Why did it fail?
>>152940600my understanding is a lack of a shared universe and massive delays led to a lack of hype and brief but unsustainable spikes in salesif I had to rank the stories:green lantern > batman > superman >> teen titans >>> wonder woman
>>152940600The Superman and Batman ones were very successful and were usually one of the top selling DC trades the year the came out and kept selling pretty decently until Rebirth destroyed their trade sales in generalWW was successful for a WW bookTT and GL were massive flops thoughThe issue were the massive gaps between books. Even though BEO vol 1 and 2 sold great and the latter had good reception, vol 3 came out to no noise at all due to coming out fucking 6 years after vol 2 due to Doomsday ClockHad DC forced a more regular schedule to keep attention on the line and had some of the books been better (mainly SEO and TTEO) the line wouldn't have petered out so badlyQuite frankly DC should've locked the artists into a two year cycle where they have a max of 2 years to get the book out so they could've had at least 2-3 volumes come out every year
>Teen Titans Earth One>No Robin>Makes Terra the main characterWho thought this was a good idea?
>>152940600>DC looked at Justice League Dark, Justice League United, and Extraordinary X-Men and saw Lemire literally saying he can't write teams and decided to give him the one Earth One team book that would ever existWhat did DC mean by this
>>152941354They rushed Robin (a black version) in the last page of Batman volume 3
>>152941172Shame because it genuinely could have been DC's ultimate universe. The graphic novel format was friendly to new readers, too.Imo tho they shouldn't have called it "Earth One".
>>152942002>Shame because it genuinely could have been DC's ultimate universe. No, it couldn't. The point of these books was to do self-contained stories where the MC is the only superhero around, no shared universe. It's why we got shit like >>152941354, can't have Robin if there's no Batman. The Absolute line is the actual Ultimate DC universe.>Imo tho they shouldn't have called it "Earth One".Definitely, that just confused people.
>>152942036>The point of these books was to do self-contained stories where the MC is the only superhero aroundDC said otherwise
Earth One were only in trades. They sold well for trades, but comics still sell a ton more in floppies. So they hurt their own product by writing just trades. Absolute corrected this and are writing monthly floppies.
Slow
>>152940600Why were DC so bad at cloning an ultimate universe until Absolute happened? Now it’s rumored marvel doing an Absolute universe after ending the ultimate universe.
>>152942097The joke was about being a earth so young that there was still incongruentes(Like early Earth 1 in pre crisis). At this point they should do one of those two>Kill the earth and put Absolute there>Sent Wondy to another earth(and ignore TT) because is the only story that doesn't work with the others
>>152942097That was just Grant Morrison being autistic. It literally says right there that Earth-1 has no continuity.
>>152942198Wasn't All Star supposed to be DC's answer to Ultimate? Iirc that was also plagued bu delayed releases.
>>152940600schedule, it releases schedule was awful.
None of these books were particularly good. You had JMS writing boring books as usual and having Superman become romantically involved with a literal prostitute. Johns writing Batman as a fuck-up as usual. Morrison falling down a rabbit hole of Women's Studies and becoming an overall-worse writer in the process.>>152942548They all were. Didio just sucked.
>>152942669And GL?
>>152941148Is Green Lantern: Earth One really that good? The premise seems interesting
>>152944326Too different and not different enough in the wrong ways.
>>152944394It was fine.
>>152942548They may deny it but it was definitely originally planned to be, especially when you know that Loeb was originally supposed to be the writer for All Star Batman and what the plans were. Early Wizard coverage that showed Lee's designs pre-Miller along with later stuff Loeb said all pointed to them doing what sounded like an Ultimatized Batman. That was why Batman and Robin when All Star had Loeb involvement had different designs from what the Miller All Star Batman had. Once Loeb bailed and Miller came on board they decided to just make it part of Miller's Dark Knight Universe insteadBut yes not only were there delays on both All Star books (people were anticipating All Star Superman being the most late of the two only to find out it completed its story before All Star Batman #10 was out), the other planned All Star books never got off the ground due to delays and other reasons. All Star Wonder Woman got shelved because DC wanted Adam Hughes to work on Before Watchmen Dr Manhattan, All Star Batgirl never got past what, a pitch Johns put together? And supposedly he eventually used ideas from it when he wrote Earth One's Batgirl. I think there was also supposed to be an All Star GL and an All Star Aquaman
>In 2016, fan favorite writer J. Michael Strazynski follows up his best-selling SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE tale with a new look at the Scarlet Speedster in FLASH: EARTH ONE. In addition, Francis Manapul (DETECTIVE COMICS) will provide his take on the King of the Seas in AQUAMAN: EARTH ONE. JMS on Flash would have been a disaster, because his Wally would have been okay but would have forced to be Barry
>>152945163>Early Wizard coverage that showed Lee's designs pre-MillerNever heard of this. Got a link?
>>152945163They didn't deny, Didio was pretty open about how that was exactly what he was trying to do.>Marvel had such success with [the Ultimate line], and I kept on pointing to that. I thought to myself, We needed that. I tried a couple of times — the All-Star line was supposed to be a shot at that, the Earth One books were supposed to be shot at that. They were good as stand-alone concepts, and we got some great work from that, but it didn’t drive a line. And ultimately, the only way it works is if you drive the cohesiveness of the line. We were doing it piecemeal, but to really make an impression, to really catch the attention of the marketplace, you had to do something dramatic. And ultimately, that’s what turned into the New 52.
>>152945473It's in this thread:https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/149693539/#149697321There are three pages from Wizard #161 In the early promos for All Star Batman, Batman and Robin had those designs before Miller was announced as writer
>>152945524That's really interesting. Still, even woth that Batman, they wouldn't have had a cohesive universe as All-Star Superman is pretty stand-alone.
