For the last few anon's who's left on the comic side of the board....Do you collect comics for the value or to read them? Do you do dollar bin diving?

For me, it's been always the later. I've only been buying trades for years now, but I'm getting back into older single issues since there's a lot of good stuff that never got collected.
>>
>>152983287
To read, to collect, and for key issues just to have them. Monetary value implies I plan on selling, which I wont. It's more bragging rights for that kind of thing. If I like a run enough, I'll get the omni/trades.
>>
>>152983287
I buy them to collect. I mostly read online, but I’d love to read physically. My general process is
>see an issue I’m interested in
>read online
>if I like, try to buy
>if I don’t, no money lost

I’m pretty new to all this (didn’t read capes until last Julyish) so I don’t have anything physical yet, but my LCS is having a big sale this weekend that I’m going to go through to the best of my ability.
>>
>>152983287
I only buy comics that I aim to re-read.
>>
>>152983287
Storage concerns is a personal pet peeve so I primarily buy if it's not scanned yet or as a gift

I just buy stuff that is cheap in garage sales, car boot sales, fleahmarkets and also promotion in newspress stands like eaglemoss stuff.

If you buy comics for the value you should kill yourself
>>

There are so fucking many of these leeches at local cons now. I struggled to find a single booth selling actual floppies that didn’t have them slabbed and graded. The single guy with a proper long box and old issues out of some shitty plastic casing had basically nobody at his booth, while the graders were full up with dysgenic kids and obese 40-somethings. I ended up having a decent conversation with the floppy guy on the matter and he just sounded so depressed. Spent most of the con after that just on his phone.
>>
>>152983287
I just want to collect the comics and characters I like. Value isn't really a factor and honestly I'm through the moon if I can find a bunch of cheepo issue.
>>
>>152983287
I collect singles to read and personal value. Comic collecting with the intent to resell is just a headache and the scale of my library is just more important to me.
>>
>>152985809
This! I fucking LOVE dollar bins.
>>
>>152985950
Yeah, it's nice to have a key issue or whatever but for the price some of these things go for, especially after retards started grading everything just to add a zero or two to the price of a comic that's not worth much...
>>
>>152983287
To read them. Dont bag most of my floppies and dont board any at all.
>>
>>152986178
I've honestly been getting back into floppy hunting over trying to collect things like omnibuses and trades. For one there are some of the later that go for obscene prices to where getting a chunk of collected issues is just cheaper. Secondly it's just more... FUN, I guess. Like I enjoy reading the collections of books I like but there's just something about spending a rainy day thumbing through your bin of books and reading an issue because it caught your eye or because you remember it fondly. It's not perfect. There's a lot of gaps and if a story continues in another book you have to go find that but even that's kind of it's own joy.
>>
Collecting comic books expecting them to be valuable in the future is as retarded as people who collect bottle caps expecting those to be valuable in the future.

These things were valuable BECAUSE nobody collected them, they threw them away.
Now millions of boomers have huge hoards of comic books claiming to know what they've got. These won't be valuable for literally hundreds of years.
>>
I blind buy from the discount bin at half-price books. Expectations rock bottom and I'm often surprised.
>>
>Here's a copy of an overprinted comic from a few decades ago. It was up until now not even worth it's original cover price but I froze it like Han Solo so now I think i can get a couple hundred

The worst part is the graded plastic boxes don't even look good.
>>
>>152986504
I used to buy a lot of grab bags at my local flea market. Got some fun goodies in there back in the day.
>>
I collect them because I like them :)
If something is worth more money I just save up for a while or buy one at a time while reading and rereading what I have in the series.
>>
I only collect comics I personally like.
>>
I collect comics to read them. Love digging in dollar boxes for obscure goodies, or just trash I can still gnaw my brain on.
>>
I wish it was easier to find pre-80s comics in the wild
I like reading Gold Key/Dell stuff, Silver Age comics, but they're usually only in the specialty shops or shows... or eBay of course

