How much of this could be attributed to closet case characters being inherently funnier or just the over all writing for the show was better in the past?
>>153075474making him a drag queen just because he's gay was stupid too
>>153075474Agree, for some stupid reason they went with the sympathetic angle. He'd make a great self-hating Roy Cohn evildoer type.
>>153075627Honestly yes, he should be spiteful
>>153075474I think both are true.
>>153075474he was funnier in the closet because if you like the gay, it puts him in a place of sympathy, and if your head's on straight and you don't, it puts him in a place of powerlessness without actually being harmed.
>>153075474The point of Simpsons is that Springfield is not a quaint little town. Everyone is dysfunctional. Apu sells stuff past expiration date, Krusty is a jaded husk of a man making a show for kids, Moe does shady shit when not tending to bar, lawyer Lionel Hutz and mayor Quimby go without saying etc. Smithers' homosexuality fit that world better as a dirty little secret that was part of the joke just like everyone else's vice.
I think Smithers was funnier when he was only obsessed with Burnsie
>>153075808you'd have to be pretty mindbroken to care if an adult man is gay in currentyear
>>153076039you'd have to be pretty brainwashed to think the year should influence your concernswe may have beaten back Polio but it would suck just as much to get it now.
>>153076233i don't have any 'concerns' grandpa
>>153076254how's that working out for you so far?
>>153075474Everything was funnier in the first 10 seasons.
>>153076329thisalso the thing about mr Burns having basically raised mr Smithers makes it all even more sad and disturbing
>>153075474He was funnier in the closet because he came out during zombie Simpsons era
>>153076233you are mindbroken to do this with your hobby board time
