She only knows tricks like Gen only knows bounty hunting, and she has been shown to care deeply about her friends and to refuse help even if she's in deep shit.

Another reason Kitsune gets so much flak here is the storytime goes through half a year to a year's worth of issues in one day mainline Tomoe hasn't shown up in 20 years. Kitsune shoes up somewhat often and it seems a lot more frequent to us than if we read it on release, which wears out her schtick faster.

Going back to a few threads ago, I did ask at the lunch table if anyone knew what "yokai" meant. The only person that did was the young gamer guy and he thought it meant "a ghost possessing an object" Demographics were mostly 20s and up Americans (one Mexican), tech company, somewhat nerdy but not deep into it. I'd say that for mainstream audiences, you'd still need to drop a hint about yokai.

To do the same with an Ishida or Sasuke story and they come across as dutiful. Even gen regularly gives away his bounties to orphans and such despite his miserly attitudes. Imagine if Gen kept repeating the persimmon tree shit every time he ran into Usagi, off loading all the danger onto him then trying to screw him out of his share of the cash. Now imagine if he did even worse than that but for some reason Usagi just kept justifying his shitty behavior with a catch phrase, not even getting him back tit-for-tat. He'd be intolerable without his sense of honor and the genuine friendship that develops.You cant just have a shitheel be part of the main cast and expect people to like them without some concessions. Some combination of they get their comeuppance regularly, they have some degree of honor, be somewhat sympathetic, develop away from it as a person, or be genuinely pretty goddamned cool in other respects. Kitsune is lacking in most of those because stan's daughters liked her.
