How did internet humor go from this pure SOVL in the 2000s to the modern day of everything being a fucking wojak?

The barrier of entry to have to learn flash animation was just berely enough of a hurdle but was doable if you were a wacky teen, combines with the newgrounds voting method means you had to commit to things other teens would actually find funny. Which included idiosyncratic and spontanious and subversive gags, but also genuine affection for dumb childhood experiences.
Later the eBaumsWorld / Youtube Poop era took away the hand-crafted feel, and it just became recycling pre-existing media tropes and eshewing flash animation for video editing (basically just filters). Gone was the Newgrounds in-joke culture, replaced with content aggregators and later just recommendation algorithms.
I am unwilling to speculate why the specific reddit reaction images and wojaks and sharty bullshit took over. I am just going to say "ideology propaganda". Maybe the influx of oblivious and tasteless zoomers and browns and spambots and influencers are actually stupider than the 2000s kiddos...

You're getting mixed up between the forest and the trees. YTP culture wasn't the killer, it was the commericalization of the platform it was hosted on. First it was content ID systems taking down any video that featured "protected" music, then the rising awareness of channel monetization. People went from making things that were funny to making things that wouldn't get taken down or would make them money. From here you had MLMs like Machinima setting the foundation for multiple channels forming together to create a brand which set the deathknell in motion

Also increasingly easier access to the internet over the years, it lets people who shouldn't be on it in the first place have access. That's why everything is censored, hidden behind a paywall, etc.

I really miss when not everybody and their grandmother was on the internet.

Smart phones made it so everyone can have access to the internet. When internet use became a everyday part of life that's when corporations came and made everything profit driven and now we live in the hell we're currently in.

A combination of everyone being on the internet all the time and attention spans shortening. You could put effort into making a clever way to call someone a faggot, or you could use an existing image that does it already because you know you'll probably see a dozen other retarded comments that day, and none of them are worth more effort.

Same... the influx of shit was much lower. You basically had to search for it, instead of it being thrown into your eyes all the time.
