Why did this work when so many other race swap casting are utter dogshit?
>>153015654Kingpin needs to be big and imposing. Michael Clark Duncan fulfilled that to a T. Hell, Roscoe Lee Brown voiced the perfect Kingpin in the 90s show because his performance carried the right blend of menace and posh.
>>153015654Because Michael Clarke Duncan had both the genuine charisma and acting ability to pull it off.
>>153015654because no one cares about the 2003 Daredevil movie
Did it? That movie wasn't very good
>>153015654because he looks like someone who could crush someones skull with his hands. >>153015780you are thinking of elektra
>>153015654Because most race swaps don't bother trying to keep the character recognizable They just get someone else and pretend it's themIf you actually drew Kingpin but black, he'd genuinely look like this
>>153015654>Why did this workSays who?I didn't like it.I did like Michael Clarke Duncan, though. He was a great Kilowog. Died way too soon.
>>153015654
>>153015999"i dont feel so good"
>>153015654Because Michael Clark Duncan is an imposing and charismatic motherfucker, if anyone could play a black Kingpin it’d be him.
>>153015703>>153015711This. But he should be the exception not the rule. Wish they could have hired him to play Barracuda in a Punisher show or movie.
>>153015999Giganigga 9000
>>153015654Because it's the actor that adapts to fit and resemble the character, not the other way around.
>>153015654They did it because the actor was great not to pat themselves on the back.
>>153015654Nobody complains when it's done well. In fact most of the time nobody would know it's a race swap until they hear that it is.
>>153015654Way better than D'Onofrio.
>>153015808This. Because he has the character's silhouette and physical traits. You could also say Kingpin being bald helps race swapping him easier. The problem with blackwashing characters is that they don't resemble the original's physical traits. Johnny Storm is known for being blonde, you can't really do that with blacks without altering completely. But, you can actually raceswap Reed but keep his physical traits. It's just blondes and redheads are hard to raceswap without altering the look completely.Fucking hell look at Snape and NuSnape, long silky hair doesn't work on black people so they gave him dreadlocks which end up altering his looks no matter how they try to make him as close as possible.
>>153015654No hair to invoke the ginger curse
>>153018449The bigger issue with NuSnape is the outfit.
>>153015654Most people don't actually care about race-swapping so long as the performance is good. The problem is 9 times out of 10 the studio just picks the first marketable colored face they find for a role and they end up sucking.
the man can act.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbCJK1-yhnk
>>153018616Not really. Race-swapping is part of a long list of disrespect for the comic book-reading audience. I doubt most of the people critical of Sandman's Death being race-swapped gave a lick about her acting chops. I know I didn't. It's a big fuck you to the readers, as well as an easy way to generate a commotion and further condemn and mock the already disrespected readership. Michael Clarke Duncan was likeable, though. Maybe it's just about charisma and presence.
>>153018939He is charismatic, that's necessary for villain.
>>153015654Cause he fit the character. Race swaps can work when they're done in a way that doesn't alter the character. Comparing it to a /v/ and /a/ race swap. In the Resident Evil show, the race swap for Wesker doesn't work cause Wesker is physically a fit white blonde man obsessed with genetic perfection, it doesn't work in a situation like the RE show where he's suddenly a bald black man. The race swap in the live action Death Note doesn't work cause L is supposed to look like a disheveled scrawny ghoul, which is easy to tell when it's a pale Japanese-white guy with greasy hair and not a black guy that looks like a background character in any suburban media. Kingpin's race swap works cause Kingpin's physical description is a large bald dude in a suit, Michael Clark Duncan fits as a large bald dude and wears a suit well. It doesn't matter if Kingpin is white black or asian, so long as he's still physically large and formal. Compare Duncan to Kingpin, and everything but his skin matches, compare live action Wesker to video game Wesker, and you can barely see a resemblance, compare live action L to anime L, and it's an entirely different person you'd have to be blind to see any similarities.>>153018939Sandman is also a good point. Death is a marble white girl in every appearance, which is part of her aesthetic.
>>153018449>Johnny Storm is known for being blondeLol. Such a dumb take.
>>153015654This might blow your mind but casting is difficult and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. The fact is that too many people here are just obsessed with superficial visuals and don’t give a rat’s ass about the actual performances. Just compare how much they meltdown simply because something doesn’t look exactly like the comics but don’t spend even 1% of that energy to complain if the actor is boring or gives a bland depiction of the character. That is why people always begrudgingly have to admit they like MCD because he gave such a great performance that the usual whining makes them look stupid due to how universally liked his acting in Daredevil was. It’s also a fact that as long the skin colour is white these people ignore tons of changes because that is how deep their “fandom” actually is. It’s also the case that everyone here is super biased simply because they know the source material and are obsessed with being “faithful”. That’s why it’s so hilarious how much they get embarrassed or start doing mental gymnastics when you start pointing out all the changes and alterations about stuff they liked where they weren’t familiar with the source material and thus unwittingly just enjoyed it without built in bias.
>>153015654It worked to the extent that it did because every other attribute of his matches the Kingpin. He is strong, big, intimidating, bald, yet comes across more intelligent and gentlemanly than petty and thuggish. Someone with all the exact same attributes but white would've been even better, and personally I think D'Onofrio's Kingpin is still better.
