I used to really like collecting comic trading cards. Had the entirety of the first 3 or 4 x-men sets, some of the thicker marvel painted ones and a whole mess of others. Anyone else? They were all the rage in my school.

i got autistic and got a huge twitch when anything like my wimpy kid books fold even a bit so i switched to electronic only after being having an already huge collection of Shrek, Pokemon and Ben 10 ones
>>

Looks like they're still doing them, but why? Almost no one cares. The new Marvel ones look kind of lame. Pushing boring new shit and also synergy

well there were a lot of fun when I was a kid. I don't know what's popular now. But near as I know they still make sport cards so the audience exists.

I could never get into collecting cards when I was a kid, I wanted to but it was difficult for many reasons. Now it's too late. I'm envious anon, did you sell them?
>>
>>153018998
It's fun if you had a lot of friends or people you could actually trade with. Ya end up talking to people you never thought you might if they have a card you want and are looking to swap.
>did you sell them?
I'm honestly not sure what happened to them. Unless my parents got rid of them they could very well still be in a box in their attic somewhere. I'm going there later this week I may have to rummage through.

Shrek... trading cards... ?
>>
>>153017126
I just found out a few weeks ago there are x-men 97 ones but they're not good

My father-in-law is an old trading card designer. He is insanely gifted. We were in a comic shop together years ago and I asked him what it would cost to create a new set today. I will never forget his answer…“We can’t, we forgot how to do it.”
>>
>>153017126
They still make them but like most trading cards they are overpriced filled with endless chase and variant cards and so forth that make it impossible to collect unless you are wealthy

Stickers technically but have the same feeling

I was gonna say if they were made by third parties, it could actually be made with soul and for actual fans like that TMNT recent game, but guess we can't have too many nice things anymore.

Man that sucks

to be serious with you, the cards and the cartoons were what introduced a lot of kids to the comic characters. it made kids comfortable to start buying the comics since they had an idea where to start. there were no movies at this time of course, so in the early 90s these cards made marvel look important. by infiltrating other markets, such as cards and tv, marvel managed to stay in the game and get ahead. without them I think marvel would have had a lot more trouble crossing over

Yeah, that's a major plus too. You'd get a card of some random character, there'd be a small blurb on the back with their info and maybe an issue for reference and you'd be up to speed.

They did their own card game but I think with that failing they’re just licensing out to magic the gathering

its funny, looking back, at how fresh and exciting the marvel sets of the early 90s were. Series 2, the X-Men cards, Masterworks was mind blowing. Digital colors, fx, life-like painting. It was a truly heady time to be a kid as almost everyone was tuned into them and discussing them.

...And then there was DC. With this staid, sensible line. Classic, not in your face, a bit nostalgic. It was like they were still firmly planted in the 80s as Marvel ran away with the 90s. I was the only person I knew collecting them.

I had a good few of those. A local card shop near me had a binder that they were selling lose cards of, the image of row of the, then, three flashes is vivid in my mind.

I still have what I think is a complete set of the Marvel Masterpieces trading cards from 94 packed away somewhere. My mom would collect them for me when I was young. Still looks fantastic, I love the colors and dynamic poses.

Yeah those ones were cool. There was one set that actually had a blown up version where you'd get the art from the card at the size of a comic.
>>
i had a polaris card and the art was so bad kid me thought she was a 50 year old crossdresser
>>
i was able to convince a school friend to give me 5 or 6 binders of cards, 4 to 5 had these marvel ones full of em. her dad was going to sell em for crack.

sounds like a real piece of work