I collect mainly to read. I had a comic book shop out in the flea market that was still doing quarter bins. Unfortunately the dude who ran it decided to fuck himself over with his BEATUS medicine and well, you know....sad all around

I mainly do trades now (Epics, Finests, Compendiums, and regular TPBS) because I ran out of space for floppies (also just semi-recently got back my childhood comic book collection that sat in the rafters of my old house for 20 years getting eaten to death by rats. Honestly surprised anything survived)

My treasures are my various Fleetway/Quality and Eagle Dredd books and my HTD by Gerber Omni
>>
>>152983287
Stuff I want to read. I tend to go for things that are older and haven't been reprinted, if it's mainstream stuff like DC, Marvel or most modern comics they have trades which for me is a better option for reading.
I am reorganizing them now actually. I need two boxes for Valiant now and Chaos takes up a whole box.
>>
I collect comics to read and enjoy. i have done it my entire life. When I was kid, I was only ever allowed the money for one issue (at an actual newsstand or the grocery store) and I always wanted to know more about all the comics and all the characters, so I would just buy whatever had the coolest covers. My childhood collection is all over the place in terms of issues, no rhyme or reason. No "collectors" value but priceless sentimentality. FWIW, I tended to gravitate to anything with Conan, Marvel GI Joe, Archie TMNT, Batman, Wolverine, Hulk (Joe Fixit era), The Thing and Beast & the X-Men.

My most "hardcore" period was college: peak Quesada-Bendis-Didio era of Marvel & DC. Looking back on that time period, I feel like a sucker who wasted a lot of money on comics I don't care to revisit.

My favorite feeling is finding that comic that is great to keep up with month to month. Reading Morrison's New X-Men and the Milligan/Allred X-Statix during high school was such a great time.

I have a huge collection of floppies and trades. I feel very anxious about storage space and money spent, so I have had to implement a lot of discipline about continuing the hobby. I loved the thrill of random dollar bin shopping for strange floppies but I just dont have the space for it anymore. I still collect trades but only used - I thrift hunt at flea markets, ebay searches, library sales, etc.

I have gotten back into buying new floppies over the last year-ish. DC and Image have built up a lot of hype, and I just want to enjoy that month to month excitement. I bounce around for characters or writers or artists, I use my spending as an endorsement of "more comics like this" - I'm digging Hulk, Moon Knight, Supergirl, Space Ghost, Spirit of the Shadows, D'Orc and more

Also its important to me to help keep local comic shops in business. Once they're gone, they're gone
>>
>>152983287

Both. I collect them but also sell sometimes. I also justify buying high dollar issues by believing I could at least sell it for near what I paid if I needed to. But I also have some that I have no interest in selling and I bought because I wanted them. I speculate on new releases sometimes. I added pic related to my pull this week and it's already going for around $45 on ebay. In this case I'll sometimes sell because it pays for the rest of my pulls. But I actually really like this cover and don't think I'm going to sell this one.
>>

Different guy here, but I recently managed to pick up a huge box of post crisis Superman comics for a decent price. Guy needed money fast so I got like 180 comics for a buck or so each.

>who's left on the comic side of the board.
I like animation but yes, I find the cartoon parts of /co more insufferable than not.

That said, I don't waste time or money collecting physical. I still pirate and I've spent tons of money on both digital subscriptions and actually 'owning' digital copies (and, yes, of course, I broke the coding and backed them up, do I read like an idiot?). I just haven't seen anything in a few years worth supporting with cash and have been spending that money on /co related merch, but not comic books.

I now own t-shirts, which even when I was a kid, I never owned, wore.

>I'm getting back into older single issues since there's a lot of good stuff that never got collected.
I agree but it's a waste of time and money, much of this has been scanned and while I do still go to the library and borrow physicals to read, and I do agree that going to an LCS (or bookstore) and cracking open and smelling that fresh book smell still brings something out in me, it's a waste of my time and money - personally - to do it.