>>153018449>Johnny Storm is known for being blondeHey look it’s Johnny Storm! Remember how this didn’t ever get as much impotent rage unlike the mere idea that MBJ was going to play him
>>153018616People here make up their minds the second they hear about casting and don’t even want to give it a chance. Normal people don’t care.
>>153015654In those days there was no "race swap" like there is today; a Black actor would play a white character and the character would remain white in the original canon. They were chosen because they had talent, not for political purposes.
>>153018449You're not wrong, but you argues that in the most retarded way possible.
>>153019076Ordinary people don't know comic book characters, they only know them from movies.
>>153019055This actor is blond...
>>153018918He was the best part of this movie
>>153015703>>153015711This. >>153015780I loved the 2003 Daredevil movie. I mean it's kinda stupid, but a fun movie. Even Colin Farrell's Bullseye was pretty cool. Him killing the guy in the Irish pub while House of Pain plays. Classic.
>>153019113https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yusuti6QEBoGoes hard for Irish American kids in middle school.
>>153019094Chris’s normal hair is brown, he dyed it for Captain America. In Fantastic Four he never dyed it. That why it’s short, almost a buzz cut in the first one and still brown while In the second FF movie it was maybe slightly lighter in colour but never truly blonde like Johnny in comics is.
People always try to hide their racism behind “I ACTUALLY CARE, I AM THE REAL FAN HERE” bullshit but they never give a flying fuck when for example Lois Lane switches from having red, black or brown hair. Or how Wolverine is never as short as he’s supposed to be. Or how Two-Face in the Dark Knight was a blonde. Or how much Ma and Pa Kent change in appearance from one live action adaptation to the next but almost never wear glasses or have completely white hair.
>>153019010I mean anon take a look at Michael B Jordan and can you really tell he's Johnny Storm? Granted they can just have Johnny be brunette and shit but it still applies.
>>153019192Can you tell from five different blonde haired people who is Johnny Storm? No, you fucking can’t.
>>153019182Speak for yourself, tall Wolverine still irks me.
>>153019275hugh jackman is tom cruise height
>>153015711/thread
>>153019203Sure, but if they cast a blonde or a fucking asian who can pull off Johnny, it'd be fine. If they want to make Johnny black, make Sue Black, but problem is Sue is also notable through her blonde hair which is why they had to cast a white woman no matter what. I wouldn't mind a black Reed.
>>153019316He's 6'2'' according to Google, even allowing for how actors sometimes add an inch or two, he's definitely over 6 foot.
>>153015654No social media so people pretending to be comic book fans couldn't bitch about it
>>153019156Okay, but he looks blond. It's obvious why people didn't complain about him and complained about Michael B. Jordan instead.
>>153019694>but he looks blondHe looks white, you mean.
>>153019390>but problem is SueIt is not a problem when in that movie specifically they just made her be adopted.
>>153019182Hair color is the least important thing about those characters, whereas the Human Torch is blond and that's an important element of the character.
>>153019702No, I meant what I meant, don't try to twist my words.
>>153015654He looks and sounds like the character except black. Also he's not in it that much and people weren't completely sick of it at the time.
>>153019709>Hair colour isn’t important>Except it arbitrarily is when I say sotThere is no real importance on Johnny being blonde
>>153019713What you’re doing is projecting blondness to him because he’s white and you’ve seen him as a blonde.
>>153015654>Why did this work when so many other race swap casting are utter dogshit?
;
>>153015654He had the correct physical presence and the acting skills to make it work.
Watching the Netflix daredevil show for the first time. Up to season 3. I fucking hate the dude they got to play kingpin. It sounds like he’s whispering every line. Also every line he utters is cringe and drags on too long. Also I hate Elektra. Bitch sounds just as annoying and her story with the hand makes no fucking sense. Everyone else is fine though. Punisher season 1 was also good.
>>153015654These two>>153015703>>153015711as well as the simple fact that Kingpin is a Z-list character and no one really gives much of a fuck if he's comic accurate or not.
>>153015654It’s honestly just nostalgia. If they tried to pull something like that today, chuds would lose their minds immediately.
>no one pointing out that it was literally a different time when race swapping wasn’t often pushed as part of an agenda
>>153015654Daredevil was always a c lister at bestThe movie was seen as pretty much shit even before negro Kingpin was announcedThe reason it 'worked' was because Kingpin wasn't 'a negro first, the character second' like 99% of raceswaps when they remove White people for negros. And more importantly, it wasn't a comic book movie. It was an action movie based on comic books which is completely different so Bullseye being Irish, Kingpin being a negro, etc didn't matter since fans of the comics didn't see it
>>153018939>a long list of disrespect for the comic book-reading audienceOh fuck off. People disrespect "the comic book-reading audience" because it tries to take itself too goddamned seriously.
>>153015654It didn't workPeople hated KANGPin back thenIt's just that movie was so dogshit, it didn't really drum up much drama outside of Internet forums
>>153020628They did it a lot. Shawshank Redemption, Out of Sight, I Am Legend, the motherfucking Whiz, Manchurian Candidate remake, etc. But because there wasn’t an internet and social media in its current form you didn’t have endless manbaby tirades about it everywhere telling you to get angry.
>>15302107441% already.
>>153021074>there wasn’t an internet and social media in its current formimdb forums started in the late 90s and laid the foundations for everything /pol/ and /tv/ are today.
