Why were cartoons in the 90s and 2000s less of the stereotypical kids show compared to the 70s and 80s? There were a few in the 70s and 80s like Star Trek: The Animated Series, but most were the stereotypical show for kids.

>>153078579Like nobody would've argued about The Smurfs not being for kids. It absolutely was. Same with Shirt Tales and heck, even the 80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was seen as mainly a kids thing, at the very least the early seasons. Same with the Mario cartoons. Then once shows like Ren and Stimpy, Batman: TAS, Animaniacs, X-Men, Rocko, Hey Arnold, Angry Beavers, The Tick, Rugrats, Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, and Gargoyles came out, people started to think of many kids shows as not specifically for kids. This would continue with the 2000s including shows that started at the tail end of the 90s like Batman Beyond, SpongeBob, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed Edd n Eddy, Billy and Mandy, Justice League, Teen Titans, Invader Zim, Fairly OddParents, Foster's Home, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Proud Family, Kim Possible, Spectacular Spider-Man, and many, many more. Then in the 2010s, we had Dan Vs, Regular Show, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Gumball, Steven Universe, and that one Horse Show.

They saw the level of peril and violence in a typical adventure story as being everyday boys’ entertainment rather than something off limits to kids, because it was what they themselves had loved as children. Dealing with the business and the money that poured into kids TV in the 90s-2000s gradually changed the norm and culture.
