For almost ten years from the early 2000s, one of the Avengers' greatest antagonists was a local Brooklyn mob boss with a couple Glocks and a safety blanket. This period is called the Dark Reign.
>>
>>152948120
I hate this character and I hate Bendis' runs on Avengers. It's the most boring crap in the universe.
>>
>>152948120
The dumbest shit
>>
>>152948120
You almost made it sound epic, anon.
>>
>>152948120
I'm surprised he didn't get any synergy push in the comics when Ironheart aired. But come to think of it, neither did Ironheart. Has he been in any cartoons or vidya?
>>

Hey look, it's Michael French from Retroblasting

Hello fellow /toy/ soldier, hows it hanging?
>>
>>152948120
Blame Bendis, who was for some reason obsessed with this character, despite constantly using him in the same way over and over again ("THINGS ARE GONNA BE DIFFERENT FROM NOW ON FELLOW BAD GUYS, SO LONG AS YOU THROW IN WITH ME!")
>>
>>152948487
What i find weird is that bendis didnt even create the hood. He literally just coopted the character from who ever created him.
>>
>>152948487
IIRC the Hood's gang didn't even do generic street crime like dealing drugs or fencing stolen goods. The kind of basic thug shit that actually turns a profit. Instead they spent their time on smash-and-grab burglaries and picking fights with the NYC superhero crowd. Dumb shit.
>>
>>152948667
They have normal criminals to do that. Having superpowers rots your profit efficiency.
>>
>>152948390
Apparently he was in one of the children's anime where he got defeated quickly. And is apparently planned for Marvel Rivals.

He's going to be come the most popular version from exposure and there will be a lot of people being horny for him.
>>

>Blame Bendis, who was for some reason obsessed with this character
Might've been editorially related. When Wacker was on the Spider titles, he kept saying he wanted to see something made out of Kaine. Slott developed the Scarlet Spider thing for him, but then he didn't use him all that much as soon as the spin-off began publishing and Wacker moved away from the Spider-books. Add to that the fact he always treated spin-offs as some kind of wasteland ("I didn't want to use Kraven so I told the people writing the spin-offs he was theirs").

Should have been Hyperion.
>>
>>152948120
Bendis' Poochie glad Ironheart failed to make him more relevant
>>
>>152949936
Which is weird, since it was Infamous Iron Man the Hood was in.
>>
>>152948120
Total Bendis Poochie death, fucking hate The Hood. Which so mental cause he didn't even make the character yet tried to shill him so much with killing established villains of having him reduce a bunch of other more distinct Marvel villains into just crowd filling mooks for him, also everything he babbled about in his appearances the Serpent Society did before him but actually successfully.
>>
>>152948460
Alright for the most part
>>
>>152950048
How does the actual creator of the hood feel about bendis's weird hyperfixation on his creation and bendis sort of stealing his character away from him?
>>
>>152950048
How many of Bendis's pet characters were actually made by him out of total? In my head it is 3/8, but I might be forgetting some.
>>
>>152948120
He did make for a good Punisher villain and had a plan that almost worked.
>>
>>152948120
>almost ten years

no, no, Dark Reign was december 2008 to march 2010, the Hood got his powers beefed up by Dormammu AND Loki and still got his shit pushed in by Iron Man

"greatest antagonist" he ain't; he's virtually a different character to the guy from the 2002 miniseries, and he's nothing like the guy from the MCU
>>
>>152950096
There's like 4 or 5 he made but the rest are characters he just malformed to fit his writing.
>>
>>152950074
Outside of Saga I don't think BKV has worked in comics since before COVID.
>>
>>152950096
What do you consider to be the list of Bendis pet characters? I'm guessing
>Luke Cage
>Jessica Jones
>Jessica Drew?
>Purple Man?
>The Hood
>Miles
>Kitty Pryde
>Kong from USM
>>
>>152948146
Bendis's New Avengers run sucked but his Mighty/Dark Avengers work was solid.
>>
>>152948120
God I fucking hate The Hood. Talk about the lamest villain ever Marvel keeps trying to push for some fucking reason. He's not even endearing like Shocker or 8-Ball, and this fuck is somehow getting in Rivals
>>
>>152949841
>>152949863
>>152949891
>>152949925
I'm praying to god he's just a segue into Ghost Rider instead, a season villain like Knull or Collector where he steals the spirit like he did in comics not to long ago
>>
>>152951508
I don't think he's being pushed much anymore. Was apparently playing werewolf hunter last time he appeared.

