I suspect that Star Fox is in a similar boat. Rail shooters aren't in high demand, so a new classic Star Fox game is gonna have a minimal audience, meaning it's hard to justify spending money making a new one. Obviously a third party developer could make a new Star Fox game, but Nintendo is notoriously hard to work with. Remember that Shigeru helped develop Star Fox Zero, which was a game that everyone on the team knew was trash (primarily because of the controls) but they kept pretending everything was fine. It was released, panned across the board because of said terrible control scheme, and Star Fox was shelved again.You can't make a Star Fox game without Shigeru breathing down your neck, and I just don't think he's that good at making games in 3D. I think he has a natural inclination/insight for 2D games, but it's not really there when a game goes 3D. Like he wanted Ocarina of Time to be in first person, but people on his team basically just disobeyed him and made it in third person instead. Then when Shigeru saw the result he was like "Yeah ok this is fine." I imagine a first person Zelda Game on the N64 would be like trying to play TF2's medieval mode without mouse look. It'd be janky as fuck.
