Batman at least has the excuse that he's a supergenius billionaire so that if he let himself go, he'd turn into a Doom figure. Murdock doesn't really have that. I get the idea that he has the inherent rage and desire to help, so he goes out to punch lawbreakers while putting them in jail through the law in his day life. But his constant whining comes off as entirely self-centered when he doesn't really do anything guilty. He doesn't kill to solve the problem permanently, and he keeps torturing himself. That to me is not interesting, it's just annoying. Not that most other street-level characters are any better, most of them fall into the same pitfalls, but DD stands out the most.
