>>152945889How many times have you seen characters kiss in a non-porn anime? The Japanese didn't know/practice kissing and considered it a purely sexual, perverse act. To this day it's considered excessive when done in public. In Usagi's times, kissing was a carnal "trick" used mostly by prostitutes who had contacts with Westerners and it spread from there. That's why Chizu giving Usagi a kiss is a big thing. It was his first. This story is a flashback and the girl is a princess, not a sly ninja full of dirty tricks and certainly not a prostitute, so no kissing allowed.

It makes so much sense and explains so much.>scene: a late-night strategy session in the war tent. The damp summer night is still sweltering as braziers light thearea. Reports are still coming in from forward scouts, often contradictory. The senior officers and councilors go over stratagems repeatedly, trying to argue one case or another while junior officers scramble about trying to fulfill their masters' requests for logistic reports, the tally of fighting men, the wounded, water supplies, remaining armaments, etc. >General Toda senses an opportunity to curry favor with Lord Mifune. He waves his attendant over, and whispers something to him. A short while later his attendant re-appears, a steaming cup of tea in his hands. This teacup is a Toda clan treasure, hard won during the sack of a military town in the Land of Tigers some many years ago by General Toda's elder uncle. He will serve Lord Mifune a cup of tea personally. Surely this will win him favor.>Lord Mifune takes the cup and sips at the tea. He curtly nods to General Toda, then returns to his councilers deliberations and the movements of troop tokens on the map spread before him. >>152944338Interesting to note the dropped ideas and mentions in these letters. Usagi meeting up with Fei Hong would've been hype, so it's nice seeing Stan was planning that- though I don't think the chronology actually makes sense, wasn't Fei Hong 19th century? Potential hot take but I feel like mentioning it since he showed up for the first time today:I don't really care for Stray Dog. He's kinda just like a second Gen but also more one note. Like Gen get a lot more varied jerk with a heart of gold moments and is generally just a lot more multifaceted than Stray Dog ever was or becomes. He kinda sucks. I can't remember him getting much better either, but that might just be me misremembering. He's like late-stage Kitsune to me, only he was always kinda just eh. Like I always forget he shows up in the Slavers arc cause he just kinda shows up and could be taken out of it without the plot really changing at all.
>>152944006Every time I read this one I feel more and more for the, Kinuko. She's got some thorns but given the whole FEUDAL JAPAN thing it's understandable and once she softens it feels like there really could have been something if not for the whole duty thing.

>>152948788I like him for his role as a "good guy antagonist". If Gen is an Usagi secondary character, Stray Dog is a Gen secondary character, and I like what he does to Gen in getting us to show another one with Gen's job who is darker and grittier than Gen, as a "this is who Gen could've become", but then also is openly (to us) not a villain, to not allow that morality tale to just easily be filed away as "Of course Gen isn't like this, this guy's a bad guy!"Plus fun design.

>>152949044Good point.I'd seen people mention before that he works as an neutral bounty hounter since Gen can't really fit in that slot, plus having someone like that is an easy (if maybe lazy) way of adding drama and tension to an group.>but then also is openly (to us) not a villain, to not allow that morality tale to just easily be filed away as "Of course Gen isn't like this, this guy's a bad guy!"I feel like this would work better if it wasn't Stray Dog taking care of a whole orphanage, which is honestly kinda fucking hokey even for a comic. I think it'd work better if he just had a family to support.

>>152948788Kinda like what >>152948898 said he’s best seen as a character who interacts with the main cast (Gen specifically) than a character of his own, but yea he is pretty one-note and could use some development, at least in relation to him and the others. He’s far from my favorite, but that largely stems from my personal dislike of dramatic irony which is kinda the centerpiece of his character>>152943828>There’s more to Stray Dog than would appearDo they ever do anything with this? It seems to imply that Usagi suspects there’s a reasoning for why Stray Dog was acting like a jerkass and why Gen shouldn’t be so hung up about it, but in every subsequent run-in Usagi and co. just thinks he’s just a jerkass. May just be looking too much into it, idk

>>152936088>There's some extra stuff that is in a different order for reasons that now I think about it I don't fully get- why is itIt's because the series' internal chronology, the comic's publishing history, and our established storytime posting order doesn't always fit together perfectly. When Stan-dono moves to Dark Horse and stays there for 22(!!!) years, the overlap of the three fits together almost perfectly, as you might expect, but very early on, the situation is messy. For example, if we were to go in publishing order, before we even got to Shades Of Green, we would have to storytime Space Usagi. The long-established tradition began by our great founder Dharmanon is to go through the "main" Usagi Yojimbo story first, including anything new that has been published, then go into the side content, including spin-offs like Space Usagi and now Kaito '84. This side content includes some miscellaneous stories that feature Usagi and the TMNTs including the previous two unseen encounters alluded to in Shades of Green, one of which was published as a TMNT story, not a Usagi Yojimbo story, and the other one is just hard to find. tl;dr - small indie creator-owned feudalism suffering comic please understand.

Ok, today's drawing! We added Stray Dog (whom like Kitsune I forgot to shade), "General" Fujii and his big mook, Kuniyo and her kid (I'd forgotten she reappears), Stray Dog, the orphanage's matron, a first go at the informant based on how he looks in this story, and Princess Kinuko. then touched up the gambler (forgot his ballchin). >>152949408I get it's because all the extra collections go at the end, but it does strike me there's a couple cases (the TMNT stories mentioned there, maybe the colour specials?) that could be moved out of order to match the story, while still leaving Space Usagi etc for the end. That said, I'm not the one putting in the effort storytiming, so I won't complain further. I will make one suggestion- getcomics org also has scans of Usagi; for next year might be worth getting the scans there, just so they don't have the ReadComicOnline watermark every few pages.(4chan keeps refusing to let me post this because it's taken as spam for the url, hoping it goes like this)

>>152949408I wonder if Kaito will be done when this is all wrapped up, it's supposed to be five issues
>>152950188Nah, assuming no shenanigans like last years' hacking, we should take about 45 days of continuous storytimes. That's enough time for another issue of Kaito to be out, maybe two at most. So we'll probably end up having an addendum to this year's storytime some two months after it ends to do the entire Kaito.
