The writers need to enforce that Richard is a good father and they do that by creating a scenario where the kids become maniacal gremlin tyrants right after Nicole starts to doubt his parenting skills.
The disdain of the episode comes from the belief that it is contrived nonsense because Richard never rarely does any sort of good parenting on screen prior.
