But while Gatchaman would prefigure an animation boom, HB's realistic animation would devolve into works like the Superfirends whose animation resembles the early Tatsunoko experiments of the 60s.So while Japan was moving forward, sadly America was moving backwards. It's my feeling this need not have happened.

here's my favorite page from the Tatsunoko pro animation manual, showing the storyboard on the left, layouts for cut 1 and timesheet on the right.these were for Hippo and Thomas, which was plainly aimed at the western market, and hows how Tatsunoko's technical expertise was ramping up.It's interesting to compare this manual with the Filmation manual of about the same time. In many ways it's very similar, but with some striking differences.