>>152945276Any information about Aquaman?
>>152940600Like most “creator-driven” lines it allowed them tok much freedom and mostly ends up with knock-off garbage that might as well be an OC. The inconsistent release schedule didnt help at all either. But really all of these are just not worthwhile stories.
>>152944394No, it’s terrible. If it were just a non-cape comic it would have been mediocre but it being a GL comic just makes it terrible.
>>152945017>>152945905It's hard to believe /co/. A lot of times, you get people saying something is great, but it turns out to be terrible (example: most modern runs), and other times people claim something is horrible and it turns out to be great (example: some older, less popular runs). You get steered so wrong by this place it's insane, even if it's so much more helpful than other sites. It's toxic positivity in one ear, irrational seething in the other.
>>152941172>TT and GL were massive flops thoughGL is the only EO book that actually holds up. What killed it was being helmed by a husband-and-wife team who divorced right during or after Book 2.
>>152945905Care to explain?
>>152945905it was decent, I thought the art was good and the story was solidvolume 2 was definitely weaker though
>>152948014he wont
>>152950027Damn
>>152940600>>152941148>lack of a shared universe and massive delaysThis, but also the fact that the stories just weren't very good or exciting. There was simply no point to EO at all.
>>152942097>uhh the whole earth is pliable and not set in stone yet. it's totally gonna be the shared universe in the future guysAnon Morrison is literally coping in that same image.Earth One was originally intended to be a shared universe during its conception in 2010, but then it took two years to get two different heroes out (Supes vol 1 2010, Bats vol 1 2012) and new 52 happened and rendered the entire line superfluous. With TTEO (2014) they outright said none of them were connected to mentor heroes and were the first heroes on their earth. Earth One becoming “this hero is the first on their earth” seemed to kinda be what the line became but DC had stopped caring about the line by then and thus never really pushed the idea.
WW had fucking fantastic art but cringe elements and then Vol3 had one of the worst woke misandrist psychotic breakdowns in the history of entertainment with them treating Feminist-Injustice/AmazonsAttack as a good thing.Worst of all was Diana refusing to give humanity the cures for cancer and such (because capitalist would just abuse such) until we have debased ourselves to her satisfaction.
>>152941172>Quite frankly DC should've locked the artists into a two year cycle where they have a max of 2 years to get the book out so they could've had at least 2-3 volumes come out every yearTHISIt should not have taken almost 10 fucking years to get three volumes of Batman. Yes almost 10 years. Volume 1 was 2012 and volume 3 was 2021. DC should've slapped Johns for wanting Frank on Doomsday Clock and chained Frank in their basement and told him to finish volume 3 before even entertaining the idea of drawing anything else. There were multiple years where they didn't even have an Earth One book coming out. Some anons here say not being a shared universe also killed it, which I guess it did for some autistic comic fans, but the entire point was capturing casual fans. Each hero having a self contained 3+ volume set within timely manner is way more important than ensuring everybody crosses over with each other and appears in each others books. If anything crossing over beyond there being a Justice League Earth One volume would probably have just confused the casuals they were trying to catch. Also in general DC stupidity struck because they really offered Flash Earth One to JMS despite his Superman Earth One being poorly received. You can get away with a badly written Superman book because Superfags will buy anything. A poorly written Flash book would mean it would sell bad after the couple months and not get a sequel.
>>152942097>>152940600idk but I really like how Earth One Diana is drawn shes very sexual and alluring, always sticking out her hips.
>>152951251Damn I didnt make it that far but that sounds pretty fucking funny. They should stop trying to rationalize the amazons interacting or ignoring human history just avoid this kind of thing altogether.
I don't care.
I do care.
>>152940600Superman Earth One was great. Much better than Superman Birthright and soooo much better than Superman Year One
>>152945598It is but it would've depended on how much of the story Morrison and Quitely had in place by 2004/2005. I think there was an interview with Morrison stating that Morrison and Didio kind of eventually agreed to let All Star Superman stand alone, and it didn't sound like it happened early on.I think that if Loeb had stayed on as writer he would've thrown in a reference to All Star Superman, though it would've also depended on if he knew how All Star Superman was gonna go. If he's aware that All Star Superman takes place further in the timeline then he could just make a generic reference (ie Lex escaped again) and not worry about it. If he makes a specific reference, like Batman stating that he's aware Superman has some kind of issue with his cells, then he unintentionally made it so that Batman is at the start of his career while Superman is sort-of in the final part of his career until the 853rd century.
>>152940600Lol I dunno
>>152940600Superman Earth One was too good to not have gotten one last story arc
Why did they give Clark a random bimbo girlfriend?
>>152958683She was a prostitute in the story
>>152958683>>152959763Makes me wonder what future plans were, cause it seemed to me Lois ended up being more like Commissioner Gordon instead of the love interest
>>152952592>>152952605Which is it!?
>>152940600Did it?
>>152940600*covers = everyone normal but wonder woman in bondageyou know I find it hard to sexualize her when they keep sexualizing her... can you not?
>>152951585women are retarded and irrational and will always be retarded and irrational even when trying to portray them as smart and rational
>>152940600So the verdict is none of these are worth reading?
>>152940600bad ideas + weird ideas + slow release + lack of unified vision
>>152944394GL was perfectly mid, which is high praise considering the state of capeshit
>>152953344If Zack Snyder was just gonna rip off Superman Earth One when he made MoS, he should've at least tried understanding what made the comic so fucking good in the first placeAlsoSuperman Earth One > Batman Earth One
>>152966897oof...
