Mary sues are , by definition, newcomers in srablished series. If everything you do is right but you are the original protagonist, you arent a mary sue. The problem that created the term mary sue is that after an original character made the heavy lifting to make the series popular, a self insert of a new writer just came and was better than everyone.

Meanings change as language is descriptive not prescriptive. There was a time, and I’m talkingtime before the internet itself alongside dinosaurs and Coke 2 when Mary sue would have been insular to trekkies and so narrow in it’s meaning that it would have just meant female self-insert to an existing cast (usually trek) but that time has LOOOOONG passed. Mary sue is from the 70, and the world had been in need of a slang for all the traits that regularly congealed for sue-ism and so ‘Sue’ slides into place as the word for it all.