If it brings you pleasure - or brings anyone else here pleasure, great. But the Direct Market and the way most LCS operate just continues in a downward spiral.
>>
>>152997868
>I find the cartoon parts of /co more insufferable than not.
There's just no filter with the cartoon fags. And it ends up spamming the board so no other discussion can take place because we needed yet another pointless simpsons quote or MY UNDERRATED WAIFU WHO IS JUST A CHARACTER WHO STOOD IN THE BACKGROUND OF ONE EPISODE!
>>
>>152983287
To read, 100%. I grew up reading floppies weekly so they're my favorite format, especially old back issues with fun ads. Reading them is nostalgic.
Trades are also good for reading, but omnis are too bulky to read comfortably. I have a few of them, but not too many.
People who buy as an "investment", especially those who slab their books, are cancer. Unless you've got something of exceptional historical value, like 'Tec #27 or Action #1 or AF #15, there's no reason to lock it away in hard plastic.
>>
>>152999058
I really don't get how slabbing took hold so much. Who are these people who think that can just decide things are now worth another 100 bucks.
>>
>>152999910
Non-readers looking to make a quick buck. The same kind of pond scum took hold in a lot of trading card games, too, and ruined them in the same exact way.

The pool of retards looking to get rich quick is a lot wider than that of actual comic buyers.
>>
I have a mind to just take one of my crappiest books and sending it off to be graded just to see what will happen.

>>152983287
I've never bought a comic for a speculative sale reason, frankly there are no comics that have come out while I've been alive that would actually make me any tangible money on resale, and even if they did the return would be mere hundreds of dollars over decades, a terrible return. I collect now, I still have all my childhood comics too, but there was a gap where I wasn't, and my chilld/teen books are only in okay shape and very rarely are they the full run of anything.

I like collecting now, but it's for fun, and I enjoy reading them more than anything.

PAD's Hulk 368 and Catalan's Ranxerox in America.

Excalibur is probably one of my favorite comics of all time. Really wish the Epic Collections were better in print. I mean you'd think they would be considering they're X-Book adjacent
>>
>>153007899
I’ve heard nothing but good things, yet I can’t help but think “the author’s (very) poorly disguised fetish” every time I look at a cover. #2 is especially peeving me off, I’m not going to put that shit on my shelf. Reading the graphic novel did not dissuade me from my first impressions.

Is the rest of the series that… blatant? Or am I just getting unlucky with first impressions? I’ve heard nothing but good things otherwise, and I do like Kitty and Nightcrawler (+ Meggan’s concept is interesting, and I’ve always liked the idea of Braddock and his weird multiversal police), so I’m still giving it a chance… I’m just very suspicious. Of Claremont especially.

On a vaguely-related note: does anyone know how to fix broken covers? Excalibur #1’s is pretty much falling apart. It is still very slightly attached to the comic inside (which, oddly, is in great condition), but it’s attached to the interior the same way a flat tortilla is technically attached to the contents of its prospective burrito.

>Do you collect comics for the value or to read them?

Neither really. I do buy comics, but when I do, it's quite literally just to HAVE them. I don't give a fuck about value, I never intend to sell them. I just put them in my shelf and never touch them after that. I read all my comics on my PC so the shelf copies are quite literally just for being on the shelf.

Yes, I do realize that sounds somewhat unhinged, thanks for asking.
>>
>>152983287
Most of the comics I own are runs I enjoyed. The rest are issues that hold some value so I'm holding onto them. The rest, I pruned and fed to the local landfill.
>>
>>152983652
New or not, this is the way. Fuck speculative buying to resell, buy the stuff that you actually enjoyed reading. Means you support what you enjoyed and you save on space. Though if you enjoy reading physical, just buy TPB or collections, they store much better
>>

Yeah I have the whole 90s series and then the Claremont series. I stopped there. My favorite run is Warren's, I wouldn't undersell its sexiness though, don't forget Ed benes drew most of that.

