So what did you think of the films? I hear they are basically 'Rudy' and 'Avatar' for kids.
>>

Which film best capture the Asian woman experience: Turning Red, Elemental or Hoppers?

The left looks like a shitty Illumination movie but with hideous designs instead of hyper focus-tested designs

The right looks like yet another aimless late-Pixar movie with no hook and no teeth

Are standards just that low? These are bad and mediocre. I dont like the messages or humor they try. I know they are family films but they barley feel like they are attempting to entertain a family. Merely distract the family.

I like Hoppers, but it did feel like it played things too safe thematically. I also didn't find the animal designs all that interesting. The lizard in particular felt as pointless and uninspired as I'd originally expected.

Goat was really fun if a little generic with its under-dog story. I'm sad that one kind of fell under the radar, but that can probably be explained by there being so little overlap between sports fans and animation fans.
>>
>>153007265
gross out humour in the trailers also didnt help, no one wants to see inhaled farts on a huge ass screen

GOAT made no sense to me until I remembered it was Sony and their executives are the dumbest twats on the planet.

Hey kids! Want to watch a movie full of ugly characters? It's about a sport you don't watch and starring a mid player on the verge of retirement! Don't you want to watch these hideous beasts be mean to each other and throw a ball?

What? Huh? K-pop what?

Sure, but it's immediately obvious that the GOAT artists were not going for a purposely-ugly style. They thought they were making something visually appealing.
Rango's designs are intentionally ugly because it reinforces the gritty filthy western aesthetic and themes of extreme poverty and need.
>>
You know what? Fine. Fuck it. I've got nothing better to do than watch both.

I didn't see GOAT, but my family wanted to watch Hoppers online.
It was a neat concept, but the biggest problem is the main character's personality.
>grandmother teaches Mabel to listen to the environment rather than blindly act out, but she constantly shouts and stomps her way into getting whatever she wants
>Mayor is also expected to listen to the town's inhabitants, including the animals, but he just shouts and doubles down on his project
>when the two compromise at the end, it's only under the duress of an hyper-violent animal revolution resulting from their brashness, not because they learned to listen to one another (Mabel and many others value the environment, Mayor and many others value the freeway)
It could have been a decent lesson about stakeholder communication.

Alright I'm sitting down to watch Goat first.
I'm immediately struck by how intensely shallow our protagonist's desires are, it's starting off with a big hill to climb. If I wanted to give the movie no credit at all I might even call the assumed and implicit connection to basketball racist.
>>
>>153011851
Just gonna use this post as a running tab for my thoughts

- Dude is practicing and just sunk every shot from all over the court, nothing but net, while leaping a hundred feet in the air. Why is he not already in sports? I get that he's small but that doesn't really matter if you can leap over the entire court. I can buy some random bullies going SMALLS CAN'T BALL HURRR but not an organized league
- Why is Will having trouble paying rent? He's got a job that he's apparently good at. I know DA RULES say the protagonist has to be on his ass but nothing they're establishing has any cohesion.
- Holy shit the horse trotting around the cage while talking trash is gay as fuck. That nigga ZESTY. I cackled but somehow I don't think that's supposed to be that funny.
- WIll puts his rent money on a 1v1 with the current best player in the league because....he's fucking retarded? That scene would make way more sense if it were the bear bully pushing him, he'd have a reasonable belief that he could win, and if the "small" prejudice is really the issue it would have just a much viral potential without needing Will to somehow be good enough to fuck up this league player
- The way Jett reacted makes her seem like she's racist specifically against goats
- Did Will not ever realize that he might get injured playing ball? Really?
- They keep implying he's never gonna play, but there are only 6 people on the team. The chances that absolutely no one gets injured or tired and needs relief is zero.
>>
>>153012613
- Will continuously puts on such insane displays with full court three-pointers that Jett and the coach not giving him a shot beggars belief.
- Every time Nick Kroll speaks I want to rip my ears off
- This diss track is fucking awful. Nigga rhymed baa with baa and you with you. Embarrassing.
- Oh man, someone finally fouled for the first time in FOUR GAMES time for goat to play!
- Wow! Crazy! Someone capable of sinking threes from full court is useful! What a shock!
- Jett's mad despite getting exactly what she wanted because RACIST

