I'm honestly surprised at just how cynical, mean-spirited, and kind of naughty Nickelodeon was. Like, there were a lot of Rocko's Modern Life was quite cynical and had fights and arguing and characters doing awful things to others like when Heffer and Filburt filmed Rocko naked. Stimpy once forced Ren to always be happy which was a fucked up thing to do and Ren choked Stimpy. Many years later, there was Sam Puckett being an asshole to Freddie Benson.

Before the early Nicktoons era, lots of cartoons were pretty sanitized and safe, to the point that Nicktoons was marketed as like "THESE ARENT YOUR FUZZY LOVEY DOVEY CARTOONS, THESE TOONS HAVE ATTITUDE."

Also Rocko early on gets away with a LOT because they were like "Yeah make a cartoon with edge" and they had no real reference on what was too far lol.

Cartoon Network was also pretty mean-spirited and hateful too. Pretty much all of the Cartoon Network originals of the 90s and 2000s were full of episodes with assholes.

This is the third Rocko's Modern Life hate thread you made this week, Discovery Kids Fag. All of humanity wasted on a few schizos here on /co/.

Yes. This is what we mean by "it used to he good". You literally grew up on the real life version of pic related and now you're so sensitive you can't handle jokes.

Comedy is hateful and mean spirited.

and the cream of the crop when it comes to hate-filled Nicktoons was CatDog. Everyone or almost everyone was an asshole and even with a few heartwarming episodes like Brothers Day, it doesn't change the fact that Cat often manipulated his brother, Dog often dragged Cat onto the streets and hurt him, the Greaser Dogs bullied CatDog and beat them up, Rancid Rabbit was a scam artist and a scummy person, and Winslow loved making CatDogs life miserable. So many of the episodes ended on a downer note too.

but yeah, going back to Cartoon Network, one of the first shorts of Dexter's Laboratory literally had Dee Dee feeding Dexter mud, which was disgusting and quite cruel. Dee Dee stole Dexter's money just because Dexter is "so small and weak" that Dee Dee could.

There was also an episode of Camp Lazlo, done by the creator of Rocko, where Raj and Clam literally beat each other up all because Raj hated mustard and Clam hated buns.

So what kind of humor do you want to see that's "not mean spirited"? I contend such a thing just won't be a joke. If there is no juxtaposition between negative and positive then there's no punch line.
>Heffer and Phil try to be normal videographers
That's your positive
>they cant do it so they exploit their friend who walks around naked
Negative
>it ends up making him famous and people like it
Positive
It's not about it "being mean" it's about it switching between mean and nice. If it's all nice or all mean then there's no joke.

That was just how things were back in the 90s (IE the best time). Things have been pussified since then.

Pretty sure Craig of the Creek is classified as a comedy and it's one of the most wholesome cartoons out there. No, I'm not counting toddler shows because that would be too easy. When it comes to cartoons targeting older kids or teens or adults, Craig of the Creek is one of the most wholesome.

I just googled Craig if the creek and the very first piece of media put in my face is a joke humiliating this guy.
