I found a panel where Scott asks Knives for casual sex once he realized she turned 18, but I think that was also when Ramona wasn't talking to him and his life was falling apart. Either way, the whole point of the series is that Scott is a bad person trying to become better

The other characters call it "bad", but O'Malley honestly was a bit too immature or amateurish of a writer at the time to treat most of the fucked up things Scott does with any real gravitas, at least in the early volumes. People say Scott being a piece of shit was ALWAYS the point, but I don't think it was.

When I read it, the early volumes very much seemed to be playing everything straight, but as O'Malley progressed as a writer he realized just how much fucked up shit he was letting Scott get away with and started to backpedal a bit. Scott's character development is decent enough, but most of it felt largely unplanned. The Simon Lee thing (Kim's first boyfriend) stands out in particular as a being a very blatant and sloppy retcon.

I hate this gay ass series, it's writer and it's entire legacy.

What's ironic is the same type of chicks who post the Scott meme were the same ones getting picked up by 25 year old's in highschool lol

The irony isn't that he was bad for dating a 17-year old (which people give him shit over in the comic), it's that he was bad because he immediately cheated on his girlfriend with the brand new manic pixie dream girl who literally skated out of his dreams.

Knives spends most of the story coping with the loss of her first boyfriend, who used her as a rebound girl and dumped her (without officiating it) until months later, when he was forced to. She attacks Ramona at the library for "stealing" Scott, and after Stephen Stills told her what Scott did to her she attacked Ramona again, revealing that Scott's a bad person who cheated on them both and lied to Ramona about it. That's the issue that gets Ramona to leave in volume 5, and gets Knives to begin to focus on herself more instead of go head-over-heels for her ex-boyfriend, leading to her maturing by the end.

The 17-year-old thing is less that Knives is underage, and more that she's young and innocent and Scott is destroying that innocence by dragging her into the messy mid-20's world of bars, garage bands, and young adult dating.
