it's Pocahontas day, let's have a thread in her honor!
>>153097774The pocahontas movie was really fucked up considering she was a real life person.John Smith was a lying braggart in real life and when she ran into him after coming to England she refused to even look at him.
>>153097774I like it, it's not my favourite Disney film but it's pretty enjoyable, Just Around the Riverbend is a good song
>>153097802john smith never existed, it was made up
>>153097774More like "Fuckhercuntandass", amirite?
>>153098462don't be a disgusting coomer, that's an injun
>>153097774ELLO' DARLING
>>153097774Pocahontas is cute. Why does everyone including Disney hate her?
>>153099438The problems with the real life history of Pocahontas.
>>153099438most people think her movie is really boring, if you asked the average what the worst disney movie is, they would say pocahontas.
Color of the wind was peak!
>>153098462Pokeahotass
>>153097774
>>153100939I'd sure leave a trail of tears on those. Knowhatimsayin?
>>153099821>the one on the right: better version
>>153099821
>>153099660It goes way beyond Pocahontas. The Powhatan were much more adversarial in real life, most everyone in Jamestown was either sick or starving, and John Ratcliffe was noted as a competent and peaceable governor who was brutally murdered by the Powhatan.
>>153103323>John Ratcliffe was noted as a competent and peaceable governor who was brutally murdered by the PowhatanJohn Ratcliffe was decidedly NOT competent. He wasted time, resources, and the enrgy of his men searching for nonexistant gold and demanding a mansion be built for him rather than growing food.
>>153103642Huh the stuff I learn on /co/
>>153097774I'd like to poke her hontas.
Pocahontas is incredible. It's visually one of the best 2D animated films ever, possibly the peak of the renaissance. Everything is so dramatic and well-tuned, it really feels like craftsman trying to make something profoundly visual. The story is simple, but it's Romeo and Juliet, it's universal, it's easy to get and appreciate for the execution. In a world where Avatar is still the highest grossing film, it makes me somewhat sad how a film on this level isn't more respected. Hopefully one day I will wake up in a world that isn't still trapped in the prison of 2010s tumblr thought where the only conversation of this film is that it's not historically accurate.
I like Pocahontas and think she's the sexiest Disney Princess and second hottest overall character (after Megara), but she's crippled by the real lifeore. She gets almost no fan art because nobody wants to hear about the complaints about the problematic aspects of her. A damn shame too. Nice absolutely nailed her design.
>>153105982The animators have said that they purposely tried to make Pocahontas attractive. They were aiming for something that felt heavier than Beauty and the Beast.
Sacagawea film when?
>>153104984I do think removing If I Never Knew You kneecapped the film. What's worse is the definitive cut of the film is stuck on the 10th anniversary DVD and has never been re-released.
>>153099699Yeah but I wanted to motorboat them titties
>>153104674What is this?
>>153108627show name is the same as the filename
It really sucks that Lindsay Ellis poisoned the well.
>>153103323Wow, they really seem to want to erase that fact, even to this day... I was just looking at the Lorcana card for the chieftain today (that was just released in the recent Winterspell expansion), and they clearly intended to depict a character who was unable to attack, and only able to defend.
>>153109108people really like to gloss over the fact that the surviving well known tribes were pretty much all war tribes who became even worse when they got a hold of metal weapons/guns and horses from euro settlers
>>153109121I don't doubt it, but yeah, looking further, it seems like being non-combative is the theme they're pushing for most of Pocahontas' cards.
>>153109132this is an issue whenever you use real life people/groups because the actual events can be extremely different or outright opposite to what is depicted in shows/movies/etc
>>153109145No arguments here. You mentioned about how all the surviving tribes were war tribes, and that only makes sense to me. A non-combative tribe wouldn't last very long in those brutal times. I've always been a firm believer in the idea that we should let the truth of the past inform our future, especially where uncomfortable mistakes have been made.
>>153109108>>153109145 And you think those European settlers did nothing wrong and never antagonize them?
>>153109165Did we think that the WHITE INVADERS did nothing wrong? Of course we didn't. I'm Canadian, we do our best not to forget that we live on stolen land and unfairly subjugate the First Nations tribes even to this day.
>>153109165The issue is pretending like the natives were always completely innocent or these ultra peaceful groups who didn't have a history and culture of brutal warfare even before the "white man" ever showed up. Yes, we fuck them up and did horrible shit to them welcome to the fucking club of literally every culture in history and the world ever.
Yeah this planet was bought and settled with blood, and we still fight over every inch of it.
>>153097802wrong, he existed and was her boyfriend until hey drowned, she ended up marrying another white guy who took her to England both the Disney movie and the live action movie aren't accurate
>>153097802It really spits in the face of their native consultants, making the sequel was even more fucked up
>>153097966wrong, he existed and was her boyfriend until hey drowned, she ended up marrying another white guy who took her to England both the Disney movie and the live action movie aren't accurate
>>153109241weren't most of those native consultants con men who weren't even part of any tribe like that "native" guy who worked on star trek who turned out to actually just be an Italian guy
>>153109207 I think it's becoming more of an issue is pretending that's all they were was brutal history a brutal Warfare before white man showed up and somehow the white man was more their victim than the other way around.Included to this day and white washing recent events like Native American schools.
>>153104984Fr the artistry of this movie goes unappreciated, the animation of those character designs alone is mindblowing
>>153109250rewriting this real person’s story the way they did was an insult to her entire nation nonny, i love the movie too but you can’t rationalize that shit with production gossip
>>153109251Oh fuck off with CBC bullshit. God I hate being Canadian.
>>153109251>>153109273I think it’s becoming more of an issue to pretend that all they were was brutal history and warfare before the white man arrived, and to suggest that somehow the white man was more their victim than the other way around. This continues today with the whitewashing of recent events, like the history of Native American schools.
>>153109281Yeah lets pretend that the Comanche never ate people. Or made you eat your friends.
>>153109241I admit it's not very historically accurate but it dissent spit on anyone's face, it just changes the story to be a Bit more happy and fairy-tale like. But I suppose it would've been better had it been more historically accurate.
There's alot of self-hating natives that pretend to be Mezzo Indians because they don't want the Bering land bridge theory to be real. It just really stems from anti-Asian sentiment.