How dare you. The hood was once Marvel Legends figure of the year!
>>
>>152951533
Besides that terrible Ironheart show, we may or may not suffer him in Rivals. Which I'll get NetEase credit, they can pretty much fix anyone at this point, but I don't want to validate such a crap character. I get it's supposed to be "What if a imposter magician used dangerous magical artifacts to get ahead in the mob world", which better more competent writers could work with, but the result we have is the most pathetic excuse for a bad guy ever. His look sucks, his name sucks, and even on the premise he's sort of just pathetic. He can't even learn basic magic, he just steals trinkets that usually backfire on him. Fucking Moon Knight had a guy recently who was so pissed off at Wrecker that he actually spent the time to learn necromancy, and was way better than Hood.
>>
>>152951590
Learning actual magic makes it difficult to depower characters later when they need to fight weaker heroes. You'd have people wonder why they are bothering with conventional weapons if they have something stronger in their arsenal.

>>
>>152949863
Tokon wasted a slot on Danger. Marvel game division has ZERO idea what they're doing. The worst part of it is that game onlies will eat up whatever you in front of them and pretend their fans.
>>
>>152951778
This game just got a revival, should I check it out? I'm not much of an MMO guy but I'm a huge Marvel fag
>>
>>152951823
If it is the same company that had at least four different flavors of "cyborg girl", it isn't that surprising they would make an overly cute robot girl with a shitton of weapons.
>>
>>152948120
I love when Bendis said about him writing Hood raping Tigress how he boasted that Hood just went and did it. Whether intentional or not he was telling people how much big of pussies Quesada or Brevroot are as editors. If you are a writer there you can push any stupid shit and you'll get away with it because the editors dont care or are so cowardly they cant tell you no.
>>

I liked him in that House of M nostalgia(?) mini that released four years after it was over. I thought it used him about as well as it could've. Helped that he died in the end.
I still don't get what the idea was with it. I guess capitalize on Hood popularity, since it was around that time.
>>
>>152952131

>>
>>152952154
Fucked up to think that Hood and Tony Stark are holebros
>>
>>152948120
Neat. I hadn't read many comics of that era, so I only knew The Hood from side material and quite liked him there as this street level goober that was punching above his weight and getting into messes because of it, but barely scraping nevertheless. I'm glad I hadn't read those comics you're talking about, because I could see this getting insanely old real quickly as a persistent enemy and one punching far too above his weight, and I wouldn't have high hopes upon seeing that signature in the bottom left.
>>
>>152951859
Wasnt hood against rape in the original mini he first appeared in though? Hes just a completely different character later on after bendis stole him, isnt he? Ive never read any of bendiss stories with the hood btw
>>
>>152948487
>who was for some reason obsessed with this character
What's wrong with a writer pushing a character they found interesting? A mentality like that is how we get stuck with the same characters for decades
>>
>>152948120
I remember he was in the running as a serious contender to become the next sorcerer supreme after Strange. And all he had to do was to kill every magician more qualified than himself, which just so happened to be everyone. That was kinda silly. Also kinda funny when he entered Daimon Hellstrom's home and got knocked on his ass.
>>
>>152948390
He did, he became Ghost Rider for a miniseries
>>
>>152954554
Wasn't that a couple years before the show landed on disney+?
>>
>>152948487
He wanted a crimelord and Hood was a crime guy. It didn't matter thst Bendis's use of him had nothing to do with his character and personality in his original series since it's not like Bendis ever cared about minor things like consistent characterization. There was a round hole and that peg was going to be smashed in there no matter how square it was.
>>
>>152954500
The character that Bendis wrote was not the character from the BKV mini. He was practically an OC.
>>
>>152951768
Yeah, just some low level schmuck with a hood whose ability isn't even that impressive trying to survive as a criminal in a world of god killers and psychos was good.
>>
>>152954542
Them treating Sorceror Supreme like a title anyone can just have is another Bendisism that needs to die. Strange earned it from the Ancient One by besting what was basically a Great Old One, helping the Ancient One to achieve oneness with the universe in the process and learning that said oneness with everything was the whole point. It was to signify that he was on a journey of cosmic enlightenment.