God I can't believe I'm only halfway through I gotta take a fuckin' break.
>>
>>153012814
- this whole promo scene could be cut and nothing would change
- I'm confused, did Jett not realize she still had fans? This is honestly the scene that's worked the best for me so far but it's too sudden and too easy. Being an insane shooter and keeping them alive didn't earn him any respect but his friends kissing her ass did?
- Oh shit, at 80 minutes in we FINALLY get some fucking pathos for Will. You know when it would've been cool to see him struggling with losing his mom and diving deep into roarball to cope? THE START OF THE FUCKIN' MOVIE.
- I guess fifteen years of being a cunt was broken down by fifteen minutes of pie. It has to happen, it's the necessary plot beat, but the character is so shallow and turns around so fast that it feels forced.
-This Patton Oswalt-led montage is actually good. No notes.
>>
>>153012613
Modern childrens films make me question a lot of things too
I never asked why sleeping beauty is asleep in her story but show me something like Coco and I'm asking why the villain exists when the antagonist, and conflict, is entirely the mother and great(?) grandmother being abusive and controlling
>>
>>153014191
- Ok, so the warthog is selling the team....now? Midseason? While in the playoffs? And is also getting rid of all the players that just...you know...made the playoffs? Including their biggest and most popular player? Even if all she cares about is money the whole value of the team is in Jett and Goat and the run they're on, not the literal name The Thorns. If you cut that short and relocate the team you've destroyed all the value. This doesn't make any sense from anyone's perspective. Other things have been bad but this is absolutely 100% maximum-strength contrived.
- THIRD ACT FALLING OUT SOOOOONG~ IT'S A THIRD ACT FALLING OUT SOOOOOONG~
>>
>>152998853
>Let's make movies targeting two things people have intense fatigue over
>>
>>153014363
- Well that may have been the fastest make-up I've ever seen. Will acted like a little bitch for all of five seconds and then everything was cool again.
- I'm confused about the rules of this game. Goal tending seems to be a thing and it's ok to body block someone going for a dunk, but it's also ok to fucking flying knee them in the face?
- Mane literally just threw a haymaker at another player that didn't have the ball with no foul called, can they just kick each other's asses? Is this bloodsport? Is the right move for Will to gore Mane with his horns?
- Ok yes, they are literally just brawling on the court. All of them. Everyone. Which leads to a single ejection.
- Good victory scene, could've been better set up but it worked.
- This speech Will is giving about his hometown doesn't track. It fits the diner, but everyone else was giving him a raw deal before he got famous.
- lol the contrived problem is solved by a contrived and nonsensical solution. Thanks Nick Kroll!

I will give this movie one thing: the artists REALLY tried. I don't know if they succeeded, but they obviously cared a lot about how this movie looked and about having very dynamic editing and effects. They also put some effort into making a world that feels like animals live in it. Nowhere near the effort Zootopia went to, but they deserve praise for not going full Sing.

The script is fucking bad, y'all. Paper-thin characters and instant arcs, contrivance on contrivance on contrivance, a lack of strong themes or cohesion, it reeks of the attitude that "kids don't care so who gives a shit"

I don't think I have the fortitude to watch Hoppers after that. Tomorrow.

Also somewhat with this anon here >>153007374, the farting rhino kids did not help this movie because at times that'd be the only thing I see people talking about.
It's like Disney's Lion Guard (a show meant for younger audiences, but actually tackles themes like death), but you wouldn't know that because the one scene that gets passed around is one of the main characters having a "fart off" with a girl he likes.

I pirated Hoppers. It's basically that movie about the robot that was trying to teach the goose to fly, but much worse and all over the place.

Scratchpad time.
- It's funny how bad these adults are at subduing a tiny child they already knew was going to be a problem
- Awww Turtle is so saaaaaad because of its temperature controlled life where its every need is fulfilled! It needs to run free in the grass outside of the school before getting hit by a car or toasting on the pavement!
- Wait, is she 12? She looks 7. 12 is too old to be jailbreaking turtles and biting niggas.
- Good little montage! We're doing the leg work that Goat refused to do, establishing exactly WHY our protagonist cares about the things and people they care about.
- Immediately declaring the personal stakes You'll always have this glade....BAM SWOOSH LOCK BELTWAY. Very effective.
- This adult man's familiar relationship with this very young girl is immediately uncomfortable to me.
- "I'm 19!" I'm sorry WHAT!? No. No no no no no this is not one of my Japanese animes Pixar what the fuck are you doing this girl looks 13 please stop
- Professor trying very hard to tell this girl she needs to move on with her life and her plan is dumb and if the end of the movie isn't her seeing the animals in a new place and accepting the loss of the glade that dialogue should not exist
- This chasing-the-beaver horror scene feels like a remnant of a previous draft, our protag is already a student this professor has a personal interest in
- "I DON'T UNDERSTAND THINGS" "THIS INTO THIS" oh god please let it end
>>
>>153026665
Bruh, it feels like you'd rather be making jokes and nitpicking than giving your actual thoughts about the films.
>>
>>153026665
- Professor waddling up to the Beavers in her crappy suit was genuinely funny.
- Don't lampshade that it's "like Avatar." Don't do it. You cheapen and date your entire movie.
- These old ladies just had two huge racks of equipment fall on them. They are dead. Tanaka killed them.
- Why did you put a button on the head of the robot that shuts off all communications. That seems like a bad idea on many different levels. What problem was this button solving?
- Pond rules and Connor just being in the bird to cheer prof up got more laughs
- Nobody ever noticed these animals Jazzercizing in the open?
- Hey maybe we don't make bestiality jokes in the disney kids movie
- Muted the funny noises scene.
- Ok great, they found the illegal tree driving away the animals, now they just need to document it and shut it down and they can probably convince the state to revoke the license
- Second needle drop that does not at all fit

