The world is still meaningless to him and the order the bat or the cops or even the crime order tires to keep are all pathetic attempts at trying to escape the true uncaring world and the nature of entropy. The only thing that matters is what makes your soul burn and feel, and anything that doesn't does not matter.This would make him more relatable especially in a grim time like current year where the order of things seems less and less reliable. >>152967557I also like this cuz it can lead up to the joker caring about Batman overtly. He hates him and wants to fight him, but like it always happens, the bat is his ying to yang. He would believe they need each other and while he would want to stop Batman so he can do what he wants, but he doesn't want to KILL Batman. As a character?I'd give him a very defined role and niche in the Gotham criminal world. The biggest problem with the Joker is he is portrayed as Gotham's number one criminal, absolute super genius, everyone is terrified of him, blah blah blah, but he has no actual 'place' in Gotham. He is as much of a boogieman as Batman, only unlike Batman he's not watching from the rooftops but instead picking his nose in some abandoned warehouse.Give the Joker and his gang defined territory within Gotham. A place they congregate and hide out, similar to the Iceberg Lounge but in a way that suits the Joker. If he is so smart, then he can come up with a front organization. Maybe some shitty mental health clinic where he can screen potential new henchmen that will go along with his schemes but are also disposable in they'll happily die for him as well.The Penguin works very well in my opinion because he has a capability to establish himself as a legitimate gangster. Two Face can do the same to a certain degree, even if he is more volatile. But at present the Joker is too much of a ghost in Gotham's criminal landscape. He should be anarchic, but he does need to exist to a certain degree as a physical person who lives in the city, just as a criminal one.And there's precedence for this already. Good Joker stories like the one where he blackmails a loser into doing his bidding, gets tricked with fake money, him offering money to a guy to watch his car and not kill him because that's not funny, or the whole Jokerz gang in Beyond. Him having a physical presence and niche works better for him story-wise, because it allows for a jumping off point as well as writing his presence in as part of Gotham's background milieu.

If I told you there was an evil space alien that sucked out brains but he wasn't coming after you, then you'd be relieved. If the Joker is a ghost within Gotham and only shows up when the story needs him to, he's not scary.In order for the Joker to be scare, he has to be real. He has to be capable of coming to you. And to the reader, there needs to be things in the world that are basically like the Joker. Things that you'd actually be afraid of, and not in a "I'm five years old and this kept me up at night" way. The Joker has to be more real and grounded in order to be more terrifying, not more extreme. That's one of the reasons why Joker's Favor works out so well, because it's some rando not at all dissimilar to the viewer/reader. When the Joker goes after Batman, Batman can take him. But if the Joker can and does go after specific groups of people in Gotham, randos, then the Joker can be truly scary. But Joker ripping his own face off? Not scary, who cares. It's only when there might be a ghost in your house that you're capable of being scared of ghosts, otherwise it's just a made up fantasy that you'll stop caring about.
