So I went two both parks last week after hearing Toon spin might be getting refurbished.

How and why did Roger rabbit get such a small ride? Adjusting for inflation, that movie made 829 million at the box office. On the other hand, Cars only made 554 million but got the entire town and 3 rides.

I really have to wonder how long Toonspin and Gadget's coaster have. They're cute but short rides and Mickey's toon town has zero merch for them.

And can kids understand toon spin? The que is you walking down back alleyways in toon town at night while old jazz plays because its a nod to old pulp noir. Would a kid get that? And the ride is Roger saving Jessica....I guess?

Perhaps because it’s not wholly their own creation. The movie is (incredibly loosely) based on a novel after all.
>>

The ride was originally going to be a two-story attraction, but they couldn't get a way for the ride vehicles to navigate the transfers with the tech at the time.

Roger Rabbit used to have more of a presence in the parks back in the day. Character meet-n-greets, imagery all over, merch. It's only in recent times that it fell victim to the same dumbing down as everything else, capping off with the attempts to cover up Jessica. (I remember hearing that there was no way to market her in contemporary times on account of how she looks, but I got no source on this). Even the ride got hit by this when they put a trenchcoat on Jessica and bumped her to main protag of the ride story.

I think Zemeckis said that.

Its not just roger. Its the rescue rangers too. There are like 3 rides in mickey's toon town and only mickey's runaway train has merch. They could at rhe very least have a small pull back Benny the Cab and 1.5 inch rescue rangers figure set.

Instead they fill the shop with the same shit all the other shops have. You can get mostly the same shit in all gift shops at both parks and the world of disney store

Probably depends on how obnoxious you are.

Also you can Probably get it in easy. Just put it in a disney bag in a backpack

I feel like this is an over all problem with modern Disney.

Its mostly the same crap everywhere. It used to be that attraction shops had unique things and you really had to look around. That is much less the case now. You'll see a lot of the same shirts, same pins, toys, etc

If you’ve been there you know they are tight on space. Back when this was made the 2nd park with Cars was just the Disneyland parking lot with dreams of Westcot in their eyes. So that Roger Rabbit got a whole land in the flagship park when the trend of single IP lands did not become a thing for 15 year later is indicative of itself how successful the film was and how they saw it. No one every got one beforehand
>I really have to wonder how long Toonspin and Gadget's coaster have. They're cute but short rides and Mickey's toon town has zero merch for them.
Roger is not long for the world. They were going to replace it with a Ducktales (classic) attraction in 2021 but that got canned because of Covid. In a park where you are tight on space and most Walt attractions are classics that have to stay or their will be mass riots, a 30 year old ride is not going to obtain that classic level to stay. What kills it further is since the author got the rights to the book back they cannot use the names Roger Rabbit or Jessica Rabbit on merch or anything else not built, only the designs, so it is now a dead end ip.
Gadget will probably stay awhile since it is Chip n Dale themed

Disney lost the film rights, not the park rights.

Wolf also seems to love the disney versions of the characters. He constantly posts fan art of those versions on his social. I think he also posts photos of the merch too.

I think he would renew park rights and sign off on merch for a lot less than a lot of writers. I think he understands that the park essentially advertises his books. Without the park ride, people will forget.

Supposedly it isnt wolf but Steven Spielberg, whom owns some of the roger rabbit film IP that is the problem. But who is to say how much of that is conjecture.

It could be as simple as 1. Modern disney is really lazy about older IP and 2. Disney might still be sour that Jessica's store flopped at pleasure island. They're too stupid to see that they should lean away from so much Jessica merch and instead mix it up with Roger, Herman and Benny. It would be impossible to not sell little Benny's with Roger at the wheel. Kids love cars with faces. The ride is right there by the gift shop

>gadget is safe

Anon, that ride would be easy to reskin. And kids dont know any of those characters

Toys of Judge Doom and the weasels, too! Hell, throw in toys of the Toon Shoe!
>>
If ebay is anything to go by, Disneyland never sold much merch for Roger or the rescue rangers. There is almost nothing on ebay for Disneyland Rescue Rangers. For Roger there are a lot of pins, a few plushes and an art print from 94.

I think super7 put out a doom and weasels. But yeah, shame there isnt like a toon squad set.

That person that wants to bang doom, sounds like sometimes he gets a special spot for halloween at night

Delightful, isn’t it? It’s been happening every Halloween season since 2023! I hope they bring him back this year! Alas, I don’t live on the west coast, so I doubt I’ll ever see him in person. I’d probably be too shy for it anyway.

Moichendising helps, Plus making lands and attractions are expensive, Toontown technically is the Roger Rabbit Land.

I can’t believe Gary Wolf wants to make a fucking live action Jessica Rabbit movie of all things.

Seriously, how well does he expect that to do, especially in today’s day and age?
>>

>Seriously, how well does he expect that to do, especially in today’s day and age?

It could do well enough IF it got money behind it and he worked out some kind of special distribution deal. But he is 85 so I bet he doesnt have the time or energy to get ir done.

There are two ways to get it animated right. They can either let Bobby Pills animate it, who still knows how to animate hot women, or a japanese studio. Then work with cartoon network / adult swim for a year's worth exclusive showing rights in exchange for using Hannah Barbara characters. That should provide the movie with enough old toons to make it look right.

But even then, the results will just be ok. The orginal had over 300 animators. Who even has half that now? Aren't all studios like 25 people in toonboom? Rick and Morty has like 50. Same with Bobbypills.

Id love for Wolf to get what he wants but it seems unlikely to come out good

They lost the rights to the name “Roger Rabbit” for anything but what they already have now or are paying a fee for, as this rights reverted to the author. They have rights to the film and the designs from the films. Notice how all of the very limited merch the past 3 years has only the design but never anything saying the character’s name.
That along with the fact that even if the author did not get rights back they’d have to share rights with Amblin to do anything pretty much kills the character.
>Anon, that ride would be easy to reskin. And kids dont know any of those characters
Chip n Dale are evergreen characters they want to continue to keep present for merch
>>
>>152979960
Have you read the plot of the book he wrote that he wants the movie to be based on? Jessica Rabbit is a live human woman who becomes a secret agent before getting turned into a toon towards the end. It's also got her resenting her secret organization's top agent, because she's smarter and better than him despite her only having two years of training. It's literally made to be turned into modern Hollywood slop. And Wolf is 85, it doesn't need to be good, he just needs a decent paycheck to coast on for the rest of his life.
>>
>>152981690
He's probably attempting to clean the character up to get her back in the parks.

Which will probably be futile because modern execs jusr dont like her because she is hot. There was never a problem wirh the disney version. She was always the smart loyal loving wife on the Disney side. It was a big reveal in the movie.

But Disney executives dont watch their own movies.

The book version is mixed. 1st book has her as a money and cock hungry bomb shell. Books after that are ambiguous on if ahe is loyal or not. Its really up to the reader how much of her roaming lust is just a joke and how much of it is true
>>
>>152981432
>Chip n Dale are evergreen characters they want to continue to keep present for merch

Yeah, but rescue rangers isnt. And even the classic chip monks have almost no merch at the parks

Does it come with a barrel of Dip?

I wish NECA would make some figs.

They're the only company I can think of that puts out pretty good figs below 50 that would bother to get all the copyright holders approval.

Mondo might but the figs would be $250 a pop

I haven’t read it, but I know of it, which is exactly why I’m dreading this garbage movie. Seems no IP is safe from being raped by wokeslop.

Yup. He’s said it a few times over the years, apparently, most recently in 2024.
