152937635but those are the best kind of jokes!>>152937640I just realized the way you use shadow is pretty cool, makes the characters pop out and look 3d.>>152938008>what do you do with her in the long-term? it involves a near-death experience and ninja yuri techniques, but we're not ready to talk about that. but truth be told, I like kitsune just the way she is. >>152938067do you mean pic related? it does look pretty good, I like the how the black lines make it feel like a drawing.

>>152941107>mifune was sub-par, he let a powerful vassal betray him.My take is that Toda saw Mifune's personality change after the murder of his family and decided he was too unstable.