Excalibur is a bit more lighter in tone overall than say the other X-books. There is still drama, but it's heavily filtered

I really like Meggan the most, she's this shape-changing mutant that Captain Britain fell in love with and she's terribly self-conscious. There is a bit of flirtation between her and Kurt, but I digress
>>
>>153015516

I recently got back into modern floppies, trying to "vote with my wallet" to support some titles, although I'm slightly regretting that. None of it's really about trying to flip it, but I guess it's for value or limited display on top of supporting writers/artists.

I've been a read the scan, buy the trade person for a while, until I realized shit gets cancelled so fast, so I was trying to do it right and preorder. I was trying to have fun and also get some ratio covers, maybe re-sell one day, but I'm too disinterested to put that kind of work into speculating. So, now I have more books than I can display for my own collection, and I doubt I'm going to get anything graded.

I don't have the patience to bin dive at any price anymore. Every shop or place makes me sit at their register while they price it out on eBay, so why bother? I also have a friend who will spend like 4+ hours digging for bargains to flip on Whatnot while I just stand there, so the fun's kinda gone.
>>
>>153015516
>>153016184

>>
>>153017649
I'd love to buy modern floppies to VOTE with my wallet but they're just too much. When you can get the trade of 4-5 issues for 11 bucks or so when it hits versus the cost of floppies now it's just not viable.
>>
>>153017829
Yeah, you're not wrong. I was cutting a lot of other things out of my life at the time (booze, heavy foods), and needed at least something fun. I honestly enjoy putting a trade on my shelf more than floppies that sit in a box, but for a while, friends and I were out hunting silly variants instead of other more destructive things.

Considering that buying the floppies has seemed to change nothing in the lines I was hoping would get fixed, I'm probably back to the "pirate and buy trades" model in a month or so here.

You could restaple it if there's not too much damage. This kind of thing is generally not done since it harms the grade of the book but if you don't care about that that might work. If it was me I'd just leave it. It looks the same in the bag

What bothers me the most about my childhood comic book collection is that I had A TON of rare stuff in there and most of it got eaten alive for 20 years in the rafters of my old house

We're talking about issues of Spider-Ham, most of the Bongo Radioactive Man books, Valiant Nintendo Comics, and the first two issues of Futurama

Some survived, but not much

To read. Comics should be read. I can't stand people grading comics and dealing them up in a plastic case for it's monetary value.

I made the mistake of lending someone a comic once. He filled out a contest entry form and ripped the page out for a contest that was over a year prior.
>>
>>153025029
Just an issue with comics in general, the people most interested in getting into them tend to be kids. Unless you know the kid knows how to treat things right, they might just outright destroy the comic by ripping it apart
I keep some cheap comics that I don't mind being destroyed for this reason
>>
>>153025029
I hate when you lend people something in goodwill and they think they're entitled to fuck it up. Like when I got a yearbook in middle school and my friend thought he could put peas on his photo or this girl i didn't even know could rip a page.

I'm talking about kids, but lending between adults is just as treacherous.
>>
>>153026505
I once lent a kid my gameboy advance, he didn't give it back, my parents went over there to ask for it back and their parents insisted it was their kids.
I later found the kid playing on it while walking down the street, he runs away when he sees me and then throws it in a bush.
I manage to retrieve my gameboy and find that he had covered over my name (which was written on the back) with a load of marker pen to obscure it.
Total piece of shit parents to do that
>>
>>153027283
Yeah, kids can be shit, I used to bring my YuGiOh cards to school to play with other kids and I let a kid look through my cards to see what I had and he stole my shiny Raigeki. You little shit, I know you stole it because you were literally the only person to look through my cards that day. Couldn't get it back from him unfortunately because it's a card so instead I told the other kids that someone had stolen some of my cards. Everyone stopped bringing them to school because we're not allowed to show off our cool shit to other kids without someone being a thieving shithead
