The timeskips were Geoff Johns' fault, who became an exec halfway through S1 and demanded Weisman to use newer characters like Tim Drake or Bart Allen over "old ones" like Dick and Wally. It's why in later seasons the timeskips are smaller.

>>153020504>Greg: At some point halfway through production of season one, like we were going there was a big management change up at DC and Geoff Johns came in and we had to pitch the show to him even though we were, you know, halfway through the season already. And we sort of found a way to to position the show that season 1 was sort of like "this was the DC universe a few years ago" because Geoff really wanted it to be more current, like we were going with more classic characters like Dick Grayson as opposed to Tim Drake, and and Wally West as opposed to Impulse Bart Allen and he was like, "Well, but those aren't the current characters. We should be going with the current characters." We said, "well, we're going to do a five year time skip between season one and season two." And that really sold him. I mean, he was initially kind of going to say a little reluctant about it when he came aboard, but when we sort of pitched him this idea of, you know, we'll do this for season one, but then season two we're going to jump five years and we will bring in Tim Drake, and we will bring in Bart Allen, and we'll bring in Cassie Sandsmark, Wonder Girl, and all that stuff. And he got very much in our corner at that point. First it was like a history lesson of the DCU. It was kind of more of the modern depiction of the DCU.https://youtu.be/0kcikAx5tD4?si=y0t6OWWGCgvardQ2Now that Johns got kicked out of DC/Warner due to all the drama with 2017JL and James Gunn taking over you'll probably be hearing more stories about him like this one or the Greg Rucka one.
I only liked the first two season, the rest of the show made Ultimate Alien feel like high art
>>153020406timeskips are ok if well executed, but this wasn't. even the gradual context they provided (m'gann and conner's breakup, jason's death, why aqualad betrayed the team) was poorly done. five years is also too longrealistically, this show made way too many excuses why the justice league couldn't deal with the problems. them being used as a covert team in s1 made sense at times but in s2 the justice league were basically useless (oh they're all offworld attending some trial that is dragging out through the entire season, and hal is offworld too so we have no green lantern looking after earth, and hawkman is offworld too because his wife is on trial)also the villains were massively depowered. superboy (who himself has been nerfed - no tactile telekinesis or flight/heat vision/speed) going toe to toe with black adam? amazo only using one power at a time and having to boot up? ridiculousalso, realistically they did not need to add zatanna and rocket to the main cast, artemis was the last meaningful addition, and the end of s1 was relatively weak aside from the agendas episodeI still like the show though (s1 and some of s2)
>>153020550It literally says they were planning on doing a time skip before he came in.
>>153020550>or the Greg Rucka one.QRD?
>>153020406>>153020550The time skips were always going to happen, but the five-year one wasn’t supposed to happen until between seasons 2 and 3. We were supposed to get another season of the original team.
>>153021111Rucka complaining that Didio was bullying him, Johns basically didn't do anything to stop it.
>>153020550Making Black Manta the father of Aqualad was probably also GJ. I remember Weisman stating it: it was like watching a hostage statement.
>>153022515I remember feeling like there was some bad blood between Weisman and Johns there given Johns introduced "Jackson Hyde" in Brightest Day right before the YJ cartoon premiered and Weisman always disowned that version (not to mention his comics personality is nothing like the YJ one).
>>153022631I think it was more like the fact he had to incorporate the Black Manta backstory heavily into season 2 with Khaldur joining Manta.
>>153022515I remember there was some friction around Kaldur’s creation but I don’t recall that statement. And I don’t know if Weisman would oppose that plot point. I guess it’s redundant with Artemis and Conner both evil parents already, but Kaldur’s had a different approach so it didn’t feel repetitive.
>>153020406Oh great another reason to hate Johns. The fucker ruined She-Hulk in the 2000's.
>>153022631The one thing I like about Young Justice over the actual comics is that "Jackson Hyde" is such a dogshit, personality-less boring ass character.
I always wondered why Young Justice tanked so badly when Weisman had a pretty good prior track record. I should have known somebody was sticking their nose in.
>>153020406>>153020550Seemed dumb to call the show "Young Justice" and only have a single Young Justice member actually on it. They should have gone with Tim, Conner, Bart and Cassie from the beginning or just kept the original cast members and called it something else.
>>153024669adaptions are almost always gonna go with the already established big names. The 90s crew have a lot of capeshit baggage and circumstances around them. Conner and Tim can maybe get away with it (Tim mostly because Nightwing might be known enough) but Bart and Cass are somewhat difficult to just toss in from the start. The tone also wasn't very young justice either
>>153020406In the reluctant defense of Johns for once Young Justice comics WERE about those characters, it would be like if a show was called Teen Titans but was the Justice League as teens.
I like Greg but he doesn’t seem good at playing ball. I don’t think he left Marvel on good terms either, but I don’t blame him. Spider-Man editorial is awful.
>>153024669>>153025791>Seemed dumb to call the show "Young Justice" and only have a single Young Justice member actually on it.From what I recall, either WB Animation or Cartoon Network demanded the show to be called "Young Justice" because they had already done a show called "Teen Titans" that had ended only 3 years earlier.
>>153024618That doesn't explain Season 3 and Season 4 of YJ being not good.>>153026664It was also because the show was developed as a Junior Justice League type show and the suits naturally gravitated to Young Justice as a title despite the original show having no real relation to the YJ comic.
>>153022515really? i could've sworn there were hints even in S1 that Manta was always intended to be Aqualad's dad, something about how Kaldur was always so "dutiful" without questioning it, which kinda made it seem like Black Manta was personally offended by Kaldur's allegiance to Aquamanunless you're just saying that Johns' idea was always for Aqualad to be Black Manta's kid since he basically "introduced" him in comics, and Weisman just had to adapt that (though, would he? seems like the comic and show versions are already pretty different, and the show version despite coming out later was created first)
>>153020615S2 already kinda feels like the Ultimate Alien of the series. it just has a few good episodes and plots, but for the most part i couldn't be assed to care about The Reach or Impulse trying his hardest to bring back S1 Robin's "whelmed" talk. Mongul was badass though, and most of the stuff surrounding the OG group was cool
>>153027378Yeah, if Weisman (and Vietti) were unhappy about the process, I doubt it was the Black Manta connection. Maybe they just wanted the comics to wait on introducing him until he was more solidified instead of rushing a vaguely familiar version of him?
>>153020406>Geoff Johns' Not how possessive apostrophes work.
>>153025791>In the reluctant defense of Johns He's not gonna fuck youu
