why do people hate on Romita Jr? His style is so cool to me.
The horrendously pronounced cheekbones. When he tones that down its much better
>>152987152Almost every complaint about art has to do with faces. The artist can be amazing at composition, design, etc., but if his faces look a bit wonky or overly stylized, his art is considered AWFUL.
>>152987152Now post his most recent art.
>>152987213hes good only when he's not rushing
>>152987152real mystery
Because he was really good like 50 years ago, but has decayed horribly.
>Finally get Captain Universe by JRJr.>It's 30 years later.>It's also Knull.No, I lost.
>>152988185top kek
>>152987909What’s bad about this?
>>152987152I like his stylized art from the 70s to early 00s but you can see the degradation of his work as he gets older.
>>152988219Nothing. Just a style that will rub some people wrong intially because of it being quite blocky sometimes but that run alongside his Man Without Fear, Punisher, stuff, and his GR/Wolverine/Punisher crossover are the best examples of this new style he became stuck with. I like his 80's work probably as much as this style. It's just I would say that the inkers and colorists during JMS run basically went super high fidelity in the 2000's where this digital art actually elevated it to new heights. Not heights that surpassed the old ones, just heights that surpassed what was done with digital before and actually leveraged the new tools to create cool art.
>>152988474finally a fellow connoisseur
>>152988495Yeah. Digital coloring is basically what I think western comics just need to focus on sometimes and it seems they still focus on it but their artists have become lazy at the pencil level. Manga really goes hard sometimes with black and white in using digital to make super intricate art and create various styles. But digital is probably what allows western superheroes to have their distinction in having effects like those webs having light on them as well as the sign's light having its own effect. Stegman and Absolute Carnage was the last time I saw digital western art that wowed me in such a way. Too bad the guy really sucks badly at having good design taste. Jesus that Dark Carnage with Venom armor looked awful. And Hulk jobbing still gets me mad. Anyway, back to thread topic but John Romita just needs rest and to do cool commissions that are well thought out and good looking like his father did when he was older. Then we'd get cool shit like Cap Universe as that one anon said. I really don't get the Stockholm syndrome these oldheads have with Marvel as a company.
>>152988591was he any better at DC?
>>152988474This, I loved his work on Amazing Spiderman but goddamn everything else I've seen him on has been progressively more and more mediocre. He really was carried by the colorist and inker
>>152987152His Thor work was over 25 years ago, it's his modern work that's a shell of his former self. I was trying to cope that it wasn't THAT bad until he just forgot how to draw Norman Osborn's hair.
Because he fell off. He's a legend and an awesome guy and his DD, X-Men, Punisher and more was amazing for decades, but the last couple have been rough.
Kirtiki syndrome
>>152988695That’s not what that anon said at all.
>>152988695Well yeah but I wouldn't say he was carried back then. It's just these modern ones are >>152988686I think some part of his time at DC was that one magazine format Superman that was put out and that was one of the first major breaking points where you could see his style degrading. His work during BND and even World War Hulk was kinda...mid or bad looking sometimes.
>>152987152I think he's like Frank Miller where it's a colorist being incompatible problem
>>152987152His art in How to Draw Comics the Marvel way SUCKS.
when was his "prime" exactly?
>>152990087What art did he do in that book?
Modern coloring doesn’t compliment him as well I think is the main issue.Love him though
>>152988591Does JrJr do commissions? I’d love someone from the Legion of Superheroes from him
>>152990667Late 80s/early 90s.
>>152987989Someone claimed in a previous thread his decline was due to mangling his arm in a weightlifting accident
>>152989868Miller peaked in the late 80s/early 90s and it was a steady downhill until about the early 00s, in which he got a lot shittier. His recent art is just indefensibly horrible. He was great at one point, but come on, man.
>>152987152He got a worse over time and modern coloring and inking doesn't fit him very well. Still in his prime he was one of my favorite marvel artists, especially for Spider-man and Punisher and Daredevil.
He is terrible at doing fight scenesalmost all of them are just two motherfuckers just slamming and pushing against each other
>>152987152Love is X Men work
>>152993106Same here, also in Hulk.
>>152993055Thats how fights tend to be. JRJR is a New York guinea who's fought people IRL, Japs don't have real fights so all they know is fancy choreography.
>>152993837if I wanted irl accurate fight scenes I would watch, idk, fucking ufc instead of reading comicsalso these are fucking superhumans with extraordinary powers that aren't limited to punching and showing, yet it is almost exclusively how Romita draws EVERY fight regardless of powersets
>>152987213This actually happens alot. Squirrel Girls solo comic artist is great at paneling and such but since the faces suck ass its ugly to look at no matter if everything else is fine.
>>152993960His JMS Spidey stuff is better than you'd think then because there is a bit more variety, with that one spread of him fighting Morlun or that spread in 500. Yeah maybe not too much more than what you're describing but if somebody like Roger Stern is able to get good stuff out of him, then western comic writers need to care about action again.
>>152987152He was never that great, and now he's bad.
