Pixar has been shifting towards this cutesy, blobby, watercolor-inspired art style for the last five years now as their "new identity" and I have no idea why. It's losing a fuckton of charm when translated into 2D, it's obviously not a matter of being budget friendly because their movies still cost way too much for what they are, and general audiences don't seem to like it very much.

So why are they doing it? Is this just a matter of, "We've gone this far we have to keep going"?

Realizing now I should've also thrown in some Elio concept art but just plain forgot this movie existed.

I like the turning red art style and i dont get the hate so much. I really do think most of the hate is just normies being psy-op'd by the "le bean mouth" meme into disliking this type of art style.

All these art styles are fine in their 2D concept art. All the appeal is vacuumed out in 3D and it's obvious that Pixar has not yet cracked the code into that almost seamless transition that Dreamworks and Sony have with their concept art. Like, if they're gonna lean so heavily into these watercolor look for ALL the concept art across every one of their movies (and one show), I don't know why they won't push the 3D textures and lighting to also try and emulate it.

Pixar used to be ahead of the game of everyone on a technical level, and now it just feels like they're really falling behind while trying to hedge all their bets on art style but not actually committing to it in a way that matters and would make them stand out.

Ming is getting REAL close to dethroning Helen as Sexiest Pixar Girl...

I kind of want them to push for several different art styles, it just feels uninspired to have all of their cartoons look the same. Back in the 90's we had several different art styles. yet they all felt 'Disney-esque'. Nowadays they all just look the same, to me anyway.

The reason for this push mainly has to do with how Studio Ghibli has been a big influence on Pixar since it's early days, but to be specific: a lot of the kids who grew up watching Pixar and then went on to work for the company were ALSO fans of Ghibli The oldest people still working at Pixar had their art mostly informed by 60s-90s stuff and older, while the younger artists are drawing from the 90s to now.

Part of her appeal is that she has a wild rebellious side that's been suppressed for decades. Only Jin can unlock it

It is an extremely difficult task to blend influences from Miyazaki and Takahata with other styles and cultures in a way that works well.
That's the same in Japan, but Jap artists have been trying to distance themselves from it because Ghibli is like the beatles for them and they know they'd be despised when they make a half-assed ghibli-inspired work.

>Ghibli
That's the impression I get, but it doesn't feel genuine. Doesn't feel much like a homage to me, feels more like an attempt to copy someone else's homework without their consent, and it ends up looking like a half-assed, half-baked attempt.

Hell, Miyazaki would probably be pissed at the notion of Disney trying to copy his style.

Well, they have less than half the training and institutional knowledge in those roles that the previous generation did because careers changed completely. Given the opportunity to develop they’ll be comparable in the future.
