Anime is in a bad spot in the US where all cartoon stuff is considered to be for kids and G rated.
Meanwhile if they attempt to edit the movie down to a PG or G rating, it ruins the only interest anime fans ever would have had and they don't bother too. So there is no main audience for anime movies in theaters in the US based on assumption of what demographic cartoons are for.
