aka Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. How did this cartoon become so popular in the west? What are the chances the live-action movie will be good? How does it compare to Voltron?

i've been studying the history of animation and will talk about this because of the annoying sperg.
Gatchaman is important not just in the history of anime but probably (western) cartoons because it was the first (successful) attempt by Tatsunoko productions to do more "realistic" animation.
In that respect it's closer to Hannah-Barbera's 60s animations like Johnny Quest or the Fleischer Superman.
The first attempt at "realistic" animation was Speed Racer. MeTV Toons shows that every night now and I've been watching a lot. While the stories are quite good, they were plainly struggling to adapt to a new style.
what is that style and process that informed Gatchaman?
* almost completely abandon the use of "squash and stretch" the key stylistic feature of American animation to that point. That has remained an important feature of anime to this day.
* use of layouts. Although not commonly used at the time (they would not be extensively used until after1974's Heidi) Tatsunoko heavily used layouts and and an animation director to approve them.
* direction featuring more interesting, cinematic camera angles
Again I see s a parallel between the 60's HB series and Gatchaman. But while Gatchaman would prefigure an animation boom, HB's realistic animation would devolve into works like the Superfirends whose animation resembles the early Tatsunoko experiments of the 60s.
So while Japan was moving forward, sadly America was moving backwards. It's my feeling this need not have happened.

That's actually pretty cool. Where'd you read that at?
>>
>>153088120
just researching tatsunoko productions after watching late night MeTV toons (they also show marine boy and superfirends later). reading the wiki and other research.
The tatsunoko animation manual (animator training manual) is literally available on archive.org.
https://archive.org/details/animation-guide-tatsunoko
If you have basic japanese it's not even that difficult to read.
I've got quite a collection of japanese and western animation manuals now and am thinking of doing threads on them.

Very cool info. Yes, BotP was groundbreaking in many ways for both Japanese and western animation, and that's only one of the reasons it should be remembered and watched. It also started the Super Sentai craze that lead directly to Power Rangers and more.
More historical info here:

here's my favorite page from the Tatsunoko pro animation manual, showing the storyboard on the left, layouts for cut 1 and timesheet on the right.
these were for Hippo and Thomas, which was plainly aimed at the western market, and hows how Tatsunoko's technical expertise was ramping up.
It's interesting to compare this manual with the Filmation manual of about the same time. In many ways it's very similar, but with some striking differences.

This place is for WESTERN cartoons
>>
>>153088652
It's been explained to you a hundred times but you refuse to admit it. BotP was localized by westerners and aired on western stations for two decades. It's considered a western show. If it wasn't, mods would delete this thread. Your shitposting and trolling won't ever change that.
>>
>>153088652
the history of western and asian animation is intermingled, and Gatchaman is a prime example of that.
Topcraft did the Rankin Bass tv specials, and later became Studio Ghibli. The Ghibli movies themselves are plainly deeply influenced by western animation
and 90% of the cartoons in the catalog were animated in korea
If you loved cartoons plainly you wouldn't have such a myopic view.
also thanks for letting me bump the thread

You literally brought up the original anime from the start the thread
It's no different from the Space Ninja Golmes comparison
You're not trying to even bother to make a distinction between the two

>the history of western and asian animation is intermingled, and Gatchaman is a prime example of that.
That's like making a thread on /a/ about Disney movies overall solely on the basis that the old ones influenced Tezuka

>How did this cartoon become so popular in the west?
As a 80s "cartoon", Gatchaman has a cult following in the west, but its small compared to other franchises at that time. And just like other 80s properties it has stuck around to this day.
>BotP was on Toonami under the title G-Force
>A comic book series was released in the early 2000s
>Imagi Studios (TMNT, Astro Boy) announced a BotP movie, now known as Gatchaman, before getting cancelled
>Ken the Eagle was the poster boy for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
>That one Gatchaman spinoff was on Crunchyroll
>There's now a new line of Gatchaman comics.
>>
>>153090037
>BotP was on Toonami under the title G-Force
Pretty sure G-Force was a second dubbing attempt after BotP which ran closer to the original material. There was also Saban's attempt to adapt the sequel anime as "Eagle Riders".
>>
>>153089790
koreans will typically redraw the storyboards westerners provide because they're incompetent
but I agree with your main point: except for south park, all "western" animation is done in asia

What is the difference between the versions?
>>
>>153091987
Original JP Gatchaman:
>was all on Earth
>had more violence and death

Westernised US Battle of the Planets:
>added a space opera setting to bank off Star Wars
>less violence and more censorship (stun lasers vs killing lasers, military forces all robots and not piloted by humans)
>added C3PO-like robot to explain the plot + sexy-voiced AI computer
>rearranged the episodes and dropped some
>changed one of the character's voice to weird whistling beeps

Except the terrible 1990s CGI. Pic related. But we can ignore that, it's like 0.5% of the show.
