>>153090620Making it too pleasing costs more money. That's obviously the biggest reason adult-oriented cartoons are simple and cheap looking. But they also do it because it makes it less likely that some grandparent will flip through the app and accidentally put it on for their grandkids without realizing what it is. There's also the benefit that they avoid being accused of peddling pure erotica, no matter how graphic or crass the subject matter is. Big Mouth got by on being so crass, unpleasant and ugly that it was accepted as pure venting satire (That's - wink wink - totally not meant to make teenagers absorb the creators beliefs about sexual conduct and ethics as absolute truth.)

And even there, that shit got pulled after three episodes because it was too controversial. It's easier to get away with sexual themes and topics, and even some mild graphic content when your cartoon is ugly enough that a casual observer won't come to the conclusion that it exists solely for people to jerk off to.