So far this script is infinitely better even if most of the gags aren't landing

>>153026726
These are my thoughts. I can't give an overall impression when I haven't finished watching the movie. If I don't point out something was particularly good or bad then it was fine.
>>
>>153007265
I agree on Hopper's animal designs. The art direction overall was kind of bland. I'm not sure why it's trailer was criticized for ripping off Spider-verse or Turning Red, Hopper's looks completely generic and inoffensive. If I had to critique it, I think the pacing was really fast and might have benefited from an additional 5-10 minutes of length for breathing room. I also think Mabel should have gotten a few more scenes with Dr. Sam to build up their bond as something meaningful so that Dr. Sam could be there for her at her graduation as it's implied Mabel didn't have anyone to celebrate with. They should have completely cut Mabel's parents from the film and made her raised solely by her grandmother. She should have gotten a final goodbye scene with George in her Hopper suit before the beaverbot got scrapped. There were opportunities there to make it more emotional.

I'm just sad she had no one to celebrate her graduation with.
>>
>>153026918
- They re-blew the dam without permits and such, it's not a big deal but some lip service to the idea that they have the evidence they need to shut down construction would help reinforce that Mabel is making bad decisions and getting in too deep
- The royal entrances were great. First visuals to really pop out at me.
- Race war? We starting a race war? Big ol' race war? Jerry assassination? I like where this is headed.
- Flap around and find out got me. I'm ashamed.
- REGICIDE! YES! RACE WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR
- The robot goose Star Fox'ing into the cliff was great.
- An epiphany with clear setup all? A proper character arc happening? I don't want to speak too soon boys but we might have an actual script!

- Jerry immediately accepting the situation with the animals and being scared shitless is an incredibly appropriate reaction
- SKY SHAAAAAAAAAAARK
- That chase was great, very dynamic
- Jerry's really gonna triple down on this beltway after a fucking sky shark attack?
- ...how did the animals communicate to the scientists that they wanted a human body?
- I'm much more willing to forgive bad biology in this movie than GOAT so this is just a nitpick, but commercial speakers for a rally hitting 180db isn't gonna happen.
- George hates you now because you lied! It's not a third act misunderstanding SONG but it is still contrived.
- Jerry STILL wants the beltway? Motherfucker have a sense of self-preservation.
- In retrospect the professors probably shouldn't have filled all their robots with nitroglycerin. Hoo boy those puppies EXPLODE.
- Tanaka and the animals demolish their own dam to save the city, everyone gets a little scene of them helping as all the themes of the movie come back around in a nice neat little bow. Excellent. Very well done.
- Ending on the fakeout with the beaver and the phone like he was gonna talk was a solid gag.

Good movie! Not great, not standout, I probably won't rewatch it, but it is a highly competent movie made by highly competent people with no glaring flaws or failures. Very good script, perfectly fine visuals and designs, a couple of funny bits sprinkled in there, timing and direction and editing were all good, a solid 6.5 to 7 out of 10. It did its job.

Between the two movies it's abundantly clear to me that Hoppers is in a different league. Goat had a more memorable visual style but frankly I didn't enjoy seeing it in motion as much as the far less visually-ambitious Hoppers. In every other aspect it's not even a question of taste; script, direction, music, gags, holistic enjoyment, Hoppers wins. It's a blowout.

TL;DR: Goat sucked ass. Hoppers was fine.

The bestiality angle for one

I didn't watch them. They both looked like shit.

What recent animated films HAVE appealed to you, then?

NTA but in the last 4 years not a single animated feature has looked worth seeing.

I think you'd enjoy Flow, GDT's Pinocchio, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Oh, I did see Last Wish. Very fun movie, Jack was a great villain.

I know Flow is supposed to be amazing I just need to get around to it

I loved Flow right up until the ending, which fell flat for me. Like "That's it? That's how you're gonna end things?" Pic related.

It's a good movie overall though.
