I feel as if they just aren't needed.

I like them.

They can be distracting, but I don't mind them

this is a perfect example of why they often suck
you can't see what the fuck is going on cause of all the stupid words. didn't even register that the fist panel was a cannon until you see it in the third panel without the stupid sound effects

i think sometimes, very rarely, they are used in a way that improves the panel, most of the time they either suck and obscure the image, or they are used subtly enough that they don't really add anything

Depends on what you mean, I don't read them out to myself like any other word but I hear the noise in my head when I see them. I think they're a pretty important and fun part of most comics.

nta but you can intuit that its supposed to foreground the fx, they're the point here, it's not a traditional page/structure
>>
>>152959881
you're wrong and I bet you don't like speech bubbles either
>>
>>152959881
Do you also get bothered by sfx in non illustrated literature?
>>
>>152959881
Yeah me too. Sometimes they're redundant and cover the art

It's the opposite, but given the typing style you're retarded, and spiritually brown. This is how SFX should be, a crucial part of the comic when used.

First panel is an explosion sound and the bird reacting to it.
>>
>>152959881
I actually think i "view" them more than read them.
They essentially function more like motion lines do for me.
>>

On the one hand, I feel like they're one of those things that make a comic a comic, and done well they can really help put across the intensity of what's happening. But on the other hand, I do just kind of glaze over them a lot of the time when reading, and the writers who get too cutesy with their sound effects being like "punchintheface" or whatever are just irritating.

yes

It's okay to admit you're still learning how to read comics. Take some time to pick apart why the artist chose to render the sound effects like that and how that supports what's happening. You assumed it was a mistake but have you considered that the intention was to convey a bird being startled by a sound it didn't initially recognize? Don't treat everything as a speed reading competition.

Who the hell are you to determine that?

I don't usually like them but this example is exceptionally well executed.

I don't know anyone who reads sfx in comics
