Just numbers. It's the most-watched video on its channel so there was an audience for it, but that channel averages only about 500k views per video. Even if it got twice as many views at that (which it almost did) that's not enough for a cartoon pilot with its huge costs.OP should have worked on building up her channel for another year or so. Once she was averaging a million views per video, that's the time to start thinking about something like a cartoon pilot. With stuff like Hazbin and Digital Circus out there, you need big numbers fast to stand out in the indie animation space. Hell, the Homestuck pilot failed and it had more than twice as many views as Wastelandia in around the same amount of time. Only big hits stand a chance. They should have waited.

If Wastelandia made $1500 in ad revenue off this pilot, a finance vlogger might make $3-5k or more on a video the same length with the same views. In animation that could make the difference between producing another video or calling it quits. The bar for success in this niche is high as fuck and the revenue too low to keep trying again easily. Merch has upfront costs, so most people can’t use Glitch’s model. Wastelandia had plush preorders they had to refund because they couldn’t afford to produce it. Creators need a strategy beyond dropping a short and crossposting it if they want to make more and better cartoons.
Because it was boring. The entire pilot was 6 minutes of furries complaining about their lives and that's not fun to watch! If you want to make an interesting and entertaining slice of life cartoon you need to make the characters or situation entertaining. You can even keep the cringy internet dialogue as long as you actually put the characters in an entertaining situation