Seeing characters like Brother Voodoo or Scarlet Witch have it or characters like the Hood even being considered is retarded.
>>
>>152954699
At least in Wanda's case they're addressing how arbitrary the whole thing has become.
>>
>>152954500
Yeah but it's Bendis pushing a character, that only leads to absolutely awful stories and characterisation.
>>
>>152952254
It's marvel diablo with tons of characters to choose from. A lot of them have interesting mechanics like Juggernaut whose "mana" is momentum and fills up by constantly moving since he's unstoppable
>>
I wonder if we'll see a "plainclothes era" again after Bendis makes his return to writing the Avengers.
>>
>>152948559
>>152950048
>waaahhhh Bendis didn’t create the Hood, why was he using him
>How dare you take a pre-existing character and do something with them! Now I can’t whine about him using an OC!!!
>>
>>152951590
Kinda the whole point is that the Hood was just a common criminal who got super lucky by finding a supernatural item and then started exploiting it to make himself a big shot by finding other trinkets to exploit and grow more powerful and ultimately he bites too much for him to handle, he fucks up, loses everything he built and even the very hood that gave him his superhuman start and edge was also demonic by nature so even on that front he was always fucked and the more he tries to game the system and not pay the price for fucking around with magic he doesn’t really understand the more it comes back to bite him in the ass
>>
>>152948120
and it was fucking kino

marvel was legitimately better in the bendis era than it is today and i just dont know why admitting that makes /co/ seethe so bad.

I liked the Hood but he never should have been such a major threat. The appeal of his original comic was we got to see a day in life of what was essentially a street level villain with dreams of conquest. Should have stayed like that for a while (or a bit longer) before he went into the mob boss territory. He never should be an avengers level threat, he could just fight The Defenders or some shit.
>>
>>152957374

The shit that was good during the early 2000s was in spite of the Bendis-Millar axis, not because of it, and most stuff that actually *was* good ended up getting ruined by the constant event shit.

>>
>>152952154
>I still don't get what the idea was with it. I guess capitalize on Hood popularity, since it was around that time.
No, there were 2 or 3 House of M minis released years after it ended, IIRC there were 'Avengers' and 'Civil War' minis as well as that one. Supposedly it was because the trades for the original event and it's tie-ins were very in-demand in libraries, and they'd asked Marvel for more House of M content.

>>152953955
That anon was wrong, the Hood didn't rape Tigra, he beat her up, threatened to kill her and her mother, and the story got complaints for the artist 'sexualizing' the scene by having Tigra's shirt burst open as she's getting beaten. Even though she was still wearing more than her actual costume.
>>
>>152963487
Rare case where there was nothing to ruin.
>>
>>152954699
Nobody who writes for Marvel reads old comics anymore, anything pre-Quesada is increasingly treated as something the current writer can ignore if it contradicts the story they want to tell. And Marvel as a company want to treat the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme like it was a WWE title belt.

We at least started out from a point that made some sense, with Strange disgraced by his actions in World War Hulk and being stripped of the mantle, but instead of a new Sorcerer Supreme being trained and earning the title, it's just randomly bestowed on someone new, the story teased a lot of popular and important magic characters as candidates but Bendis gonna Bendis and pulled Brother Voodoo out of limbo instead because of his known fetish.
>>
>>152964015
Morrison's Marvel Boy was solid.
